Chapter 704

Anton was thankful for the Pearl of the Ocean. Because of the said magic item, even when he was adventuring outside, he would still have hours to spend on making sure that his progress inside his Diablo System was ongoing. Three to four hours of sleep was equal to a full eight to twelve hours of sleep, so even if he spent the majority of the night up until the wee hours of the morning leveling up his Diablo Characters, by the next day, he would still have experience having a full night's sleep.

It was only around seven in the morning when Anton woke up. He ate a quick breakfast, stored everything he needed to store in his inventory, and cleaned himself using a cleaning spell.

Anton had decided that since he did not have an actual goal, he would go to the northern kingdom of Enundia through the forest instead of using the road. Since the kingdom was supposed to be exactly north, he could just follow a compass.

He wanted to know if he could find something interesting inside the forest. He decided to keep the two Spirit Wolves as his guards and lookouts, since he did not want to bother with small fry monsters.

Looking at his compass that was now pointing north, he continued his journey. Anton thought that if he encountered something that would mess up his compass, he would simply fly up to take note of where he was, and if worst came to worst and he truly had gotten lost, he would simply portal back into the manor and try again. That was the advantage of having no clear goals.

The forest was truly beautiful. The colors of autumn that were now slowly fading because of the coming winter brought a stillness and calm into Anton’s soul. He knew that if he were a normal person, he would have suffered because of the low temperature, but even though it was a little uncomfortable to him, because of his high physical stats, it was tolerable.

Most animals that they had encountered would have been dangerous to a regular person, but because of the two spirit wolves beside him, the animals did not approach him. Some small animals like squirrels and foxes stared at him from afar, but if they saw his intention of going near them, they would scramble away immediately.

Because he was deep inside the forest, Anton expected that he would not encounter any people, but after a few hours of walking, he stumbled into a house deep inside the forest. A young man in his early twenties was busy chopping wood, and a girl of around Anna’s age was busy doing chores.

The young man and the girl stopped what they were doing and confronted Anton. When they both saw the large Spirit Wolves beside him, the young man blew a whistle. A woman around Anders’s age came from inside the house, followed by a very young boy.

In the distance, Anton saw a large man the same age as the woman running to them. Anton assumed that the large man who was coming and the mature woman were the parents, and the three young people were their children.

Anton simply waited with the two spirit wolves beside him. When the large, bulky, mature man arrived, he was surprised that the man was not even breathing hard. Anton assumed that the mature man had some sort of warrior class.

“Who are you, and can we help you with something?” The man asked.

“My name is Anton, and I’m a novice mage. I’m headed to the kingdom of Enundia, but decided to cut through the forest. I hope to learn more about the world, and I thought that traveling through the forest would enlighten me a little, since I’m being guarded by two powerful spirit wolves summoned by my master,” Anton simply replied.

“Fine by us. Don’t let us hold you back,” The man said, clearly stating his intention that he was not welcome in their house.

Anton just shrugged. He knew that he would meet all sorts of people, and some would not welcome him. He continued his journey without looking back at the hunter family.

The forest was easy to navigate since the land between the trees was wide enough. He could not identify the trees in the forest, and some of the animals that he encountered were almost magical in nature.

There was a small herd of deer that, astonishingly, just stared at Anton and his two spirit wolves when he stumbled upon them. Anton had to admit that they were cute. After a couple of minutes staring at each other, he continued.

What Anton did not know was that the herd of deer was not afraid of him because he did not smell of blood, meaning he had not killed anyone or anything recently. If the deer had caught even a small whiff of blood, they would have run away immediately. The summons was also different. Even though the two Spirit Wolves had killed some of the ferocious animals and a goblin or two along the way, they did not retain any physical smell for long. Anton did not even bother picking the berries and fruits that he found, since he did not know what they were and was afraid that they were poisonous. Even when he stumbled onto crystal clear creeks, he just admired their beauty and did not touch the water. Not that he was afraid. It was just too cold.

Anton realized that trekking alone in the forest was a very good way to calm someone's mind, but he knew that it could not be done by anyone. Only those who could defend themselves could do so.

While walking, Anton realized that he was missing an accessory. The vaunted walking staff. So he selected a sturdy and long tree branch, and using a combination of spells, trimmed it down smoothly to become his walking staff. He decided that before sleeping that night, he would enchant his walking staff with magic.

When the sun had set, Anton simply looked for a wide enough space and retrieved his tiny house from his inventory. He warmed the inside with his Fire Wall stove, summoned a couple more Spirit Wolves as guard, then went inside to rest. He ate dinner first, then started his project for that night, which was enchanting his walking stick.

After a couple of hours, he successfully enchanted a globe of charged bolts. It was not intended as an attack spell but as a simple light spell. It was a little showy, which was his main objective, and since its purpose was to be used as a light and for showing off, the mana consumed was very little. As usual, with all of his enchantments, it could be turned on and off using a switch.

When he was done with enchanting his walking staff, Anton leveled up his Diablo character until the wee hours of the morning. When he felt tired, he slept with the Pearl of the Ocean beside him.

The next day, he continued his journey. He dismissed two of the spirit wolves and just kept two as his guards and lookouts. Soon, he noticed that the forest became thicker. He knew that he was now truly deep inside the forest. Of course, Anton was not worried. He was powerful enough, and ever since the start of his journey, the most dangerous animal that he encountered was a large brown bear. Even the goblins that were scattered along the way were easily dispatched by the spirit wolves.
