Chapter 76: 076 Maintain Distance
Chen Xu looked at Yang Jinxia on the bed in surprise, seeing that her eyes were still tightly shut, only her lips were moving as if the words she just uttered were said unconsciously.
Was she answering my question?
He felt a rush of joy in his heart, which meant that part of her consciousness had recovered.
“Hey.”
He reached out and gently patted her face, “Hey.”
“Hmm?”
Yang Jinxia’s long eyelashes fluttered a few times and somewhat irritably brushed his hand away before she slowly opened her eyes, looking somewhat bewildered at Chen Xu sitting in front of her.
Seeing her awake, Chen Xu finally breathed a sigh of relief and turned to 2003, “Bring a cup of hot water here.”
“Now that Ms. Xia is awake, I will leave you two alone,” S01 timely bid farewell.
Chen Xu got up and said, “I’ll see you out.”
Having stepped out the door and walked a few paces, Chen Xu said, “Thanks for notifying me in time this time. Otherwise…”
“Saving humans is our sacred duty,” S01 said.
Chen Xu nodded and said, “I have a matter to discuss with you. I want to stay and would like to ask for your approval.”
S01 replied, “Of course, the initial purpose of setting up the shelter was to provide a safe haven for the surviving humans. Welcome, sir.”
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome. I will upgrade your access from visitor to resident. You may choose a room to live in here.”
“Much obliged.”
Chen Xu returned to the room and saw Yang Jinxia had already sat up, holding a cup of water and sipping it bit by bit. There was finally a hint of color on her originally pale face.
When she saw him come in, she stopped drinking water and gazed at the steam rising from the cup, seemingly lost in thought.
There was an awkward silence in the room.
Chen Xu walked over, there were no chairs inside, so he had to stand. He felt an itch on his cheek and scratched it before asking, “Hungry?”
Yang Jinxia shook her head gently.
“Then, rest well. I will have 2003 stay with you here. I will be outside,” he instructed before heading out the door, adding, “Don’t overthink things.”
He didn’t ask anything; everyone has a past they don’t wish to expose, let alone things that could bring one’s life into crisis.
He went to the room across from his, tried placing his hand on the door’s security sensor, and heard a beep as the door automatically opened. He couldn’t help but praise inwardly, “S01 is fast with the actions.”
The room wasn’t very big, about the same size as Yang Jinxia’s, likely a single room. The facilities were complete, with a bathroom, washroom, and everything needed, except for a chair.
He couldn’t help but marvel, “To not even afford to place a single chair, what kind of life did the people of this shelter lead in the past?”
It was still the middle of the night, and after a few hours of exertion, he too felt tired. He laid down on the bed fully clothed and didn’t bother closing the door before falling asleep.

…
When Chen Xu woke up, it was almost nine o’clock. He looked outside the door and saw that the door to Yang Jinxia’s room was closed. Since she hadn’t called for him, there probably wasn’t anything wrong.
He got up, washed, walked out, and ran into 2003, “Chen Xu, time for breakfast.”
He asked, “Where is she?”
2003 walked up beside him and said, “She’s over at the dining hall.”
“Is she feeling better?”
“Much more spirited than yesterday.”
The dining hall wasn’t far away, quite large, with dozens of tables set up in the style of a communal canteen.
Yang Jinxia was sitting at a table in the center; compared to last night, her complexion was much improved, although her lips were still a bit pale.
Chen Xu sat down opposite her; the table was empty, the food had not yet arrived.
“Just a moment,” 2003 went straight into the kitchen.
The dining hall kept to the same style as the rest of the shelter, and only the table they were sitting at had the light on overhead. The soft lighting gave her a fragile beauty that was strikingly different from before.
She spoke softly, “Thank you.”
Chen Xu said reflectively, “After all, we come from the same place. Even if there are conflicts, I don’t want to see you in trouble. I’ll help out if I can.”
“It was my fault before.”
Yang Jinxia took his hand, “From now on, whatever it is, I won’t act recklessly, I will always seek your opinion. I’m sorry for making you unhappy.”
Listening to her softly apologize, Chen Xu’s expression became somewhat distant.
“What’s wrong?” She saw that he didn’t respond and asked with concern.
“Nothing.”
Chen Xu came back to his senses, “Just remembered some things.”
He had been through two relationships, and no matter the cause of the dispute, none had ever admitted fault to him. At one point, he deeply detested the idea that “the girlfriend is always right.”
In fact, in his dreams, whether facing Luo Xiyun or Yang Jinxia, he unconsciously took out the frustration he had experienced from his past girlfriends on them.
After all, it happened in a dream. When facing them, what he showed was the most genuine thoughts from the depths of his heart. There was no need to hide or cover them up.
Yang Jinxia looked at him and asked, “Why don’t you ask me?”
“Ask what?”
“Don’t you want to know why I became like that?”
At that moment, 2003 brought over breakfast, interrupting their conversation. It served seafood noodles, set the bowl down, and then stepped aside.
“Eat while it’s hot.” Chen Xu picked up his chopsticks and began to eat, saying, “I’ve always felt that if someone’s heart were to be opened up, the deepest part is probably dark.”
“And if you looked closer with a magnifying glass, it would look even uglier.”
“But if you don’t cut too deep, just a bit shallower, you can actually see some beautiful things.”
“It’s like when lovers just begin to feel affection for each other, the impression they have is the most beautiful. At the beginning when they come together, it’s very sweet too. But the longer they’re together, the more dissatisfaction arises, and sometimes they might even find the other’s face loathsome.”
“Then, either they can’t stand it and break up, or they accept the unsatisfactory parts of each other and stay together. But the initial beauty can only be found in memories.”
Having said this, Chen Xu stopped eating, “It’s the same when dealing with anyone. If you don’t want to destroy the beautiful image of the other person in your mind, don’t get too close. And certainly, don’t try to dig into the depths of their heart.”
“Maintaining a proper distance is very important.”
Yang Jinxia watched him intently, her eyes flickering with an unusual light, and said softly, “Living like that must be painful for you, right?”
“Hah,” Chen Xu couldn’t help but laugh, “It’s not that dramatic. There’s still a lot of fun to be found in life.”
