Chapter 174: Sharing A Room II

Violet

A small entry room welcomed us.

There were two strangely shaped cushioned chairs positioned near the wall on my left, along with two curved chairs facing each other in semi circles. There was a small table in between them with flowers arranged on it.

There was a closed door on the other wall to my right.

But I wasn’t sure if I could call the wall facing us an actual wall.

Was it even a window either?

A glass pane stretched from the floor to the ceiling, and from one side to the other, concealed by a thin, see-through curtain that let in the sunlight. Through it, I could see the plants in what looked like a garden.

Rowan sighed and moved toward one of the chairs, dropping his bag beside it before sitting down heavily.

"I will sleep here. You can take the bedchamber." He glanced at the other door. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞

I turned to stare at him and my confusion deepened.

The room wasn’t a room?

"When he said a room, I thought it would be... an actual room," I said slowly.

Rowan laughed and shook his head.

"Not necessarily." A faint smile tugged at his lips. "Inns like this usually have separate spaces. A sitting area and a sleeping chamber. It’s more comfortable for longer stays... which they like."

"Oh..." I whispered, still standing there as I stared at the see-through wall in front of me.

And I tried very hard not to think about how close we were going to be tonight.

The bedroom was just as mesmerising as the entry room, except this time, there were two normal looking windows covered with the same light curtains.

The entire floor was covered in thick, plush carpet that felt so soft my feet nearly sank into them the moment I stepped out of my shoes. The walls were the same rich green highlighted at the edges with golden colour and I noticed the lanterns hanging from the roof.

There was a door which likely led to the bathing room, but the bed itself dominated the space. It was large and had a lot of pillows on it.

I set my bag down and sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress gave slightly under my weight, soft in a way I wasn’t used to.

I laid down, thinking of resting for a moment.

But when my back sunk into the soft bed, my body felt so tired and I was asleep before I could stop myself.

When I woke, the room was very dark.

I sat up, a bit sluggish and turned toward the windows, where I could faintly see the night sky behind the curtains.

I hadn’t expected to fall asleep like that... but I felt a lot better and more relaxed. Then again, I hadn’t properly slept while on that ship.

It was loud outside, so I strained my ears a bit to listen for any sound from the entry room. He was there, but he wasn’t moving.

Maybe he was still asleep?

Cheers from outside caught my attention, along with distant music and the sounds of celebration in full swing.

I quickly slid off the bed and ran to one of the windows, pushing aside the curtains to be met with the same garden I had seen through the entry room wall window. But it was lit up with nearby lights and I could see a few wolves walking past.

I leaned closer when the sky suddenly exploded.

A burst of brilliant coloured lights tore through the darkness, followed by a crack so loud it started me. I felt the sound in my chest and my heart nearly jumped out of my mouth, along with a small shout.

I jolted back only for my legs to slip on the carpet. I landed hard on my back and for a moment I just sat there on the floor, my pulse raising as I stared at the window.

What was that?!

Another explosion painted the sky outside and I flinched.

The door flew open and Rowan was standing there, alert. "What happened? I heard you—"

"I—I am fine—"

Another flash lit the window, followed by a cascading boom that made me flinch again.

Thunder never scared me, but this was far louder.

"What is that?" I whispered.

Rowan crossed the room quickly and was immediately beside me, crouching down to my level.

His hands hovered near me.

"Are you alright?"

I nodded, unable to meet his eyes.

I felt embarrassed.

There was another bang, but it didn’t affect me much this time.

"I’m sorry, it was just so loud and bright," I whispered.

"Fireworks," he said gently, leaning back to let out a relieved sigh. He glanced up at the window. "They’re just fireworks. It’s part of the festival. Sorry about the noise. They can be startling if you are not expecting them."

I stared at the window for a few more seconds. Another one didn’t seem to go off again and I wondered how anyone could find something so disruptive enjoyable.

I stood up, a bit relieved and glanced at Rowan. His hair looked a little damp and he had changed his clothes.

"I used the bath while you were asleep," he explained, pointing at the door in the room.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to feel about that. What if I had been awake and—

I shook my head, getting rid of the incoming unnecessary thoughts.

"If you want..." he said carefully as he stepped away from me. "We could go out to enjoy the festivities. I wouldn’t mind leaving you alone to enjoy it on your own."

A part of me wanted to stay here, away from the noise, but another part wanted to see what was out there.

And to have a night to myself like that?

"I don’t mind going out."

He smiled faintly and opened the door. "I will be waiting over here."

With that, he left, leaving me alone in the room.

The bath was quick. After washing myself, I changed into comfortable clothing and stepped back into the entry room.

Rowan was waiting by the window. He turned when he heard me, and something flickered in his eyes before he looked away.

He had a sad look on his face.
