My Demon Friends-Chapter 444 - 440 Congratulations Baozi
The afternoon sun in Chunming was even more brilliant. Looking out the window, it seemed as though summer had arrived. The light passed through the windows, casting dazzling spots on the floor, yet the room temperature was extremely pleasant.
Dormitory 106 was unusually quiet.
Brother Nan put on her headphones. The game had already started, and Huai Xu’s voice was constantly coming through them.
"Can you hear?"
"Can you hear me?"
"Hello? Hello?"
"HUFF! HUFF HUFF! If you hear me, answer back!"
Brother Nan leaned closer to the screen and checked Zhou Li’s status. Finding it clear, she couldn’t help but say speechlessly, "Can’t you just reply to her? You hear her constantly going ’hello hello hello,’ and no one’s responding. Don’t you feel sorry for her?"
"She’s testing the mic," Zhou Li’s voice was very low. "It’s a normal habit for the elderly."
"PFFT..."
"Let’s start."
Brother Nan began searching for the game.
Wind started blowing outside, rustling the trees in the hallway. The balcony door also moved with the wind, its old hinges making a slight creaking sound. Someone in a dormitory down the hall must have come and gone, closing their door with too much force. A loud BANG traveled far into Brother Nan’s room. All of this added to the leisurely atmosphere of the afternoon.
Tuanzi sat next to Brother Nan, obediently watching her play the game.
Brother Nan was worried that Tuanzi, by sitting on the desk too close to the computer, might become short-sighted. So, she moved Cotton Swab’s suitcase over and stacked it next to her chair to create a small platform for Tuanzi to sit on. This would keep her a bit further from the computer.
Mianmian and Qian Qian went out for milk tea. They said that after finishing their drinks, they’d go to the sports field to check out handsome guys. The weather was indeed suitable for a walk.
Baozi also wanted to go for milk tea, but feeling unwell, she had to lie in bed watching Tuanzi watch Brother Nan play games.
"See, that’s me."
Brother Nan pointed at a hero on the screen.
Tuanzi meowed, following her gesture, then quickly shifted her gaze elsewhere. Light flickered in her eyes, yet she sat still, exceedingly well-behaved.
"AHAHAHA!"
A shrill laugh came through the headphones. A Mouse suddenly appeared, opening fire wildly. Brother Nan’s and Zhou Li’s health bars evaporated as if steamed, and the screen instantly turned black and white.
"That hero does so much damage." Zhou Li was disheartened. "I had the scanner on and everything."
"Isn’t it disgusting?"
"It’s so disgusting! What’s its name? It keeps popping out of nowhere and has killed me several times now!"
"Mouse."
"Is it easy to play? I see he’s already killed eighteen people."
"It’s very easy in Ultra Rapid Fire."
"Is it good at pushing towers?"
"Yeah, pretty good. And it can attack towers from outside their range when the ultimate is active. It’s just really slow without minions." Brother Nan detected something was off. "Why do you ask?"
"I want to play this one next round."
"Few people use this hero to sneak towers. They mostly use it to ambush and kill others. Really nasty stuff."
"No worries, I’m going to play it."
"???"
Brother Nan was momentarily dumbfounded, falling into deep thought. She suspected there might be a slight issue with her boyfriend’s psyche.
「An hour later.」
Tuanzi, sitting on the suitcase, began to feel drowsy.
In the game, Zhou Li had already self-taught two Rune and gear combos. One was the Blade Cluster instant-kill build, focusing on sudden appearances to wipe out an opponent’s health bar in a blink and get loads of kills, putting enemies constantly on edge. The other was a disruptive, fast-moving build for sneaking towers. This build was all about running around, using invisibility, speed, and mind games. He would slip away from unexpected spots and reappear just as unexpectedly, exhausting opponents until they were infuriated to death and cursed him out in the public chat.
Brother Nan’s expression grew more solemn.
The afternoon was well underway.
Clouds began to gather in the sky, the wind picked up, and the shadows on the ground started shifting with it.
Tuanzi’s head hung low, eyes squinting, her little head trembling as if she were about to fall asleep while sitting, teetering on the edge of a fall.
Brother Nan watched Zhou Li’s Mouse, invisible in front of an enemy tower with a bunch of allied minions around. But he was neither pushing the tower nor attacking the enemy minions, just standing there. She sank into deeper contemplation.
"What-what are you doing?"
"There are so many minions; they’ll come for them."
"..."
Suddenly, with a BANG, a Piltover Enforcer crashed down in front of Zhou Li.
