My Demon Friends-Chapter 643 - 610: Fight with a Covered Head_2
As for advanced spells, the Carving Technique was already enough. It has tremendous growth potential and its functionality is very strong. By the later stages, it becomes quite terrifying.
It's easy to understand that at the end of the last era, among the Six Families, the Jiang Family was clearly the most prominent.
The car continued to drive forward for a while.
Suddenly, Yin Le noticed something amiss and frowned as he stared in Zhou Li's direction, "Hm? When did that bucket of mulberries appear?"
"Ah?"
Zhou Li turned his head to look.
Next to him was a paper bucket, the kind usually used for popcorn, now filled with deep purple mulberries.
"Don't worry."
Zhou Li said nonchalantly, "Huai Xu sent them over."
After saying that, he picked up the bucket of mulberries and first passed it to Yin Le. "Try some."
"I actually didn't notice!"
"That's normal. He's good at this sort of thing."
"That's terrifying! They're not poisoned, are they?"
Yin Le, looking concerned, picked up a mulberry.
Zhou Li told him to take more and then passed the bucket to Ma Ke, who was in the passenger seat. After Ma Ke awkwardly took a few, Zhou Li apologetically said to the driver, "Sir, I'm sorry. Since you're driving, we'll have to eat these in front of you. I'll save some for you."
The driver laughed and waved his hands, repeatedly declining the offer.
Zhou Li didn't press further but still decided to save some for him.
A single glance told him these mulberries were picked from Miss Zheng's place; each one was fully ripe and bursting with juice. If the Old monster had haphazardly picked them from the roadside, there would certainly be many that were only half-purple or still green.
Knowing Miss Zheng was a good thing. At least the Old monster's habit of stealing fruit from everywhere had been curbed considerably.
Realizing Ma Ke was a bit nervous, Zhou Li didn't discuss Spells or Heavenly Masters any further with Yin Le. Instead, he started talking about the origins of crossing-bridge rice noodles, a topic with many versions. Then they agreed that after this mission was completed, they would find a highly-rated restaurant on a review app and try it out.
As they chatted about these everyday topics, Yin Le managed to draw Ma Ke into the conversation for a few exchanges, and Ma Ke soon relaxed considerably.
「Their destination was a village.」
It also had something to do with an undiscovered Gifted One.
The village's livestock were continually being caught and eaten at night. Pigs, cows, chickens, ducks, and dogs—none were spared. By daybreak, bloodstains or remnants of larger livestock could always be found: outside pens, in front of doors, on rooftops, and in the hills behind the village. Sometimes these were small pieces of meat, or parts harder to eat like cow heads or sheep horns.
At first, people thought the improvement in the environment had drawn a fierce beast from the mountains. They reported it to the police and set traps, but none of it worked. Even with villagers keeping watch at night, two people had been killed just last night.
It wasn't until a police officer overheard a little boy—who had always been considered not quite right in the head—that the case was transferred to the Celestial Master Department.
A typical irrational Demon.
But according to the boy, the Demon was enormous—as big as a large truck—and even had wings that allowed it to fly. Of course, size didn't directly indicate combat prowess, but adhering to the principle of preparing for the worst, Yin Le still called on Zhou Li.
「The car stopped outside the village, and they got out.」
A police officer was waiting for them there and pointed them in a direction. A narrow path there led around the village to a small hill on its outskirts.
As they walked, Yin Le said, "This Demon mostly comes out at night and is probably hiding somewhere right now. Let's find it first."
"I just hope it's not hiding in the Old Land World."
"Zhou Li, you hold back for now. Your actions are a bit too conspicuous. I'll take the lead. You two provide support. Use the Ventilation Technique to look after Ma Ke. We'll try to lure it to an isolated place, then either kill or capture it."
"Understood," Ma Ke nodded seriously.
"Okay," Zhou Li nodded too, though looking a bit regretful. "I brought a new product this time."
"What new product?" Yin Le asked, frowning.
"A Thunder Pill."
Zhou Li turned and took out a wooden bead from his backpack. It was finely crafted, heavy to the touch, with many patterns and hollowed-out sections, about the size of a baseball.
"A Thunder Pill?"
Yin Le repeated dazedly, then asked, "The kind of bead that can unleash lightning and attack indiscriminately?"
"Yes."
"The kind where the amount of Spiritual Power infused during production determines its power? A one-time-use item?"
"Yes."
"...Don't use it."
"Oh."
Zhou Li regretfully put it back into his bag.
