Chapter 259: The Dilemma of Two Mates

Violet

"I... I really don’t think there is anything you could have done that would make me hate you," Bei said simply.

She sounded so sure of herself.

"Have you ever... have you ever heard of a wolf having two mates?"

I lowered my gaze, unable to fully look at her. I wasn’t sure what sort of expression she would have and I didn’t necessarily want to see it.

"Two mates," she repeated slowly.

I nodded, still not looking up.

"I don’t think I have ever heard of anything like that to be honest." Bei’s voice was quiet now, measured. "Are you telling me that you..."

She didn’t finish the sentence.

I finally lifted my gaze to meet hers.

She looked very surprised.

"Yes," I said softly.

"I... see." She shifted her gaze to the wall then back at me. "Silverwood’s Supreme Alpha?"

"Yes... how did you—"

"I had a slight hunch..." She sat straight, leaning away from the pillows. "You confirmed it a bit mere minutes ago... with how you called him by name."

I went still. I hadn’t noticed that slip up.

When had that even happened?

"In addition—the way... the way he had just taken you from us," Bei continued. "It never sat right with me. No matter how odd it might have been, it was reckless... but I didn’t want to just assume..."

"Yes... Rowan is my mate." The words felt strange leaving my mouth. Heavy and real in a way they hadn’t been before. "But so is Kael. I’m mated to both of them. I don’t know how and I don’t even know why. But it’s true."

I watched Bei’s face, waiting for the disgust, anger, or betrayal, but it didn’t come.

Instead, Bei let out a long, slow breath.

"Well," she said finally. "That certainly clarifies a few things."

I didn’t know what to say to that.

"You having two mates would likely have something to do with you being a Lycan." She trailed off, a bit sad. "I won’t lie, I am a bit disappointed. Please, don’t get me wrong. Not at you at all. But for my own... ruler..." She turned her full attention to me. "Does Lord Kael know?"

I nodded.

Her eyes widened. "Let me guess, during the conference?"

"Yes... he was not happy."

"I doubt he would be any happier now if he knew what this ruler did," she whispered.

I frowned lightly. "It’s something I am actually worried about." I paused. "You are not angry?"

She then stood up and to my surprise, came to sit on the chair beside mine.

She sighed, cradling her chin against her hand and staring at the window. "With the way you’re asking that question, you also care about Lord Rowan, don’t you?"

I couldn’t answer.

The silence stretched between us, but Bei didn’t push.

"I don’t know," I finally whispered. "No... I do. But I also miss Kael." I shook my head, pressing the heel of my palm against my forehead. "And I feel so guilty about all of it."

Bei’s face softened.

"You shouldn’t," she said quietly. "Feel guilty, I mean."

"How can I not?" My voice cracked.

Bei was quiet for a moment. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝙚𝔀𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝓵.𝙘𝒐𝒎

"I won’t pretend to understand what you’re going through," she said slowly. "I’ve never heard of anyone having two mates. But if it happened to you, there must be a reason for it." She paused. "The goddess doesn’t make mistakes."

Bei shifted, angling her body to face me more fully.

"I won’t pry," she continued, her voice careful. "I don’t need to know what happened between you and Lord... Rowan while you were together. That’s your business." She hesitated, something flickering in her eyes. "But I can see that you care about him. It’s written all over your face, even when you try to hide it."

My chest tightened.

"And Lord Kael..." Bei’s voice grew softer. "I don’t know his romantic side. I’ve only ever seen him as our ruler. But everything he’s done for you... including letting you leave even when it clearly hurt him... He cares about you deeply. That much is obvious."

The guilt twisted sharper in my stomach.

"I know," I whispered.

That was what made this so hard.

Bei sighed, and when she spoke again, her voice was gentle but firm.

"The advice I’m about to give you might not be what you want to hear." She paused. "It would also not be something I would be comfortable with if I am being honest. But I can’t tell you what to feel. I can’t police your heart. And I understand how powerful the mate bond is."

She reached out and placed her hand over mine.

I stiffened at the contact, surprised.

Bei smiled. It was a sad, gentle smile that made something in my chest ache.

"Follow your heart," she said quietly. "Wherever it leads. Don’t beat yourself up over something you can’t fully control."

"Oh..."

"And Violet?" Bei squeezed my hand lightly. "Whichever decision you make in the near future... it would be difficult, but either of them would understand."

I stared at her, my throat too tight to speak.

But hearing someone finally acknowledge the impossible position I was in without judgment or anger, loosened something that had been wound tight in my chest for weeks.

"Thank you," I managed, my voice barely above a whisper.

Bei just smiled and squeezed my hand again.

"I am glad to help." Her lips spread out in a wry smile. "Then again it is quite sly how he went behind my Lord’s back to take you from us."

I found myself wandering the courtyard as evening settled over the capital. Bei’s words turned in my head, and I felt a lot better.

A part of me stayed outside to meet Rowan just as he was coming in. Telsid had mentioned he would return this evening.

I had found Telsid just an hour earlier and he had looked surprised when I approached him just to talk. I had felt a pang of guilt then, realizing how little effort I had made to know Rowan’s beta.

I got to learn he was Rowan’s second cousin, which explained how casual he was towards Rowan.

The sky had darkened fully when I felt the bond reaching out and tugging gently towards him.

Rowan was close.