"AHAHAHA!"
With Mouse’s deranged laugh and a few SWISH SWISH SWISH sounds, the Enforcer’s health evaporated. She died before she could even stabilize.
Only then did the Mouse begin to push the tower.
The Most Adorable (Piltover Enforcer): ???
The Most Adorable (Piltover Enforcer): Ruthless, bro!
Brother Nan heard Zhou Li’s chuckle through the headset.
After farming the wave of minions, Mouse didn’t push the tower but instead left leisurely, heading to the enemy’s jungle to lie in wait.
Brother Nan scratched her head, utterly perplexed.
The enemy’s Nexus was on the verge of collapse.
Zhou Li had already gotten 38 kills.
The Most Adorable (Piltover Enforcer): Mouse Brother, wanna party up? I’m a girl.
Child of Destiny (Twilight Eye): ?
A Salty Fish (Plague Source): No thanks.
DING!
Twilight Eye is on the way!
All of a sudden, Twilight Eye charged into the enemy fountain. Mouse, also unmercifully, stepped forward, activated his ultimate, and mowed down the just-respawned Enforcer and Lu Lu, who was AFK.
40 kills.
After pondering for a moment, Brother Nan said, "Let’s stop here for today. Little Trash Cat has gotten so bored she’s fallen asleep. I’ll carry her to bed."
As soon as the words left her mouth, Tuanzi, hearing her voice, opened her eyes. Though still very groggy, she immediately raised a paw to rub her eyes and looked up at Brother Nan. "Lord Dumpling didn’t fall asleep... Lord Dumpling was just closing her eyes!"
Brother Nan obviously couldn’t understand her.
Then, from the upper bunk, a voice came, "How about I play with Little Trash Cat instead? That way she won’t be bored..."
Brother Nan turned around and saw Baozi perched on the bed, watching her and Tuanzi with a careful and hopeful gaze.
After thinking it over, Brother Nan nodded.
"Then come on down."
"Okay!"
Baozi immediately scrambled up, ready to get off the bed.
Everyone climbed up the ladder facing it, but when climbing down, she was accustomed to having her back to the ladder. Consequently, her butt inevitably rubbed against it, causing a sore, stinging pain.
Once on the ground, Baozi subconsciously touched her butt.
"HISS!"
But it wasn’t a problem. If it hurt only when she touched it and not when she didn’t, it was as good as not hurting.
In the blink of an eye, Baozi had forgotten the pain. She began taking out the toys they had bought the previous night one by one, trying to amuse Tuanzi.
「Five minutes later.」
Baozi stood bewildered in the dorm room, facing an indifferent Tuanzi, wondering what went wrong. Tuanzi had loved these trinkets last night, hugging them without letting go, so why was she disinterested today?
Baozi, still not giving up, put the music box in front of Tuanzi.
Tuanzi turned her face away.
Baozi then spun the little pinwheel swiftly and held it up to her.
Tuanzi swatted it away with her paw.
Seeing this, Brother Nan remarked, "She doesn’t like it."
"How can that be..."
Baozi was unwilling to accept this reality.
This little pinwheel was one she had bought for Tuanzi with her own money. Small as it was, it glowed, spun, and played music. It had cost her at least a week’s worth of meal funds.
Surely all that couldn’t have gone to waste?
A little kitten’s affections couldn’t possibly change that quickly...
Baozi tried to reassure herself, scratching her head and muttering, "It must be because she’s too sleepy, not spirited, so she’s not interested in playing. She’ll be fine in a while and will love it again."
"Stop dreaming. This Little Trash Cat is exactly like that, always looking for something new. I warned you guys not to spend money on her," Brother Nan said.
"But... but you also spent a lot of money buying her canned food and snacks, and even more than us!" Baozi still refused to agree with Brother Nan. To earn money, she had served food in the canteen today until her hands ached—the ladle was so big and heavy. Plus, the pain she had just endured from the ladder had to count towards her work-study earnings. She didn’t accept it; she didn’t believe it. "Don’t lie to me!"
"What I buy, she eats," Brother Nan said.
"This... I don’t believe it!"
"Then why do you think I call her Little Trash Cat?"
"I don’t believe it!"
"HEH HEH. Does your head hurt?"
"Uh... no, no, it doesn’t hurt!"
"Then what are you scratching for?"
"It’s... it’s a little itchy..."
"Oh," Brother Nan nodded. "Maybe it’s time for your brain to grow."
