Chapter 24: Genie Jason

Jason had not planned to spend his morning being dragged to a shopping mall by a teenager brimming with endless enthusiasm. He had meant it when he suggested they should go shopping, but he certainly hadn’t meant immediately.

Yet there he was, standing on the curb while Regina waved her hand to stop a taxi.

"Come on, Jason, hurry up," she said, grinning as the taxi pulled over beside them.

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"You realize I haven’t had breakfast yet, right?"

"You can eat later. Shopping waits for no one."

"It’s not even ten yet and... Ugh, forget it."

Jason sighed but climbed into the back seat with her. The taxi driver, a woman wearing pink sunglasses, glanced at them through the mirror.

"Where to?"

"The Grand Plaza Mall, please," Regina said before Jason could even open his mouth.

Jason frowned.

"You still know your way around?"

Regina smirked.

"Obviii."

The driver nodded and pulled away from the curb. Regina spent the first few minutes scrolling through her phone and humming quietly to herself, while Jason stared out the window, mentally calculating how much this trip might cost him. Still, it was for a good cause. He had bigger plans anyway.

"Hey, Jason," she said suddenly. "Do you think six thousand dollars is enough for a proper shopping day?"

He turned to her slowly.

"Six thousand for what? A house down payment?"

She laughed.

"No, for clothes. Obviously."

He leaned back and muttered, "You’ve lost your mind. What makes you think I even have that kind of money?"

Jason sighed and leaned against a nearby display table. "That’s not how quality works."

Regina ignored him completely and continued digging through the racks like a professional treasure hunter. Within minutes, her arms were filled with clothes. She handed half of them to him without looking back.

"Hold these," she said.

He stared at the pile in disbelief. "You do realize I’m not your assistant, right?"

"You’re taller, so it’s easier for you."

"That’s not how logic works either."

Regina gave a short laugh and disappeared into the fitting room area, leaving Jason standing awkwardly with a mountain of pastel-colored clothes in his arms. A couple of women passing by gave him amused looks. He could already imagine what they were thinking — some poor boyfriend being dragged into fashion hell.

He groaned quietly and shifted the weight in his hands. "This is my life now."

After several minutes, Regina came out wearing a light-blue sundress that shimmered slightly under the store’s lights. She spun once in front of the mirror, looking genuinely pleased.

"Well?" she asked.

Jason looked at her, then at the price tag hanging off the fabric.

"It’s nice," he admitted. "But I’m sure that price could feed a family for a week."

Regina smirked.

"So you like it."

He rolled his eyes.

"You’re impossible."

She giggled and went back inside to try another one, leaving Jason to stand guard once again, clutching designer bags that weren’t even his.

Jason rubbed his forehead.

"Then get the one with the logo, since it clearly speaks to your soul."

Regina laughed softly and turned back to the mirror.

"Good choice, GenieJason."

"Keep calling me that and I’ll make your next wish disappear."

She stuck her tongue out at him, then stood up and told the attendant she would take both pairs. Jason didn’t even bother arguing this time. He simply handed over his card when the total came up, trying not to think about the slow death of his bank balance.

As they walked out of the boutique, Regina swung her bags happily while he followed behind, loaded like a pack mule.

"You know," he said dryly, "for someone who claims to be broke, you have very rich taste."

She looked over her shoulder and smiled.

"That’s because I have a rich uncle."

"Correction. You had a rich uncle. You now have a financially traumatized one."

Regina laughed and nudged him with her elbow.

"You’ll survive. You always do."

Jason gave a quiet sigh but couldn’t help the faint curve of a smile on his face as they continued through the mall together.

He rubbed his temple.

"Fine, get both."

She did exactly that.

When they left the shoe store, the total had risen by another thousand. Jason carried the new bags without complaint, though his expression grew increasingly blank, yet he kept going because of the main goal. Normally, one would wonder how this would help, but shouldn’t that be a question for later?

They stopped next at an accessory shop. Regina tried on sunglasses, bracelets, and necklaces, modeling each one in front of a mirror. She moved with the confidence of someone who had done this many times before. Jason stood behind her, his patience fading with every purchase.

After paying again, he finally said:

"You’re aware this is turning into a financial apocalypse, right?"

Regina smiled and adjusted her new necklace.

"You’re just not used to treating yourself. Think of it as therapy."

