Chapter 49: Levreeshka’s scheme

Levreeshka whistles cheerfully as she walks along a path in a small grove just outside New York.

Alexander follows her like an obedient little dog, afraid of its own master.

"Well, brat, aren’t you going to ask why I’m in such a good mood today?"

"W-Why are you in such a good mood today, Lady Dulcar?"

"I’m glad you asked. Tomorrow I’ll finally put my carefully prepared plan into action — I’m so excited, I can’t wait!"

Levreeshka hops happily like a little girl on her birthday.

For a brief moment, the sight softens the reverent terror Alexander feels for her.

He feared her from the moment he first saw her, but after seeing her in action against Frank and his men, he fears her even more.

That night, Alexander hid among the trees, watching them fight. But more than the fight itself, what struck him was Frank’s true identity — Oktavian Azuralis, the man his house has hunted for ten years without success.

"I-I’m glad you’re happy, Lady Dulcar..."

She suddenly turns and glares at him, annoyed.

"That’s all? Aren’t you even curious what it’s about? I doubt an idiot like you could figure it out on your own!"

"Y-Yes, I am curious, Lady Dulcar... but why do you want to tell me?"

"What’s the point of a brilliant plan if you can’t brag about it? On Elyndra, I have my soldiers to admire my genius and flatter me after every victory. But here, there’s no one but you. So open those fucking ears and listen carefully!"

Alexander barely nods, paralyzed by the fear she might kill him at any moment if he angers her.

"Let’s start from the beginning. Epidemics. Over the past few months on Earth, I’ve consulted dozens of historical books. Do you know what humans do when they sense a deadly epidemic is about to break out?"

"N-No, Lady Dulcar... what do they do?"

"They always begin with a containment phase. They go on with their lives as if nothing is happening, while trying to contain the outbreak without disrupting society. But when they realize it’s slipping out of control, that’s when the fun begins."

Levreeshka shows a sadistic grin that chills Alexander to the bone.

"Phase two: eradicate the virus by any means, even if it destroys society and the economy. Quarantine, or even killing the infected — or those suspected of being infected. Above all, total isolation of any area deemed irreparably contaminated. Creating an army of primordial vampires and attacking the city would’ve been easy and fast, but it would never have worked. And do you know why?"

Once again, Alexander shakes his head. By now, he understands that Levreeshka wants to show off by explaining everything in detail, so he lets her.

"I’m not surprised. Tell me, boy, do you know how epidemics begin?"

This time, however, he doesn’t want to say no again and look like an idiot.

"Well, uh... I guess patient zero gets sick and starts spreading the virus to others, who then infect more people, and so on."

"Exactly. A horde of primordial vampires attacking all at once is an invasion, and the Monster Slayers would’ve repelled it easily — that’s why it would have failed. But if they start appearing one by one, then more and more... well, anyone would think it’s a virus. Especially HESPARC — the key to my plan. Combine humanity’s natural response to epidemics with the Monster Slayers’ mission to keep otherworldly creatures secret, and the game is over. Soon I’ll release primordial vampires in numbers never seen before, inside and outside the city. And then it will be total chaos. Exploiting that chaos to get my hands on the Tear of Azkarith and kill Princess Mia will be child’s play."

"I see... but how will you deal with the Platinum Death? With all that chaos, she won’t leave Princess Mia for a moment."

"Fuck, listening to your stupid questions is killing my brain... and you were the one who told me that in the morning the Platinum Death works in a villa outside the city as a cleaning woman. Mia’s stepbrother told you that when you were pretending to be his friend. Or maybe it’s bullshit you made up to save your skin, so I’d think you had useful information? If it turns out to be bullshit, I swear I’ll make you suffer so much you’ll beg me to kill you!"

Alexander has never been so terrified in his life.

"Y-Yes, it’s the truth — I swear!"

"I hope so for your sake. I made substantial changes to the plan based on your information. I’ll unleash the chaos when she’s away from the princess. By the time the Platinum Death realizes what’s happening, it will be too late — the city will already be under isolation. And for extra safety, I have an army of more than five thousand primordial vampires ready to send against her as soon as she moves."

"F-Five... five thousand of those monsters?!" Alexander exclaims, shocked.

"Yes, unfortunately I couldn’t create more — I need the rest to unleash in the city. They’re nowhere near enough to take her down, but they’ll slow her just enough to give me time to kill the princess and recover the two divine artifacts."

"Speaking of the divine artifacts..." Alexander murmurs fearfully. "O-Our deal is still valid, right...?"

"Of course, brat. I’m a vampire of my word. Once I take the Scale of Urvoras, I’ll deliver you the corpse of the man your house has been hunting."

A faint, hopeful smile crosses Alexander’s face.

Deep down, he wants her plan to succeed almost more than she does.

When all this is over, he plans to return to N’Raeth as a hero, carrying the corpse of a dangerous fugitive.

The dishonor of disobeying Julius’s orders and abandoning Rudeor at the first sign of trouble kept him from returning to his family.

But now he has the perfect chance to erase his mistakes and, above all, the reputation of being weak and cowardly that follows him.

"T-Thank you, Lady Dulcar..."
