Chapter 67: 067 Disband

The mechanical repair room was bright, with the screen in front of unit 2003 glowing, the source of the light.

In the middle stood the transformed transport vehicle, its appearance altered beyond recognition. Yang Jinxia stood nearby, controlling a crane to load various things onto the vehicle.

“Xia Jinse!”

A shout erupted from the entrance.

Yang Jinxia turned her head and saw an imposing Chen Xu. Her face showed no fear, and she even smiled. “You’re awake, I was just about to send 2003 to call you. Perfect timing—the stuff will soon be on board, and we can leave momentarily.”

Step by step, Chen Xu approached her, the sound of his exoskeleton-supported footsteps clinking on the ground. In the quiet, the noise was oppressively harsh.

...

Yang Jinxia seemed oblivious to the tense atmosphere, her face still wearing a soft smile, her eyes unchanged as she spoke gently, “I know you’re probably very angry, you can hit me or curse at me, vent however you want. I just want you to understand, everything I’ve done is for our future. Even if not for ourselves, think of our children…”

He stopped a step away from her, staring into her eyes, cutting her off, “Do you really think you’ve got me all figured out? You believe you understand my personality, thinking that by creating a fait accompli, I will be forced to compromise. Right?”

Chen Xu felt a fire burning in his chest yet spoke very calmly, “There’s one thing you did get right, I definitely won’t harm you. For survival, for self-interest, any means are permissible. But, one must have a bottom line, that is the dignity of being human. If even that last shred of dignity is lost, then one is unworthy of being called human.”

“But, you’ve got one thing wrong. You think by manufacturing a fait accompli and then giving me a taste of something sweet, that I will compromise?”

He scoffed, “Xia Jinse, you’re far too arrogant.”

“On what basis do you act without my consent, taking action before discussing it? And why should I, maintain the overall situation, compromise for you? Is it because you have a higher status?”

As Yang Jinxia listened, tears began to shimmer in her eyes. She lowered her head, her voice choked, “I’m sorry…”

“Save that act for someone else.”

Chen Xu’s voice remained unshaken, cold and firm, “I underestimated you. As of now, our team is officially disbanded. Once we reach the next sanctuary, we’ll split up. Afterward, you go your way, and I’ll go mine.”

Having said that, he ignored her and headed for the transport vehicle’s cabin.

“Sir…” 2003 spoke up.

“Shut up.” Chen Xu glared at it, pulled open the door, and stepped in.

Yang Jinxia raised her head, a hint of worry between her brows, wiped away the tears from the corner of her eyes, and revitalized her spirit to continue loading the remaining supplies.

After the last box was loaded, she closed the hatch and then climbed into the driver’s cabin to see Chen Xu sitting in the back, eyes closed, a cold expression on his face, the epitome of someone who refused to communicate.

Last to board was 2003, who delicately sat in the co-pilot’s seat and gently buckled the safety belt, not daring to make a sound.

The cabin was quite spacious, with seven or eight seats. The rear seats were also sufficiently roomy, originally intended for the larger robots.

After the modifications, only three seats were left, the rest removed. The freed space now accommodated a table, two chairs, a single bed, and a bathroom.

“We’re off.”

Yang Jinxia gripped the steering wheel, announced their departure, and started the vehicle, driving out.

The passageway’s doors had been opened in advance, allowing them to leave the shelter unimpeded, departing from the place they had stayed for over a month.

Within the mainframe’s system database, one could find maps showing the locations of shelters nationwide. Just around this city, there were five such shelters, with G5232 being the smallest, graded G.

The closest one was shelter number A020. It was the largest within the city, capable of housing one hundred thousand people, classified as A level.

That was their first choice.

The transport vehicle wasn’t fast, its top speed only one hundred kilometers per hour. However, the road conditions were poor, so Yang Jinxia dared not drive too fast and kept to a speed of forty to fifty kilometers per hour.

An hour later, they drove into the mountains.

“Sir, an unidentified object is approaching,” the normally silent 2003 suddenly warned.

Chen Xu opened his eyes, took out his handgun, unlocked the safety, and listened intently.

“Here is your rifle.”

At that moment, Yang Jinxia from the driver’s seat offered him something. He initially did not want to bother, but when he caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye, he saw she was holding a rifle, identical to the one he had used.

That rifle had been his weapon on the first day, used to smash against a giant gorilla and completely dismantled.

“I collected all the parts and tried to fix it in the repair room. Fortunately, it worked.”

Chen Xu silently took the rifle, checked the magazine, and saw it was fully loaded.

Outside, monsters had begun to appear, resembling wolves but much more prominent and faster. In the blink of an eye, they charged.

He quickly chambered a round, lowered the vehicle window, and aimed at the leader.

Bang.

With each gunshot, giant wolves fell.

After emptying one magazine, over twenty giant wolves were down, striking enough fear into the rest that they dared not continue the chase.

The transport vehicle shook off the pack of giant wolves, and calm returned to the cabin.

Chen Xu ejected the magazine and looked at 2003.

2003 unbuckled the seat belt, hopped down from the seat, and quickly retrieved a box from under the bed. Opening it revealed bullets, which he handed to Chen Xu with both hands.

Having interacted with 2003 extensively, Chen Xu knew it had a high level of intelligence. Often, 2003 could deduce what you needed without being told. Many times, he even unconsciously treated it like a person.

He took a bullet, pressing them one by one into the magazine. Once full, he inserted the magazine back into the gun. Finally, he laid the rifle across his thighs and continued to rest with his eyes closed.

The recent shooting spree that took out the wolf pack had allowed him to vent the frustration boiling inside him. Still, he was unwilling to give her any attention.

Onward the transport vehicle drove toward its destination, encountering monster attacks twice more along the way, repelled by Chen Xu’s rifle each time.

After nearly three hours of travel, they finally saw the outer walls of A020, arriving at their destination smoothly.

The walls here were much taller than those of G5232, easily over ten meters high.

Yet, Chen Xu became even more vigilant. Following the general pattern of games, the place was like entering a second dungeon, likely to face the second level’s BOSS.
