Chapter 71: Killing Two Birds with One Stone

"It could work..."

Mark remembered what had happened in the Demon Lord’s dungeon.

Vorax had absorbed a large amount of mana from the demoness to the point where the slime’s body had become saturated with it, but if that mana could be used on Alice, he wouldn’t have to keep wearing himself out.

’If what I’m thinking works, I can solve two problems at once,’ Mark thought. ’Vorax gets rid of the mana that’s saturating him, and Alice gets the mana she needs to recover.’

It was a simple plan. Too simple, in fact, which normally meant something was going to go wrong.

But Mark didn’t have many other options.

’Alright, first things first,’ Mark thought, then reached inside his robe looking for Vorax.

Mark’s hand felt around the inside of the robe for a couple of seconds until his fingers found him.

Mark pulled him out carefully, and Rose, who had been watching in silence since he said "it could work" finally spoke.

"What are you doing, Master?" Rose asked with a confused expression.

"You’ll find out soon," Mark replied, turning his attention back to Vorax.

"Vorax," Mark said. "Are you feeling better?"

The slime trembled slightly in his hand, and for a couple of seconds there was no response.

Then, with what was clearly an enormous effort, Vorax spoke.

"Master..." Vorax’s voice was weak and halting, very different from his usual calm tone. "I still... can’t... get rid of... the demoness’s mana..."

The slime paused as if the simple act of speaking cost him too much.

"It’s... too concentrated..."

Mark nodded slowly, that was what he’d expected to hear.

That woman’s mana wasn’t normal mana, which meant Vorax simply couldn’t process or expel it on his own.

But that was exactly what Mark needed.

"Vorax," Mark said. "What if I gave you a vessel to transfer the mana that’s saturating you into? Would you feel better?"

Vorax trembled again in his hand, and the irregular glow of his body pulsed a couple of times before he responded.

"If... I could... expel the mana..." Vorax said with difficulty. "Maybe... I could feel better..."

’Good. That’s all I needed to hear.’

Rose, who had been listening to the exchange between Mark and Vorax in silence, opened her eyes slightly, and Mark could see the exact moment she understood what he was planning to do.

Her expression went from confusion to understanding, and from understanding to concern, in a matter of seconds.

"Master," Rose said, stepping forward. "I don’t think that will work..."

Mark turned to look at her and noticed a somewhat complicated expression on her face.

"We don’t know what might happen if Vorax transfers all that mana to Alice," Rose continued with a hint of uncertainty. "Her body is already severely damaged and weakened... if she received a massive amount of concentrated mana suddenly, the results are unpredictable."

Mark stayed quiet for a moment, thinking over Rose’s words. 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

Rose was the most knowledgeable about magic in the group, and if she said it was risky, it was because it genuinely was, and Mark wasn’t arrogant enough to ignore a warning like that.

But he wasn’t going to drop the idea just like that either.

"Vorax," Mark said, turning back to the slime. "Is it possible for you to release the mana in a controlled way?"

"It’s... possible..." Vorax replied with difficulty. "I can... regulate the amount... I release..."

Vorax paused again.

"It would take... quite a long time..."

"That’s not a problem," Mark replied immediately.

Time was exactly what they had.

They were in the middle of nowhere, with no immediate threats, and Alice needed to recover before they could move.

So Mark knelt beside Alice and carefully placed Vorax on the nun’s chest.

"Alright Vorax, I trust you can do it."

After Mark placed the slime on Alice, nothing happened.

Vorax remained still on the nun’s chest and Mark began to wonder if something had gone wrong.

But then Vorax began to glow intensely, almost like a giant lightbulb slowly switching on and off.

Mark and Rose could see the mana that had been stored inside the slime beginning to transfer into Alice’s body.

"Looks like it’s working..." Rose said without taking her eyes off Alice.

"I knew it," Mark said with a hint of pride at being proven right.

And then, right after saying that, Mark fell backward onto the ground. His back hit the grass and he lay there staring up at the night sky above him.

The relief he felt in that moment was so immense that his entire body relaxed all at once, and the tension he had been accumulating since they arrived at the clearing vanished in an instant.

"Are you alright, Master?" Rose asked, walking over and looking at him with mild concern.

"I think so," Mark replied with obvious weariness.

"Now that Alice’s problem is sorted," Rose said in a calmer tone, "the best thing would be for you to rest, Master."

Mark, still lying on the ground, shook his head slightly.

"No, I still have to keep an eye on the mana transfer to make sure it goes—"

"Master," Rose interrupted him. "I’ll take care of watching over Alice while you rest."

Mark looked at her and Rose held his gaze with an expression that made clear she wasn’t prepared to budge.

"...Alright," Mark said, letting out a sigh. "Then I’ll leave Alice in your hands."

"Good. But first I’ll take the chance to go take that bath in the stream," Rose said, glancing toward the direction of the water. "I’ll be back as soon as I can."

"Don’t take too long," Mark said as he settled on the grass and closed his eyes.

Rose began walking toward the stream, and Mark watched the vampire’s bare ass disappear into the darkness.

’Well... looks like there won’t be a round two with Rose tonight.’

...

...

...

Meanwhile, back in Mark’s dungeon, things without him were not exactly calm.

"I already told you, I’ll be first!" Ely shouted with her fists clenched.

"And why you?!" Aria replied at the same volume, crossing her arms and leaning forward defiantly.

"Because I’m the head wife!" Ely said, thumping her chest with one hand. "I was the Master’s first subordinate! The first! That gives me priority!"

"That has nothing to do with it!" Aria shot back without retreating an inch. "Just because you got there first doesn’t mean you have rights to everything! Besides, it’s obvious the Master prefers me!"

Ely opened her mouth with an expression of indignation so exaggerated it looked like someone had just told her the earth was flat.

"Prefers you?" Ely repeated in a tone mixing disbelief and offense. "YOU? The one who can’t go five minutes without crying or demanding attention?"

"I don’t cry every five minutes!" Aria protested, her eyes already slightly wet, which did absolutely nothing to help her argument.

"You’re doing it right now!"

The argument between the two had started roughly fifteen minutes ago and showed no sign of stopping.

The subject was simple.

When Mark came back from his trip, which of the two would be the first to sleep with him.

It was a matter neither was willing to concede and both considered of vital importance.

"AAAGH! YOU’RE INSUFFERABLE!" Aria screamed, launching herself at Ely.

Aria grabbed Ely by the hair and Ely did the same to Aria, sending them tumbling to the ground.

Both rolled across the dungeon floor pulling each other’s hair and screaming like two cats fighting over territory.

Several meters away, sitting in one of the corners of the main chamber, Cali watched them.

The succubus had her back against the wall and her legs crossed, observing the scene with an expression of second-hand embarrassment.

’Why fight over something like that?’

But Cali decided not to say that out loud, because the last time she’d made a comment during one of Ely and Aria’s fights, both of them had stopped fighting each other to yell at her instead.

So she stayed quiet.

Cali looked away from the fight and toward the dungeon entrance.

Mark had been gone for a while now, and even though he had taken Yuki with him, she couldn’t help worrying.

"I hope he comes back soon..."

But a loud crash pulled her out of her thoughts.

Cali turned her head and saw that Ely had managed to lift Aria off the ground and was carrying her over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes while Aria kicked and pounded her back with both fists.

"PUT ME DOWN! PUT ME DOWN RIGHT NOW!"

"Not until you admit I go first!"

"I’D RATHER BE DEAD FIRST!"

"YOU’RE ALREADY DEAD, YOU IDIOT!"

Cali looked at them for a couple more seconds, then let out a sigh.

’...I suppose it’s better if I go back to my room.’
