Chapter 15: Chapter 15

I don’t know how much time had passed when I woke up in complete darkness. The first thing I noticed was the smell of disinfectant.

I opened my eyes and glanced around, realizing I was in a hospital room.

“Vivienne, you’re awake? How do you feel?”

Hearing that familiar voice, I saw Alexander standing at the foot of my bed, his handsome face coming into view.

I instinctively placed my hand on my abdomen, feeling a bit nervous.

“I’m fine.” I looked out the window—it was already dark outside.

Just then, my stomach growled twice.

“You’re hungry, aren’t you? Should I have something brought in?” he asked.

“I’m afraid that’ll take too long. I’m really hungry right now. Could you go out and buy me something?” I looked up at him, trying to make my voice sound as weak as possible.

For the first time, Alexander seemed caught off guard by my obedient expression. He nodded instinctively. “Alright, I’ll go get something for you. Stay here in the room. If you need anything, call the nurse. Don’t get out of bed.”

I nodded, and he left the room.

As I watched him walk away, a sense of emptiness filled me. I pressed the call button, and the nurse came in quickly.

“Is there anything you need, or is something bothering you?”

“Nurse, I want to know about my baby...” I asked softly, feeling uneasy.

“Don’t worry, your baby is fine. The pregnancy is still a bit unstable, but it’s nothing to be too concerned about. You’ve sprained your ankle as well, so we recommend staying in bed and limiting movement for the next few days.”

I let out a relieved sigh, the weight in my chest lifting.

“Thank you, nurse.”

“You’re welcome. Considering the baby, we haven’t prescribed any oral medications. We’ve only given you an ointment for your ankle. Just apply it to the affected area and change it regularly. You should be able to leave the hospital tomorrow.”

“Alright, thank you.”

Soon after, Alexander returned with some food.

He brought a meal from the hospital cafeteria: one meat dish, one vegetable dish, a bowl of soup, a portion of rice, a pear, and a bottle of milk.

I opened the food container and started eating. “Why don’t you go home for now? The nurse is here, and you can pick me up tomorrow when I’m discharged. If you’re busy, you can just have James come instead.”

“No, I’ll stay here with you. Your leg is injured, and it’s inconvenient for you to be alone here. I’ve already called James to bring me a change of clothes.” He said gently.

A warm feeling spread through me. “Alright.”

Suddenly, Alexander’s phone rang. He took it out of his pocket, glanced at the screen, and stepped outside as he answered, “Hello, Isabella?”

At the mention of that name, my eyes involuntarily narrowed, and I perked up, straining to listen.

But he walked too far, and I couldn’t hear anything.

After a moment, Alexander returned with an apologetic look. “Vivienne, I’m sorry, Isabella isn’t doing well. I need to go see her now. I’ve already called James to bring Maggie over. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow.”

Before I could say anything, he hurriedly left the room.

Watching him leave, I couldn’t help but smile bitterly.

In the end, James arrived with the maid and stayed with me in the hospital for the night.

The next morning, after a quick change of dressings, James took me home.

With Maggie’s help, I used a cane to walk to the car.

Only James was in the car.

Alexander hadn’t come.

I lowered my head, silently pressing my lips together.

I sat in the car, watching the scenery flash by outside the window, but deep down, I couldn’t help but wish that Alexander would appear before me.

I was so easily soothed.

But Alexander wasn’t willing to spare even this little bit of thought for me.

Because of my leg injury, I couldn’t go to the office. I had the assistant bring my laptop home so I could handle a few simple tasks.

To avoid the inconvenience of going up and down stairs, I stayed in the bedroom on the second floor, hardly leaving.

Even meals were brought to my room by Maggie.

At that moment, I was busy working when I heard the sound of the door opening. I thought it was Maggie bringing my meal, so I casually said, “Just put it on the table; I’ll eat in a bit.”

“Why don’t you eat first, then get back to work? It’s not like it’ll take long,” came Alexander’s voice from the doorway.

I looked up and realized it was Alexander who had come to bring me food. “You’re off work?”

“Mm.”

I closed my laptop, and Alexander placed the food on my bedside table before heading downstairs to eat.

After I finished, he came back upstairs to collect the dishes.

A while later, when Alexander came up again, he had a bag in his hand, filled with some of my medications.

It contained not only the medicine prescribed by the hospital but also the medication I had been taking for my “stomach discomfort.”

I couldn’t help but feel nervous as I watched him pull out each bottle. My fingers gripped the hem of my clothes tightly.

“These are the stomach medicines from the hospital, but why this packaging?” Alexander asked, holding up two white bottles without labels, shaking them slightly as if confused.

I hurriedly explained, “I switched them out myself. The boxes were too bulky, and I might have to travel next week, so I put them in smaller bottles instead.”

The excuse seemed plausible enough, and Alexander didn’t press further. He simply said, “Your foot might not be healed by the weekend. If it’s not urgent, let someone else go.”

I nodded, feeling a little relieved inside.

He glanced at the rest of the medicines in the bag, took out the ointment, and asked, “The hospital only gave you an ointment? No anti-inflammatories or blood circulation meds?”

I shook my head. "My stomach’s been acting up lately, and the doctor said those medications might irritate it, so they didn’t prescribe them." 𝑓𝑟ℯ𝘦𝓌𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝓋𝑒𝓁.𝑐ℴ𝓂

Stomach problems again.

Alexander frowned slightly, as if sensing something wasn’t quite right but couldn’t put his finger on it.

"I’ll help you change your bandages."

He sat by the bed with the gauze and medication, lifting the blanket.

"How about letting Maggie do it?"

"Should I call her up?" he asked gently.

I pursed my lips, staying silent.

Alexander knew me too well. I often said one thing, but meant another in situations like this.

His large hand gently took my injured foot, and his warmth made me want to pull away.

He carefully removed the old gauze, revealing the swollen ankle and the ointment that hadn’t fully absorbed.

First, he wiped off the excess with an alcohol swab, exposing the pale, swollen joint, which looked like a large bread roll.

Next, he took a cotton swab, applied a fresh layer of ointment, wrapped it with gauze, and tied it securely.

"All done."

He adjusted my blanket and put the medications back in the bag.

"Thank you."

"No need to thank me. No need for pleasantries," Alexander murmured.

At that moment, his phone rang again. He glanced at the screen, his brows furrowing slightly. He answered the call.

"Hello, Isabella..."

Whatever was said on the other end made his expression turn serious. "Alright, I understand. I’ll be there soon."

He hung up quickly, his pace quickening as he headed for the door.

Watching his retreating figure, I suddenly called out, "Will you be back tonight?"
