Chapter 106: The Streets Are Talking...

It was another blessed day of existence for the human race, especially for those living in Gaora City, the second-most developed city in the Arcanum Imperium.

The eternal empire’s banners hung neatly on dedicated poles planted along the roads, and posters were being pasted on bulletin boards scattered throughout the city.

A vibrant atmosphere filled the air as people of all kinds, including mundane citizens, wizards, and a lot of visitors, talked excitedly about the upcoming event.

The Arcana Primis Cup’s Main Tournament would be happening in a few days, and talented, well-known young wizards from all over the Imperium were gathering in the city.

And of course, the streets are talking...

"Hahahaha, I love the week before the Arcana Primis Cup! Wakes up my entire being and colors my gray routine, you know?"

"Indeed, brother! Although we won’t see these guys much for a few more years, it hits differently once they start making waves across the empire and their names start coming up more often after a long time of not hearing it, you know?"

"I know that feeling! Just like when Lucien Winter suddenly emerged as one of the Ice Magna Prospects, right?"

"That’s exactly what I’m talking about!"

Such conversations echoed throughout the city, some more casual, while others leaned toward the more competitive side of things:

"Who do you have winning?" asked a bespectacled young woman with long, wavy blonde hair as she adjusted her glasses.

"Hmm, there are two of the youngest Magna Prospects joining, right? I want either of them to win, and they have a fairly good chance, but I think the heir of the Dargon Wizardry Clan will take it. That young man, Felix Dargon, was trained by his clan for a year before being sent straight to fend for himself in the Imperial Wizard Guild. I believe the Magna Prospects will find it difficult to surpass his talent and real-world experience," a tall but rather scholarly young man with a short bob cut replied.

"I get your point, but you can’t count the Magna Prospects out. Also, if we’re just talking experience, wasn’t the former Thunder Magna’s disciple, Donner Rakurai, brutally sent to the military by his master a year after being trained?" the young woman countered.

"Right... now that I think about it..."

"Well, I think you’re sleeping on the Grand Magic Academy’s five-star students too much. They’re the most numerous from a single faction, and they’re all greatly talented. There were quite a few times they’ve won the Arcana Primis Cup, too..." chimed a plump young man with olive skin.

"Ah, yeah, there’s them, too... Honestly, I don’t know who will win, but that just makes it all the more exciting, no? Hahaha!" frёeweɓηovel_coɱ

The preliminaries had ended a few days ago, and the remaining 64 spots were now filled, mostly by students of the Grand Magic Academy, with only a few surprising self-taught and self-funded wizards managing to make the cut.

These were confident and relatively well-off individuals who chose not to tie themselves to any private or governmental organization for the time being.

They would also be granted a manabound artifact from the Arcane Repository, as required by Imperium law, but only after agreeing to a year of military service or achieving a wizard rank of D.

It was an uncommon path, but one that offered far greater freedom and personal fulfillment, which only a few were brave enough to pursue.

Naturally, people around the city were also talking about these dark horses who had emerged from the preliminaries.

"Then what about those from the preliminaries? Anyone you think could make an unexpectedly deep run? Or maybe even win?"

"Ah... I don’t think anyone from the preliminaries has a great chance of winning, but that four-star student from the academy, Korren Neidisch, turned out to be surprisingly strong for a mere four-star.

I don’t know how he managed to become that powerful in such a short time, but he probably has a solid sixty-percent chance of making it to the top 32.

That alone would be huge.

There are a few other names I can think of, but those guys would be lucky just to get past the first round of the main tournament, so I won’t bother naming them." the tall, scholarly man said.

"Haha, you sure know your stuff, Dex. Oh, speaking of the tournament, aren’t the brackets supposed to be out today?" praised the plump guy.

"Yeah, let’s go check it out!"

Soon, the group of friends arrived at the nearest bulletin board, their brows furrowing as they overheard reactions from others who had just looked at the list and were talking about someone unfamiliar among the seeded 64.

"Hal Fennec? Who the hell is that guy?"

"How could I possibly know that nobody? Even the organizers of the Arcana Primis Cup know nothing about this guy except that he’s from the Grand Magic Academy."

"I get that, but there should be an extra note saying he’s a five-star student or something like they do for the other five-star students, right? Why didn’t they at least clarify who he is? Is this a mistake or what?"

"Ask the organizers, brother, not me. If you keep throwing questions I can’t answer, I swear I’m gonna lose it and smack you on the back of the head."

The bespectacled blond, tall scholar, and plump guy trio were intrigued and quickly examined the brackets, their brows furrowing and expressions turning confused like the others before them.

Only after a few minutes of studying the potential exciting matchups did they manage to take their minds off the matter.

The empire was curious: who the hell was Hal Fennec?

Meanwhile, the young man in question sat in a donkey cart, dozing peacefully; none the wiser that he was one of the most mysterious competitors and carried a heavy burden to perform.

Yet here he was, sleeping calmly while waiting for the transport to arrive in Gaora City.

A slight bump in the road jolted the cart to one side, waking him up.

Hal yawned, rubbed his face, and turned toward the driver, a smile creeping across his face.

It was time to announce his existence to the empire and earn a massive amount of Chaos Points.
