Chapter 68: I’ll Let You Off The Hook Today

Lena shook her head frantically. "No! I swear—"

"You whore!" he snarled. "Just because he might be awakened, you’ll go back to him now, won’t you?!"

Her voice broke. "That won’t happen! Please, you’re hurting me—"

Students nearby froze.

They saw, heard, stood there witnessing the ordeal...

However, no one moved.

Because Caleb was awakened.

Somewhere nearby, West watched from the distance while walking over.

The crowd subconciously parted the way for him as he stepped forward with his school bag slung over his shoulders.

’It’s his ex, he’ll definitely intervene...’ They all had thoughts similar to this running through their minds.

Inside the summon domain, Gor’thala straightened.

"...Master," she said quietly, "that male appears unstable."

West didn’t respond...

He just kept moving.

Lena eyes seemed to light up hopefully when she spotted West’s approaching figure.

However, to everyone’s surprise... West walked past her.

Lena watched him from the corner of her eye as he moved by without slowing, without turning his head, without even a flicker of recognition.

There was no anger... nor pity... or any change in expression for that matter.

Just indifference...

And somehow, that hurt more than Caleb’s grip.

A hollow pit opened in her stomach as realization sank in.

He doesn’t care anymore.

Not even enough to hate her.

To West, that Chapter of his life was closed... Sealed... Completely burned.

Whatever was happening to her now was, self-inflicted. She had chosen Caleb so it was time for her to bear the consequences of that choice.

Inside the summon domain, Gor’thala observed quietly. She felt no moral outrage, no urge to interfere. She was not a savior, not a hero, not bound by human sentimentality.

Her only purpose was her master’s will.

West had chosen not to intervene so she did nothing.

The situation should have ended there... however, it didn’t.

Because someone else stepped forward.

"S-Stop it!"

A small, trembling voice rang out.

Caleb barely registered it at first, continuing on without a single reaction.

Mira Han stood a few steps away with her fists clenched so tightly, her knuckles were white. Her legs were shaking, but she forced herself forward anyway.

"Let her go," she said, louder this time. "You’re hurting her."

Caleb turned his head slowly with irritation flashing across his face like a spark hitting oil.

"...Who do you think you are?"

Mira swallowed, but she didn’t back away. She reached out, trying to grab his arm.

"Please—"

Caleb shoved her.

Unprepared for the strength behind that casual shove, Mira was sent stumbling backwards.

She cried out as she hit the ground, scraping her palm and elbow against the rough concrete. A sharp sting shot up her arm.

Gasps rippled through the nearby students.

Mira stayed down for half a second.

Then she pushed herself back up.

Her knees were shaking. Tears blurred her vision. But she rushed in again, grabbing at Caleb’s sleeve with both hands.

"Stop it!" she cried. "You can’t do this!"

That was when Caleb snapped.

His face twisted as fury overtook.

"How dare you touch me!" he roared and raised his arm, sending a backhanded strike towards Mira’s face.

As an awakened, if it landed, Mira would have been sent flying.

However, it never landed.

The earth shattering impact Mira expected even after her eyes closed halfway flinching, never came.

This was because, a hand had appeared out of nowhere and clamped around Caleb’s wrist mid-swing, stopping it cold.

The impact cracked through the air like a gunshot.

Caleb froze.

So did everyone else.

West stood there with his grip iron-tight and his eyes unamused.

"So now you’re a woman beater," West said calmly. "Didn’t think you’d sink that low."

Caleb’s pupils shrank.

Fear flashed across his face before he could stop it.

West.

He’d been relieved earlier when West walked away. Relieved enough to keep pushing, keep spiraling.

But now West was here.

And suddenly, Caleb couldn’t breathe properly.

"Mind your business," Caleb snapped, trying to sound confident.

His voice cracked halfway through but West didn’t let go.

Instead, he stepped forward and pulled Mira gently against his side, wrapping one arm around her shoulders in a protective gesture that felt instinctive.

"This is my business," West replied coolly. "Feel free to treat your girlfriend however you like—"

Lena flinched at the words.

"—but don’t go putting your STD-infected hands on my friend."

The surrounding students sucked in a collective breath.

Caleb’s face flushed red.

"You—!" he yelled. "An unawakened has no right to tell me what to do!"

West tilted his head slightly, unimpressed.

"Oh?" he said. "Funny. You sounded pretty confident last time too."

Caleb stiffened.

West leaned in just enough for only Caleb to hear.

"What if I gave you a taste of the same medicine you gave me back then in the cafeteria..." 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

Caleb didn’t even get to reply before West suddenly grabbed him by the hair and shoved him downward while raising one knee.

Bam!

A knee to the face, sent Caleb’s nose twisting the other way as blood burst out of his face.

"Arrghhh!"

He groaned in pain but West didn’t stop there...

West proceeded to pull him down by the hair and press his face down to the very ground.

"Now how does it feel to be the same as everyone else... trampled on the ground like a completely valueless piece of trash?"

Caleb was breathing heavily now... he spotted the looks of disgust from everyone in the surroundings and it scrambled his brain.

He momentarily forgot how to activate his branch as West kept his lips pressed directly onto the ground for a couple of seconds.

Caleb had never felt humiliation sting this badly.

"You are... nothing... I am... I am..."

Caleb struggled to form a single coherent sentence.

West strength was way beyond what he expected... he felt like he was being pressed down by a mountain.

Just when it felt like he was about to sink into the ground from the force, West suddenly released his grip.

"Oh right... I have somewhere to be," as soon as he stepped back, Caleb jumped to his feet with dust and blood smeared across his face.

He gritted his teeth in fury as he took on a battle stance. "How dare you?! You little piece of shit! I’ll teach you a lesson today!"

"Relax," West murmured upon noticing that Caleb was about to activate his branch. "I’ll give you a rematch later if you feel like replaying today’s humiliation but not right now. Some people actually have jobs... unlike you."

The fear came back instantly.

Caleb took another step back. Despite being free now, he wasn’t even confident that he could take West on even if he activated his branch.

"Tch," he scoffed, forcing a laugh and wiping his face with the back of his hand. "I’ll let you off the hook today."

No one believed him.

"Next time," Caleb continued, backing away, "I’ll teach you a lesson."

With that, he turned and stormed off.

Lena stood there, shaking with tears streaming down her face now that the danger had passed.

She turned toward West.

"Th-thank you," she said softly. "I—"

"I didn’t do it for you," West said coldly.

The words hit harder than any slap.

Lena’s lips parted, but no sound came out.

Without looking back, West walked away with Mira, leaving Lena alone in the middle of the gathered crowd.

-"Damn, Caleb really got his ass handed to him again today."

-"Brother is so shameless that he claimed to have let West off the hook."

-"Got it all recorded on video. Posting it on all social platforms right now."

-"Yo why is West so strong though? This shit ain’t normal!"

Voices of the crowd overlapped in the background even after West had already exited the school with Mira.
