My Notoriety Spreads Throughout the World-Chapter 508 - 440: Cervantes
Cervantes paused his hand holding the tall hat in mid-air, sweating as he looked at the weapon hovering in front of his neck and at the vigilant young girls, smiling helplessly to indicate he meant no harm.
"Perhaps we should put our weapons down first, I believe there must be some misunderstanding between us."
He and his companion had received orders from the Celestial Father to wait for the girls in this tall building. They wanted to play mysterious, but who knew the other party would be so cautious; the atmosphere froze the moment they met.
Seeing that the girls were still unwilling to put down their weapons, Cervantes sighed lightly: "I am Cervantes, a Disciplinary Officer from Skyline City. As you can see, I am a Bionic, and Bionics do not harbor malice towards humans, please be at ease."
As he spoke, Cervantes pointed towards his neck. Xu Xiaoyou narrowed her eyes, scrutinizing, noticing that the young man with white hair and red eyes had an identification code clearly marked on his neck, revealing his identity as a Bionic.
Only then did everyone let down their guard, beginning to scrutinize the frail young man standing before them. He was dressed in a black silk Disciplinary Officer robe, the ruffled collar meticulously pleated, a white shirt hidden beneath a dark red diagonal placket, with two strands of fabric trailing down the wide sleeves.
Cervantes wore a pure black silk tall hat adorned with a wide feather, his wine-red pupils also inscribed with an ID code.
He stood quietly in place, his presence as weak as a sculpture in a museum corner, in contrast to the red-haired youth beside him, tall and muscular, as though carved with a knife. His arms were sturdy enough to lift a thousand-pound object, and he wore bright red work pants and a sports vest, drawing attention wherever he went.
"Let me introduce, this is my creation, also my assistant, Sancho, he is also... hmm, a Disciplinary Officer."
"Disciplinary Officer, what a sissy name, I am the Disciplinary Inspection Commissioner of Skyline City. Any Bionic violating the ’New Gospel’ repeatedly without correction, I’ll blow their heads off." Sancho said, patting his chest.
Cervantes did not react, appearing used to his assistant’s rude nature: "Likewise, Sancho is also a ’Tag Hunter.’ I assume you are short on time, and going into detail would be overly lengthy."
"I think you need some help, come with me. Let’s leave here; I’ll help you escape the current trouble."
The young man held a book with a plain cover by Chen Pu in his hand, the text on the pages mostly obscure and hard to understand; this was Skyline City’s ’New Gospel.’
With a rejuvenated gaze, the New Gospel began to flip pages automatically, and the land air vehicle above them glowed silver-blue, beginning its descent, parking in front of the group, accompanied by the slow opening of the door, a burst of cold mist blew out.
That was liquid nitrogen. The active skin and internal circulation systems of Bionics could automatically adjust and adapt to extreme environments, even operating in conditions as low as minus 200 degrees Celsius. Therefore, their work environments often were filled with liquid nitrogen, significantly reducing maintenance costs for precision equipment over time.
The five of them exchanged looks and entered the land air vehicle.
The door closed slowly, the land air vehicle ascended again, leaving the pursuing enemies dumbfounded, helplessly watching them depart.
The temperature control system activated, warm yellow lights came on inside the vehicle. In the blink of an eye, the sealed vehicle walls transformed into an oil painting filled with color blocks, rapidly spreading from one point, making the entire cabin transparent and bright. The city’s skyline presented itself clearly before them, towering buildings flashing past on either side.
In the distance, a tremendously magnificent arc-shaped structure stood, occupying the city center, its top towering into the firmament like a resting giant beast.
"That’s the Ark." As if sensing what the girls were thinking, Cervantes said calmly, his eyes reflecting the structure.
The building named Ark was the dwelling place for humans in Skyline City, its internal structure infinitely close to a hive, the millions of cells inside enough to accommodate all of Skyline City’s inhabitants. Countless Mayfly Drones entered and exited the Ark daily, taking care of the residents’ living needs and cleaning waste.
Many of Skyline City’s humans had already lost the ability to move, requiring their care.
"You know what we’re thinking?" Xu Xiaoyou asked.
"Of course. We were created to serve humans. Our visual module has tens of thousands of sensing elements, capable of detecting subtle facial expressions to understand human thoughts." Cervantes replied respectfully.
Xu Xiaoyou became interested, tilting her chin to indicate in the direction of the red-haired girl.
Chichu Chun was resting her chin in her hands, staring blankly at the scenes passing by outside.
Cervantes chuckled softly, lowering his voice:
"She wants to eat something sweet."
Inside the land air vehicle, the space was quite spacious, allowing for free movement, equipped with a small bar. Chichu Chun glanced around, sensing something, but didn’t pay much attention.
Xu Xiaoyou then raised an eyebrow in Bai Youyou’s direction.
"This young lady wants to... handcuff you? Sorry, I can’t quite grasp her motives."
Angelina glanced over, and Cervantes nodded: "She’s slightly afraid of heights and a bit carsick."
"I’m not carsick, and definitely not afraid of heights." Angelina retorted coldly, arms crossed, but her impatient tapping with her boot betrayed her.
Fine, Angelina admitted she was feeling a bit uneasy. Her senses were much sharper than the others here, particularly sensitive to changes in sound, airflow, and orientation beyond her control.
She was just a bit uncomfortable.
As for Tang Xin, the girl smiled sweetly while looking over, making Cervantes’ face freeze as he looked to Xu Xiaoyou for help.
"She’s thinking that she’ll eliminate me if I dare to disclose her thoughts from a second ago."
"What about me?" Xu Xiaoyou calmly pointed to herself.
After carefully confirming, Cervantes lowered his gaze slightly: "My apologies."
So, he silently switched off the ’micro-expression recognition’ mode.
The land air vehicle flew steadily through the air, heading towards the preset destination of the navigation system.
...
Inside the Ark, a passageway on one of the floating platforms. A Bionic Disciplinary Officer was conducting a routine inspection as usual, preparing to complete the handover, when a lively, cheerful girl approached, waving in his direction.
"Hello, Miss Troy."
He did not know her; all Disciplinary Officers shared the Hera Cluster Network, and he identified her through the identification code in her eyes, learning her identity and name.
"Hello, Mr. Ain."
The girl bounced past him, and the man vaguely sensed something was off, stopping to look back at the departing girl’s figure.
Everything in the data seemed normal, all information indicated she was here to replace his position, yet he just couldn’t shake off the odd feeling. Most of the Disciplinary Officers serving in his area were at least familiar to him, if not known personally, and recently no new personnel had been assigned to the unit.
How could it be that he had never seen her?
Just as he reached out intending to stop her and question her, his entire body froze in place, his vision suddenly engulfed in blood-red. Dense streams of data flew rapidly across his terrified eyes, upon closer inspection, they were tiny spiders!
His vocal cords fell to the ground before he could utter a sound, all of his systems frantically crashing, skin, muscles, bones, every inch of body tissue dissolving amid the system’s piercing alert sounds.
The man collapsed to the ground with a sticky thud, soon melting into a puddle of blood, his eye atop the red liquid still darting till the last moment.
The image etched in his mind at the moment before consciousness faded.
The girl had enormously long legs and a pair of teasingly light red eyes.
