My Demon Friends-Chapter 512 - 491: Tricking you, there’s still hahaha
"Was last night’s turkey and roast goose good?" Zhou Li handed the phone back to Brother Nan.
"The turkey was tough, the roast goose was okay, but I’m not a fan of goose meat," Brother Nan critiqued. "Also, their flavors aren’t that great; this country can’t cook at all."
"Is that so?"
"What do you think?"
"I think so too."
"Echo!"
"..."
Hearing them talk about the turkey and roast goose, Tuanzi, who had been burying her head in her bowl, couldn’t hold back anymore. She lifted her head, rice grains still sticking to her mouth, and complained to Zhou Li, "Zhou Ni, did you guys eat too, meow? Last night, Huai Xu only gave Lord Dumpling a tiny bit!"
"Really?" Zhou Li showed concern.
"Yes!" Tuanzi said earnestly, gesturing with her little paws. "Those two were so big, and he only gave Lord Dumpling this little~~"
"Oh." Zhou Li expressed regret.
"Such a silly cat!" Huai Xu frowned. "How much can you possibly eat?"
"Lord Dumpling can eat this~~ much!" Tuanzi declared, her eyes sparkling.
"Nonsense!"
"You’re the nonsense!"
"You don’t even know how much you can eat. What else can you do?" Huai Xu glanced at Tuanzi calmly and concluded, "You’re done for in this life, I’m telling you."
"You, you, you, you, you’re talking nonsense!"
"Not only are you done for, but you’ve also dragged me down. I’m now embarrassed to even say I’m a demon who transferred from the human world to the Old Land World," Huai Xu added fuel to the fire.
"You, you, you..."
Tuanzi was so infuriated she looked like she might explode into a ball of fluff, her voice a high-pitched, childlike whine. But just when it mattered most, neither her tail nor her mouth would cooperate. She stammered, "You... you... you..." for ages without managing to form a complete sentence. The inability to retort when she desperately wanted to was the most upsetting feeling, and Lord Dumpling couldn’t bear it.
After a moment, she turned her head to look at Zhou Li, tears welling up in her eyes. "Zhou Ni, he’s bullying Lord Dumpling~~"
"What should we do then?" Zhou Li asked.
"Beat him up for me!" Tuanzi said ferociously.
"Okay, no problem."
Zhou Li rose to his feet calmly and walked towards Huai Xu.
Suddenly, Tuanzi’s eyes widened. She held her head high, staring unblinkingly at Zhou Li, even forgetting to be angry, her tears hovering in her eyes, unshed.
Brother Nan also watched Zhou Li.
Huai Xu, the one being approached, blinked and watched Zhou Li walk up to him.
He looked up, somewhat surprised.
Zhou Li remained calm.
Then, Zhou Li reached out and grabbed him by the clothes.
"BANG!"
Pinned to the sofa by Huai Xu, Zhou Li remained calm. He just turned his head to look at Tuanzi and said sincerely, "I’m sorry, Lord Dumpling. I did my best."
Tuanzi, stunned, immediately dropped her bowl, let out a howl, and pounced on Huai Xu. A second later, Huai Xu held Zhou Li down with one hand and, with the other, grabbed Tuanzi by the scruff of her neck, lifting her into the air.
At first, Tuanzi struggled fiercely. Her short little legs flailed as she tried to attack Huai Xu, mumbling things like, "Don’t hurt Zhou Li!" "Zhou Li, Lord Dumpling is protecting you!" and "I, Lord Dumpling, am going all out against you today!" But she soon grew tired. Her voice weakened, and her movements slowed until she hung motionless in Huai Xu’s grasp, eventually even learning to relax, just like Zhou Li.
The human and the cat looked at each other.
Zhou Li was calm.
So was Tuanzi.
Nearby, Brother Nan cracked sunflower seeds, her mouth twisted into a smirk.
「December 31.」
「Thursday.」
「10 A.M.」
Zhou Li sat in the exam hall, head down, diligently answering questions.
The proctor was a teacher from their own faculty. According to past experience, teachers from their own faculty tended to be stricter proctors than those from other faculties. And so it was. The proctor first scrambled the seating arrangement, destroying the carefully constructed "stellar systems" centered around the top students. Then, with harsh words, he intimidated everyone. Finally, two proctors, one at the front and one at the back, closely monitored everyone’s movements.
"If you can’t answer the questions, failing is a probabilistic event. But if I catch you cheating, failing is an absolute certainty!"
"Severe cheating means expulsion!"
Zhou Li couldn’t help but pick at his ear. So noisy.
Looking up, he saw a tall, slender, handsome young man with his hands clasped behind his back, striding with a splay-footed gait as he patrolled the classroom.
The young man wore a stern expression. He occasionally turned his head to look left and right, sometimes frowning or shaking his head. Mimicking the proctor’s tone, he ceaselessly emitted a stream of noise that only Zhou Li could hear: "If you fail, just retake the exam. If you fail the retake, it just proves you haven’t learned well. So, repeating the course would actually be a good thing for you, helping you progress academically."
Zhou Li felt like throwing up. This is nothing short of a psychological attack.
Suddenly, the young man turned his head and stared at Zhou Li, his brows furrowing ever tighter. "Student, why are you looking around?"
Zhou Li was speechless.
The young man continued, "Don’t look around!"
But then he paused, his tone shifting to become more cordial. "Is it that you can’t solve the problems? Tell your teacher, and I’ll peek at the answers from your Little Cousin for you!"
Zhou Li took a deep breath, then slowly exhaled. Finally, with a numb expression, he lowered his head and continued to focus on the exam paper.
This test paper comprised only four sections: multiple-choice, true/false, term definitions, and short-answer questions.
The multiple-choice and true/false questions alone were worth 50 points. There were no fill-in-the-blanks. The probability of guessing correctly on a multiple-choice question was one in four, and for true/false, one in two. It was clear the teacher really cared for them.
Zhou Li had already finished these two major sections.
The remaining two major sections were also simple.
3. Term Definitions:
1. Bound water;
2. Free water;
...
4. Short-Answer Questions:
1. If a plant cell is placed into pure water, how will its water potential, osmotic potential, pressure potential, and volume change?
2. Why shouldn’t well water be used to irrigate crops at noon on a sunny summer day?
...
These were all questions that had appeared in regular homework assignments, and they were from the simpler parts. One could say the teacher was practically giving away points. Unless someone had copied all their homework and never paid attention in class, they could still score at least a few points on each question. Adding these to the previous sections, along with participation grades and the teacher’s kind heart, failing was nearly impossible.
Zhou Li turned to look at Brother Nan.
He saw that Brother Nan had already put down her pen and was propping her chin on her hand, looking utterly bored.
As if sensing his gaze, she also turned her head slightly and glanced at him. But after just one look, she went back to her daydreaming, seemingly completely uninterested in him.
"That student, don’t look around!"
Upon hearing this, Zhou Li frowned. So annoying. Wait. That was the teacher speaking.
Zhou Li quickly averted his gaze and focused on answering the questions, ignoring the snickering from the Old monster next to him.
Ten minutes later, the teacher allowed students to submit their papers. By this time, most students had already finished. Without any intention of checking their work, they just sat there looking at each other. Only two or three handed in their papers and left.
This was because the teacher had said beforehand that the questions were easy and had told them to wait a while before submitting, even if they finished quickly, to avoid gossip from other teachers.
Zhou Li also decided to sit for a while longer, enjoying the sight of Brother Nan fidgeting as if there were nails on her stool.
