Chapter 82: A Sensual Gift

Violet

"Oh," I just whispered.

I wasn’t sure what else to even say.

We stood there, staring at each other across the space. Then she turned and headed back into the corridor.

"Follow me," she said over her shoulder. "I’ll show you to your room."

I hesitated for only a moment before my legs moved automatically. "Thank you," I managed quietly.

The corridor suddenly lit up with those same glowing stones. Paintings of landscapes mostly lined the walls on both sides.

"You know," Astrid said conversationally, not looking back at me, "even though you’re wearing my old clothes, it would be rather unbecoming to be dressed so casually within the Supreme Alpha’s residence here. Especially now, with dignitaries and special guests from other packs arriving today."

My steps faltered slightly as we came to a larger hallway lined with doors.

She stopped before a door, her hand on the handle, and finally looked at me properly. "I’ll need to dress you appropriately."

Her clothes?

I immediately looked at what I was wearing.

A horrifying realization crashed over me.

These clothes. The ones that had were in that room at the estate. The ones that fit me almost perfectly.

They had been Astrid’s?

I had been wearing his sister’s old clothes this entire time.

She must have seen the shock in my face because her lips turned up in a slightly amused smile.

"This is yours." She pushed the door open and I walked into what was apparently going to be my room.

It was large. Easily thrice the size of the room I stayed in before. My bag slipped slightly in my loosened grip.

The bed dominated a corner of the room. Sheer curtains hung from an ornate frame above it and cascaded down in soft folds that created an intimate space within the bed space.

There was a closed set of glass doors on the far wall framed by light thin drapes that revealed a beautiful balcony. And from here, I could even see the view outside. The sprawling grounds of the castle and the city stretching out in the distance.

There were two other doors in the room. One to my left, and the other to my right.

My chest tightened uncomfortably.

This was too much. The room was far too luxurious for me. Why give me this?

"Do you have a problem with your accommodation?"

I flinched, having almost forgotten Astrid was still there. I turned to find her watching me, that strange look appearing on her face again.

"Oh, no. No. It’s just... very nice..."

One of her brows tilted upwards. "Soak it all in while you can. You’ll be Supreme Luna eventually anyway."

The words hit me like a physical blow. My mouth went dry.

Me?

I wanted to protest, but the words wouldn’t come. Even if I wanted to pretend the mate bond wasn’t there. Everything, the save, his kisses, him sending me here to wait for his return.

Was she truly wrong?

"I will be right back." Her eyes raked over me before turning towards the door. "Wait and do not touch anything."

She left before I could respond, the door clicking shut behind her.

I stood there in the center of the room, clutching my bag, trying to process everything the luxury smacking me in the face.

The door opened again and Astrid returned, carrying a bundle of fabric in her arms. She moved to the bed, parted the curtains concealing it, and with surprising care, she laid the clothes out.

"Change into one of these once you’re done washing yourself." she said without looking at me. "They’re new clothes. Should be your size too."

Why was she doing this?

It almost felt like she was trying to be nice?

I might be wrong, but the difference between her now and then was disturbing.

Astrid moved to a vanity I hadn’t noticed before, a white polished stone structure with a mirror that reflected the room’s soft glow. She set down a small glass-covered bowl, the contents visible through the clear material.

It was a pale pink liquid.

I stared at it, confused.

Without a word, she headed towards the entrance again. I was about to ask her what she had just left behind when she paused, her back still turned to me as she spoke like she was talking about a random object.

"It’s a contraceptive. Drink it right before you’re about to do the deed. At the very least, I don’t want any relatives of mine born out of wedlock."

My face immediately flooded with heat as I understood the meaning behind her words.

The door closing behind her before I could form any kind of response.

I stood frozen, my mind reeling, and my stomach clenching.

’No. No. No.’

Why would she even...

I needed to splash my face with water. Cold water. Immediately.

I dropped my bag on the floor right there and then and rushed towards the nearest door, pushing it open without thinking.

Darkness greeted me.

Or not complete darkness, but a dim space lit only by the light slowly filtering in from my room. My eyes adjusted slowly, making out shapes in the dim space.

It was another bedroom.

Larger than mine. Darker. The furniture was large, all dark and deep colours compared to the stark brightness of mine. The bed sat against the far wall, its presence somehow commanding even in the shadows.

And it was accessible. Directly accessible. From my room.

The realization made me go still.

This was Kael’s room.

Connected to mine by a single door.

My heart started pounding for entirely different reasons now. I backed up a step, then another, unable to tear my eyes away from that massive bed shrouded in darkness.

Images flickered through my mind. The cave. His body pressed against mine. His hands on my skin. His mouth—

I slapped the door shut and spun away from it, my pulse racing as I practically fled to the other door.

What would happen when he returned? Would he come through that door? Would he expect...?

The contraceptive on the vanity suddenly made far too much sense.