"I think of it as robbery."

They took a short break at the food court, sitting near the window. Regina ordered two milkshakes and a plate of fries. Jason ordered black coffee. She leaned across the table with a mischievous look.

"You’re not having fun?"

He stirred his coffee.

"Define fun."

"Spending money with joy."

"Then I’m miserable."

She laughed so hard that other people turned to look. When she caught her breath, she took a fry and pointed it at him.

"You used to be stingy and broke. What happened? Did you win the lottery?"

He raised an eyebrow.

"Do you want to end the shopping?"

Her eyes widened.

"No. I mean, I was just curious."

"That’s what I thought."

They finished eating and went on to the next store. Regina seemed unstoppable. Every shop they entered added more weight to Jason’s arms. His reflection in the mirrors looked increasingly pitiful, while Regina’s face glowed with satisfaction.

In one clothing boutique, she tried on a floral dress and stepped out of the changing room.

"What do you think?"

Jason looked up from the bench.

"You look nice."

"Just nice?"

"Expensively nice."

She smiled and twirled once.

"Sold."

By late afternoon, they had visited more than ten stores. Jason had stopped counting after the seventh receipt. The attendants seemed delighted every time they approached, some even greeting Regina by name after her repeated appearances.

At an electronics store, she insisted on checking out gadgets.

"I just want to browse," she said.

Jason followed, unconvinced. Ten minutes later, she was standing at the counter with a new tablet, earbuds, and a portable speaker.

"Browsing, huh?" he asked.

She grinned.

"Browsing successfully."

When the cashier read the total, Jason blinked.

"Five thousand nine hundred and ninety dollars?"

"Yes, sir," the woman replied pleasantly.

He nodded slowly.

"It should be illegal to sound that cheerful while saying that number."

Regina laughed so hard she could barely breathe as he paid. When they left, even the security guard held the door open for them, likely out of sympathy.

Outside, the sky had deepened to a warm amber hue. Regina stood proudly beside the mountain of shopping bags stacked near the taxi stand. She stretched her arms with visible satisfaction.

"Best day ever. Admit it, you enjoyed it."

He set the bags down for a moment and regarded her with weary amusement.

"I enjoyed discovering how it feels to lose over seven thousand dollars in a single day."

She smiled and tilted her head playfully.

"Then you’re welcome."

A taxi arrived, and Jason loaded the bags into the trunk with deliberate care. Regina slid into the back seat, humming softly while scrolling through her phone. Jason joined her, resting his head against the seat, fatigue washing over him.

As the taxi rolled away from the mall, Regina looked up from her screen and said,

"You know, GenieJason suits you. You granted every wish today."

He smirked faintly without opening his eyes.

"Genies usually vanish after granting wishes. Don’t be surprised if I disappear tomorrow."

She chuckled and reclined in her seat.

"If you disappear, I’ll find another one. Though I doubt anyone else would have your level of patience."

Jason opened one eye and gave her a sidelong look. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"Patience or stupidity, hard to tell which."

She only grinned. The rest of the ride was quiet, save for the rustle of shopping bags. Regina hummed contentedly, admiring her new treasures, while Jason stared out the window, contemplating whether he would ever financially recover from the day. Then he remembered he was a millionaire on his way to becoming a multimillionaire, and eventually, a billionaire.

’Maybe it was worth it,’ he thought with a quiet exhale.

When they reached home, he helped carry the bags inside. Regina immediately ran off to show Marinette her new collection, leaving Jason by the door with sore arms and a dazed expression.

He glanced at the mountain of shopping bags piled on the floor and muttered, "You’ve outdone me, but don’t tell anyone how much we spent today. Understood?"

From the living room, Regina called out cheerfully, "Sure! Worth every penny, GenieJason!"

Jason exhaled, removed his shoes, and decided that next time, he would pretend to be injured before agreeing to accompany her anywhere.

Catherine and Daisy entered the living room just then, both freezing at the sight of the countless shopping bags.

"Umm... did you buy an entire store? And by the way, Jason, you didn’t mention that you’d won the lottery," Catherine said, folding her arms and giving him a sharp look.

Daisy glanced between them, chuckled, and wandered off to inspect what Regina had made him buy.

Jason blinked twice.

"The lottery... Yeah, something like that."
