Chapter 74: Like Oil and Water

"Pfft, hahaha, quite the party leader you turned out to be," Rose said, shaking her head with a mocking smile.

Alice ignored Rose again, but this time her face made clear the comment had annoyed her.

Rose, noticing her words had landed, was about to continue but was cut off by Mark.

"Alice," Mark said quickly, cutting off whatever Rose was about to say next. "Do you think you can stand up?"

Alice, who until that moment had been holding herself back from responding to Rose, turned her head toward Mark.

The question seemed to pull her out of her mild irritation and her expression shifted to something more neutral.

"It should be possible," Alice replied after a moment. "My limbs feel more stable than before."

"Good... Rose, take Vorax off her," Mark ordered.

"As you wish, Master," Rose said, crouching down beside Alice.

Rose took Vorax in both hands and carefully lifted him from Alice’s chest.

The slime let himself be lifted without resistance, his gelatinous body trembling slightly between Rose’s hands as she set him down on the grass to one side.

"Now try to get up," Mark said.

With Vorax out of the way, Alice began to sit up slowly, it was clear it was still a little difficult for her.

But in the end Alice managed to sit up, then turned and bent her knees, getting to her feet.

Her legs trembled for an instant under her full weight but quickly stabilized.

She wasn’t at a hundred percent, that was obvious, but at least she could stand.

"I feel a little heavy..." Alice said as she moved her arms slowly, as if testing her own body’s range of motion. "It’s like my muscles are responding with a slight delay."

"That’s normal," Rose said, crossing her arms. "What Vorax transferred to you was basically raw, unprocessed energy, so your body used it as best it could to repair the damage... it’s not the same as a refined recovery spell that repairs tissue precisely, but it’s better than nothing."

Alice listened to Rose’s explanation in silence and nodded slightly, accepting the information without asking further questions.

"Don’t worry too much about that," Mark said, looking at Alice. "Once we get to my dungeon, Aria will take care of healing you completely. She’s our support and she’s pretty good at what she does."

"Aria?" Alice asked.

"One of my other subordinates."

Alice said nothing, but Mark noticed her expression relaxed slightly at hearing that, as if knowing there was a definitive solution to her condition took a weight off her shoulders.

Mark kept his eyes on Alice for a few seconds to confirm she was genuinely stable and wasn’t going to collapse at any moment.

When he was sure the nun could stay on her feet on her own, he lowered his gaze to Vorax.

The slime was on the grass, motionless, and unlike Alice who had improved noticeably, he was still in rough shape.

Mark walked over to Vorax and crouched in front of him.

"Vorax," Mark said in a softer tone. "You’ll be feeling better soon too, just hang on a little longer."

The slime trembled slightly at the sound of Mark’s voice.

"I trust that you’re right, Master," Vorax replied.

His voice still sounded heavier than usual, but there was something in the way he said it that told Mark the slime genuinely meant it.

It wasn’t an empty response or a formality. Vorax truly believed Mark would find a way to fix his situation.

’I won’t let you down, buddy,’ Mark thought as he stood up.

Mark stood for a moment, the morning sun was already higher in the sky and the air was slightly cool.

Then he realized something he had been ignoring since the day before.

He felt dirty.

Not just from the sweat of having slept on the grass all night, or from having had sex with Rose.

It was more the accumulation of everything that had happened the previous day.

The stress, the fight, the mana transfer, all of it had left his body in a state that could only be described as uncomfortable and grimy.

"I’m going to take a bath in the stream," Mark said, pointing with his thumb in the stream’s direction. "I feel pretty gross with all last night’s sweat on me, so I’ll see you two in a bit."

Rose looked at him and simply nodded. Alice didn’t say anything either, so Mark began walking toward the stream.

While both women watched their Master walk away and found themselves alone, it was Rose who broke the silence between them.

"Alice," Rose said, turning toward the nun. "You should go with the Master."

Hearing that, Alice frowned.

"Why?" she asked, looking at Rose with confusion.

"What do you mean why?... isn’t it obvious?" Rose said, somewhat irritated by Alice’s question.

The vampire slowly and deliberately lowered her gaze, running her eyes over Alice’s body from top to bottom.

And her look said everything.

Alice’s clothes were wrecked, what remained of her outfit was stained with dried blood, sweat, and dirt.

There were tears everywhere, dark marks that could be her own blood or someone else’s, and a layer of grime covering practically every visible inch of fabric.

Her skin wasn’t in much better shape, with traces of blood on her arms, neck, and face.

Alice followed Rose’s gaze and looked down at herself.

"Oh..." Alice murmured, surprised.

Then there was a moment of silence as Alice examined herself, as if it were the first time she was realizing what state she was in.

"...You’re right," the nun said quietly.

And without another word, Alice began walking in the direction of the stream to catch up with Mark, but before she got far, Rose spoke again, making her turn back toward the vampire.

"Here, take this," Rose said, snapping her fingers and extending one palm.

PLOP.

Suddenly a bar of what appeared to be soap materialized on her hand and landed in it, and Rose tossed it to Alice.

She caught the bar of soap in midair and looked at it for a moment.

"Thank you..." Alice said as she turned to go join Mark.
