Chapter 73: 073 Call Request

“You’re the fool.”

Chen Xu tapped on 2003’s head and asked, “Is it not ready yet? I’m starving.”

“It’s not like I said it,” its voice sounded a bit aggrieved, “It will take another twenty minutes.”

“I’ll go brush my teeth first, call me when it’s ready.” Chen Xu stood up and walked towards the vehicle.

Twenty minutes later, Chen Xu enjoyed a delicious breakfast, a magical dish called Beggar’s Chicken, which he had long heard about. He remembered reading the Legend of the Condor Heroes in middle school for the first time, being curious about the descriptions in it. He had never had the chance to try it until then.

It was his first time eating it, and the skin was crispy yet tender, the taste was smooth yet not greasy at all; truly commendable. He couldn’t help praising 2003 again.

This skill was really exceptional. He was not typically picky about the taste of food, but now he felt that eating such delicious food every day was truly a treat.

If only he could take 2003 back to reality.

Such a thought crossed his mind. Opening a restaurant with it as the chef, business wouldn’t be a concern.

After breakfast, they continued on their journey.

……

The further they got from A020 shelter, the more desolate Chen Xu felt. Looking around, it was as if they had entered a vast Gobi Desert.

The gusting sand made the originally blurry sky even hazier.

The road became increasingly soft; one careless moment and the vehicle wheels would press down into a pit, get stuck, and then slide, unable to move.

At such times, Chen Xu had no choice but to get out and use a mechanical arm to pull the vehicle out, which was quite troublesome.

Although he tried to stick to the old highways, the wear and tear from wind and rain had left them indistinguishable from the surrounding terrain. A slight misjudgment, and they would drive off the solid ground.

By noon, they had only covered two-thirds of the planned route.

Hiss…

Chen Xu felt the vehicle jerk, sinking downward. Somewhat annoyed, he slapped the steering wheel and said, “Forget it, go make food. I’ll get the car out.”

As he put on the exoskeleton arm and was about to get out, he heard 2003 warn, “It seems like there are strange beasts, a lot of them.”

Chen Xu instantly grabbed the rifle hanging on the car wall, held it in hand, and asked alertly, “Which direction?”

“Over there.”

He followed the direction 2003 indicated, and vaguely saw a group of strange beasts on the opposite hillside, swallowing nervously.

Due to the distance, it was not very clear, but there were at least a hundred of them.

He immediately felt fearful; with hundreds of strange beasts charging at him, even with accurate shooting, he wouldn’t be able to kill them all. If they got too close, he would be doomed.

“Let’s not worry about cooking for now; hurry and get the car out.”

He didn’t dare delay, dropped the gun, jumped out of the vehicle, and using the mechanical arm, pushed the car back onto the roadbed, then hopped back into the vehicle and shouted, “Hurry, let’s get out of here.”

As the vehicle distanced from the hillside, Chen Xu breathed a sigh of relief, wiped the sweat from his forehead, and said, “I didn’t expect to find herds of strange beasts here; it’s really dangerous. By the way, what are they doing there?”

While driving, 2003 responded, “It looks like they’re killing each other.”

Chen Xu was curious, “Killing each other?”

He hadn’t looked carefully earlier; he was just focused on escaping.

“More precisely, it’s a clash between two different groups.”

Chen Xu then understood and exclaimed, “It seems the worsening environment is also leading these strange beasts towards extinction.”

……

After this alarming yet safe encounter, they never encountered strange beasts again.

Chen Xu, observing the surroundings turning almost into a desert, suspected that the strange beasts from this area had either migrated or died out.

This harsh environment made him consider retreating. However, thinking that they were almost there, he gritted his teeth and continued forward.

Shelter C332 was a C-level shelter, larger than G5232. This was evident from the height of its walls.

Chen Xu drove up right to the gate, honked a few times, waited for a while, but there was no response, inducing a sigh from him.

He got out of the vehicle and walked to the gate, where he saw what appeared to be inscriptions, but they were obscured by dust.

After wiping off the dust, the writing underneath became visible.

“This is Shelter C332. All personnel have left with the rescue team. If any survivors arrive, you may use all the facilities inside. We’ve stored some compressed food but regretfully couldn’t leave any batteries. Instructions for opening the gate are below this message, dig under the sand here and you’ll see a switch. Wishing you all the best.”

The date indicated that the people from this shelter had left over twenty years ago.

Chen Xu let out a light sigh upon reading this. The outcome wasn’t much of a surprise.

The nearby environment was far harsher than that around the previous two shelters; no wonder no one had stayed.

“Chen Xu, should we go inside?” 2003, having alighted from the vehicle as well, saw the inscription too and asked.

Chen Xu shook his head and replied, “Let’s go somewhere else.”

The area was almost turning into a desert, a total wasteland; even securing water here could be lethal. The transport vehicle had enough food but couldn’t carry much drinking water. Staying here was unrealistic.

As for the food inside, he didn’t bother with it and got back into the vehicle.

2003 asked, “Where to next?”

“We’ll head back, there’s another B-level shelter in the opposite direction from G5232; let’s check that out,” he replied. His initial decision to come here was because it was the closest to A020.

Now he understood that the higher the level of the shelter, the more resources it had, the stronger it was, and the more likely it was to have survived.

This time, not taking the same route to avoid running into that large group of strange beasts, they took a big detour, taking nearly two days to return to G5232, the first shelter they had visited.

They arrived there at night. Chen Xu simply drove the vehicle into the shelter to spend the night, which was safer.

After dinner, Chen Xu sat down and started reading the material inside.

Suddenly, a line of text popped up in front of him, showing a communication request.

He was startled for a moment before realizing someone was trying to contact him through this terminal.

Who could it be?

Filled with curiosity, he accepted the communication request.

“Sir, I apologize for disturbing you at this time,” a video appeared before him; it was S01.

That made sense; besides it, who else could it be? After all, the terminal was given to him by S01.

He chastised himself for his slow reaction and politely asked, “May I help you with something?”

S01’s tone was still mechanical, uninflected, “Your companion has fallen ill; I believe you should come and see her.”