Yin Le made up his mind. He would never again suggest Zhou Li learn advanced Spells.
As they reached the small hill, Yin Le scanned their surroundings. Seeing no sign of a massive Demon, he took a paper airplane out of his pocket.
He put his hands together, flattening the paper airplane between his palms, bowed his head, closed his eyes, and appeared to be in deep thought. Then he loosened his grip, unfolded the paper airplane, and tossed it into the air.
"I hope we can find it," he murmured.
"That way we can still go back to the county town for a bowl of rice noodles this afternoon."
The paper airplane twirled in the wind a few times and finally picked a direction, gently flying away.
"Follow it!"
Yin Le was the first to run off in that direction, saying as he ran, "After we get clear of the village, you can unleash your power at will. We'll say we encountered a bear or a tiger, and for various reasons, we used an explosive method to chase it deep into the mountains."
Zhou Li nodded.
The paper airplane flew slowly, but they had to run to keep up with it. Because it flew in a straight line, they had to run even faster if they took a detour.
Sometimes, when there was no way around, they had to wade through grass and brush.
The paper airplane maintained a height of about ten meters from the ground as it flew down the hill, continuing in the same direction. But the mountain terrain was complex, and the airplane wasn't very smart. Sometimes it would hit a tree and get stunned, only to recover mid-fall and take off again. It didn't know to fly around treetops and often got stuck in branches and leaves, delaying them.
They went uphill and downhill, over one mountain after another. Unfortunately, the mountains here were much larger than the small hills near Yan City.
Thankfully, Heavenly Masters possessed good stamina, and Ma Ke managed to keep up.
Eventually, the paper airplane flew over the largest mountain ahead and rounded its back. It headed straight for the mountainside but was stopped by a thick growth of bamboo that blocked any further progress.
The three of them immediately stopped and looked in that direction.
In recent years, fewer and fewer people stayed in the countryside. A year of raising pigs and farming couldn't compare to a month's wages from working elsewhere, so it simply wasn't worth it. Consequently, fewer people farmed, and mountainsides like this one were almost completely abandoned.
Without human cultivation, weeds proliferated. The bamboo grew taller than a person, and along with the hanging undergrowth, it densely screened the mountainside.
"There might be a cave inside."
Yin Le said with experience, "Old bandit caves or grottoes excavated by Buddhists aren't uncommon."
He glanced around, then frowned and said, "We're quite far from the village now. You can make your move, but tone it down a bit. Don't use the Red Light Technique. You wouldn't want people from the village below or other nearby villages to see a laser beam shooting across the sky, would you?" 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
"Hmm."
"I'll test it out first!"
Yin Le wasted no more words. A hand flashed to his pocket, and a paper knife flew out like lightning. Mid-air, it burst into a large mass of flames, creating a fiery curtain that swept forward.
WHOOMPH! Some of the dry bamboo immediately ignited. Fortunately, it was spring, so most of the surrounding vegetation was still green.
Immediately thereafter, Zhou Li sensed movement inside.
A low growl came from within.
It was indeed there, definitely inside.
This is a perfect opportunity to strike! he realized immediately. What am I waiting for?
Zhou Li took a deep breath and flexed his fingers. He then brought them together, forming a palm, and a white light began to shine from its center.
He pushed his palm out swiftly.
BOOM!
It was as if a massive amount of explosives had detonated inside the cave ahead. A tremendous shockwave burst forth, turning the cave mouth into a gaping maw that spewed out tons of soil and rock. Simultaneously, the shockwave ripped up the earth at the entrance and shredded the wild grass growing outside.
The effect of the attack was excellent.
The explosion quickly subsided. Smoke and dust filled the cave, and faint RUMBLES could still be heard, as if the interior was still collapsing.
Yin Le looked at Zhou Li, astonished, "What a freak!"
Ma Ke also swallowed hard, his peripheral vision involuntarily darting to the side—a stone flung out by the blast had struck the tree next to him, stripping off bark and sending a shiver of fear down his spine.
Just then, they heard the roar from inside the cave suddenly intensify.
It still has so much energy!
So that's how it is...
Zhou Li didn't dare to hesitate, fearing it would come out. He instantly raised both hands, and white light shone from both.
The intense white light pulsed with terrifying Spiritual Power.
Yin Le, without hesitation, stepped forward to shield Ma Ke. Simultaneously, he cast a Spell, aiming to keep the creature—which was stronger than he had imagined—trapped in the cave to 'enjoy' the bombardment.
