When they woke some time later, none of them moved from where they were. They simply lay there, staring up at the stars that glittered overhead in the violet-gold sky.
"That was incredible," Arianna whispered.
Laela hummed in agreement, tracing lazy circles on Aiden’s chest with her fingertip. "Better than incredible."
Aiden’s lips curved into a brief smile, and he tightened his arms around them both for a moment.
But the smile faded quickly.
The weight he’d been carrying all day settled back onto him. He couldn’t keep this from them any longer.
Aiden sat up slowly, causing both women to shift and sit up as well. They looked at him with concern already forming on their faces.
"What’s wrong?" Laela asked, her hand reaching for his.
Aiden took a breath and met their eyes.
"I have to leave soon," he said. "To Eden. To fight Samael alongside the dragons."
The words made both their expressions fall.
Aiden continued. "I’m not sure how it will turn out," he said. "If we lose, the world as you know it will fall immediately after and everything will change for the worst."
Laela’s hand held his and when he looked at her, he saw tears forming at the corners of her eyes. But she was smiling.
"It’s okay," she said in a soft voice. "In truth, it hurts that this has to come now. But this is what I’m not going to do."
She squeezed his arm gently.
"I’m not going to say goodbye," Laela said. "Because I know you’ll come back to us."
Arianna leaned in and kissed him lightly on the cheek, with her hand resting on his other shoulder.
"Time and again you have faced the worst, and you have won. We have never doubted your strength. So just do your best, husband. We trust you’ll come back to us."
She smiled at him, and it was warm and encouraging.
Aiden looked between them both, his red eyes moving from one face to the other.
For a moment, he felt something crack inside him. A pressure behind his eyes that he hadn’t expected. These women were making a bloody dragon feel things.
He pulled them both close again, wrapping his arms around them tightly, and laughed lightly to cover the emotion threatening to spill over.
"You both are the best," he said.
