Chapter 100: You Just Lost It

Weekend arrived quietly without alarms or school rush.

Just morning sunlight filtering through the curtains of West’s apartment.

He had woken up later than usual, planning to spend the day refining his new skills which included testing Volt Manipulation and maybe experimenting with Kinetic Absorption somewhere discreet.

Instead, the moment he walked into the living room, he froze.

Mark was seated comfortably on the couch.

Across from him, sitting elegantly with one leg crossed over the other, dressed in a tailored ivory blazer and slim black trousers, was Miss Zu Li.

The Miss Zu Li.

Leader of Dragon Fang Gang and one of the city’s most powerful awakened figures.

West stopped mid-step.

"...How?"

Mark looked up and grinned broadly.

"Ah, there he is!"

Zu Li turned her head slowly and a composed smile formed the moment her eyes landed on West.

"Good morning."

West didn’t return the smile but Mark stood up excitedly.

"Son... why didn’t you tell me you had awakened?"

West mouth hung slightly open for a brief second as his gaze shifted slowly from his father to Zu Li.

Zu Li held his stare without flinching but she could feel how piercing it was like he was triggered by the current scenario.

Mark continued, oblivious to the tension thickening the air.

"Miss Zu Li came to my workplace yesterday! Imagine that! To my workplace!" He laughed incredulously. "I nearly fainted when she introduced herself."

West’s eyes narrowed.

"She explained everything," Mark continued. "About your awakening and about opportunities."

Zu Li added gently, "I thought it was important to inform your father personally."

West nearly cursed but he held it in. He wanted to inform his father about it himself but not yet.

Mark’s voice carried excitement like a child’s.

"She said not only are you awakened, but she wants you to join Dragon Fang. Not just that—she wants you as her apprentice."

He turned to West proudly.

"Do you know how big that is? She’s always on television. Every other week there’s a report about Dragon Fang operations."

Mark’s excited was understandable. Which father wouldn’t want their son affiliated with someone like her? Every parent would want the best for their child, after all.

Mark clasped his hands together.

"I knew your future was set the moment she told me."

Zu Li’s smile softened.

"There are many benefits, West. Training resources. Protection. Guidance. You wouldn’t have to stumble your way through the awakened world alone."

West finally spoke with a calm voice.

"I didn’t expect you to stoop this low."

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Mark blinked.

"Son?"

West stepped forward slightly with his eyes locked onto Zu Li.

"Finding my father’s workplace. Showing up here."

His lips curved faintly but there was no humor.

"Now that you know my apartment... I suppose I should expect others as well."

Zu Li shook her head immediately.

"I came alone."

Her tone lost some of its polished sharpness.

"No one else will ever find out where you live."

West’s voice sharpened.

"Why involve my father?"

Mark looked between them, confused.

"What’s going on? She was just informing me—"

West cut him off gently but firmly.

"Dad."

He kept his gaze on Zu Li.

"You shouldn’t have brought him into this."

Zu Li’s fingers tightened slightly on her knee.

"It wasn’t my intention to coerce you."

"It feels like coercion."

A flicker of guilt passed across her face.

"I only wanted transparency."

West’s composure cracked slightly as anger bled into his tone.

"You could have spoken to me directly. You had my attention already."

Before Zu Li could remind West that he had been completely evasive, Mark frowned slightly.

"Where are your manners, West? This is Miss Zu Li."

West didn’t take his eyes off her.

"Father... Miss Zu Li was just leaving."

His voice hardened.

"Weren’t you, Miss Zu Li?"

The room went quiet as Zu Li held his gaze.

For a brief moment, she saw something in his eyes she hadn’t expected.... authority...

It unsettled her.

She exhaled softly.

"...Yes."

She rose gracefully.

"I was just leaving."

Mark looked baffled.

"But—"

Zu Li gently picked up her handbag and stepped forward.

She placed a smooth black card on the coffee table.

"My private number."

Then she paused in front of West and lowered her voice.

"I don’t know why you’re so adamant."

Her eyes searched his face.

"But eventually... you will have to join a gang. Nobody survives this awakened world alone."

West didn’t hesitate.

"I never said I was doing it alone."

A faint smirk touched his lips.

"Just not doing it with you."

The words struck harder than he intended.

He leaned slightly closer.

"If you had a chance before... congratulations."

"You just lost it."

For the first time since entering the apartment, Miss Zu Li faltered.

A small breath escaped her lips.

"I’m sorry... if I came off the wrong way."

Her tone softened further.

"I’ll leave now. I don’t want to further annoy you."

Mark stood there, stunned. Since when did the pompous and prideful Miss Zu Li turn into a composed and respectful kitty? Why were they talking like they already knew each other? What is really going on?

All sorts of thoughts plagued Mark’s mind as Zu Li walked toward the door. 𝒇𝒓𝙚𝒆𝔀𝓮𝓫𝒏𝓸𝙫𝓮𝓵.𝓬𝙤𝙢

Outside at the hallway, Zu Li remained still for a moment.

A strange sensation twisted in her chest.

It was guilt.

She hadn’t felt that since she became awakened...

When did she start apologizing?

When did she start... explaining herself?

She descended the stairs and exited the building.

A black sedan waited at the curb.

As she stepped into the passenger seat, the car drove off immediately.

In the seat, she leaned back, closed her eyes and replayed the scene.

His glare... his refusal... his refusal to bend.

Her lips parted slightly.

"When did I start becoming so humble in front of someone else..."

An 18-year-old boy.

She had faced veteran gang leaders... negotiated with officials... threatened powerful figures...

Yet, in his presence, she found herself shrinking.... choosing softer words... wanting to avoid displeasing him.
