Chapter 88: D.C Kingmaker

The VIP terrace was a masterclass in exclusivity. While the main ballroom inside the Kennedy Center was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with hundreds of desperate social climbers, the terrace held no more than twenty people. They were the true architects of American policy—cabinet secretaries, four-star generals, and the billionaires who funded their campaigns.

But the center of gravity on the terrace was undeniably Senator Margaret Hale.

She stood near the stone balustrade overlooking the dark waters of the Potomac River. She was in her mid-fifties, but she possessed a timeless, terrifying elegance that made her age irrelevant. She wore a tailored, deep-emerald evening gown that was conservative enough for a politician but cut with a precision that highlighted a surprisingly athletic, commanding figure. Her silver hair was styled impeccably, framing a face that was sharp, aristocratic, and completely devoid of warmth.

She was currently holding court with the Secretary of Defense and a prominent tech lobbyist, but as I stepped onto the terrace with Evelyn Cross on my arm, her eyes locked onto me.

She excused herself from the conversation with a polite, dismissive nod and walked slowly toward us. She moved with the predatory grace of a woman who had spent 20 years navigating the most treacherous political waters on earth and had drowned every man who tried to pull her under. 𝙧𝙚𝙚𝔀𝒆𝓫𝓷𝙤𝓿𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝙤𝓶

"Director Cross," Senator Hale said, her voice a rich, smoky contralto that carried effortlessly over the ambient noise. She didn’t extend her hand. "I must admit, I’m surprised to see you here. I was under the impression you were currently buried under a mountain of Vanguard Holdings subpoenas in New York."

Evelyn stiffened beside me, her grip on my arm tightening. "The Vanguard investigation is... ongoing, Senator. But I occasionally find time to support the arts."

"I’m sure," Hale said, her tone implying she didn’t believe a word of it. Her sharp, calculating gaze shifted from Evelyn to me. She looked me up and down, analyzing my bespoke tuxedo, my posture, and the fact that the terrifying Director of Enforcement was clinging to my arm like a nervous debutante.

"And you must be the mysterious Julian Vance," Hale said, a small, dangerous smile playing on her lips. "Harrison briefed me on your sudden, rather loud arrival in Silicon Valley. Fifty million dollars dropped on a neural-mapping startup overnight. You certainly know how to make an entrance, Mr. Vance."

"I find that subtlety is often mistaken for weakness, Senator," I said, meeting her gaze without flinching. I let the [Emperor’s Presence] flare, pushing the invisible weight of my authority against her.

I watched her eyes carefully, waiting for the flinch, the subtle shift in posture that indicated submission.

It didn’t happen.

Senator Hale didn’t even blink. She absorbed the crushing weight of the aura as if it were nothing more than a stiff breeze.

System, I thought, a cold spike of adrenaline hitting my system. Observe.

My breath hitched slightly. Willpower 99.

She was stronger than Victoria. She was stronger than Evelyn. She was a woman who had built her entire life on dominating the most powerful, arrogant men in the world. My aura wasn’t going to crush her; it was just going to annoy her.

"Subtlety is only a weakness if you don’t know how to use it," Hale said, her smile widening slightly, recognizing the challenge in my posture. "In Washington, the loudest men are usually the first ones to get shot. The real power moves in the silence between the words."

"Then perhaps we should find a quiet place to talk," I suggested, stepping closer, invading her personal space just enough to test her boundaries.

Hale didn’t back away. She held her ground, her emerald eyes locking onto mine with a terrifying intensity.

"I don’t do business at charity galas, Mr. Vance," she said smoothly. "And I certainly don’t do business with men who use federal directors as arm candy to bypass my security."

She looked pointedly at Evelyn, who flushed a deep, humiliating red.

"If you want to play in my city," Hale continued, her voice dropping to a low, threatening whisper meant only for me, "you need to learn the rules. You don’t demand an audience with me. You earn it. And right now, you haven’t earned anything but my mild curiosity."

She turned away, dismissing me with the casual arrogance of a monarch swatting away a fly.

"Enjoy the champagne, Mr. Vance," she called over her shoulder as she walked back toward the Secretary of Defense. "Try not to make too much noise. We prefer our billionaires housebroken in D.C."

I stood there, watching her walk away. The sting of the dismissal was sharp, a sudden, violent reminder that I was no longer playing in the minor leagues.

"I told you," Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of fear and vindication. "She’s untouchable, Jake. You can’t break her."

"Everyone breaks, Evelyn," I said softly, my eyes locked on the Senator’s back. "You just have to find the right hammer."

I turned and walked back toward the entrance of the terrace. Harrison Croft was standing by the velvet rope, watching me with a cold, satisfied smirk. He had seen the interaction. He knew his boss had just put me in my place.

As I passed him, I didn’t look at him. I just pulled out my burner phone and sent a single, encrypted text message to Nia.

Phase Two. Find the poker game.

It was time for me to show Senator Hale that I was not a fly, and in order to do that I had to first take down her most loyal servant. And the most effective way to do that was to rush him at his own game.
