My Billionaire Ex Beg For A Second Chance-Chapter 70: The Question That Waited
"I’m gonna catch you, Nathan!" Maya’s voice rang out, high and gleeful, as she chased after her twin brother. Her arms outstretched as she darted around the living room.
Nathan, with a mischievous grin, zigzagged between the furniture, narrowly avoiding a stack of magazines on the coffee table. "No way! You’ll never catch me!" he retorted, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
Felix sat on the couch, a warm smile playing on his lips as he watched the twins’ playful antics. His living room, usually calm and quiet, had transformed into a little playground. Toys were scattered across the floor, and the cushions bore the evidence of impromptu fort-building.
Earlier that day, Felix had picked up Nathan and Maya from the daycare center—a temporary arrangement until Jazz could collect them. The twins were ecstatic, not only because they were spending the evening with Felix but also because it was their first sleepover at his place.
Upon arriving at his home, the children’s eyes had widened in awe.
"Your house is so big!" Nathan had exclaimed, spinning around to take in the spacious living room.
"It has everything!" Maya added, pointing to the large television and the array of bookshelves lining the walls.
Felix chuckled, ruffling Nathan’s hair. "It just seems big because you two are still small," he said, his eyes twinkling.
As night fell, Felix had prepared his special fusilli pasta—a dish so renowned that even Katherine had once praised it, much to his pride. The twins had devoured their meals with gusto, their faces smeared with tomato sauce and joy.
Now, as the children continued their game of tag, Felix spoke up, a hint of warning in his tone.
"Be careful, you two! We don’t want any injuries on your first night here."
But the twins were too engrossed in their game to heed his warning. Maya, in a strategic move, darted toward the couch and threw her arms around Felix, using him as a shield.
"Safe!" she declared, peeking out from behind him.
Nathan skidded to a halt, his hands on his hips. "Hey! That’s cheating! You can’t use Uncle Felix as a hiding spot!"
Felix laughed, patting the empty space beside him. "Alright, that’s enough running for now. Come sit down before you two turn into a tornado and blow this house away."
Nathan grinned and plopped down next to him, the three of them forming a cozy trio on the couch.
Felix draped his arms around the twins, pulling them close. Feeling their little bodies snuggled up against him made him quietly happy.
After a moment of comfortable silence, Nathan looked up at Felix, his expression curious.
"Uncle Felix," he began, "why don’t we have a dad?"
Felix’s heart skipped a beat. He glanced down at the boy, his mind racing for the right words.
"What makes you say that, buddy?" he asked gently.
Nathan shrugged. "Well, everyone has a dad, right? But we don’t see ours. Where is he?"
Maya, her eyes wide, nodded in agreement. "Do you know him, Uncle Felix?"
Felix took a deep breath, choosing his words carefully. "That’s a lot of questions," he said with a soft smile. "Have you talked to your mom about this?"
The twins exchanged glances before shaking their heads.
"She doesn’t talk about him," Nathan said quietly.
Felix nodded, understanding the delicate nature of the situation. He knew that Katherine had her reasons for keeping certain truths until the right time.
"Well," he began, "everyone does have a dad. Sometimes, though, circumstances make it so we don’t see them. But that doesn’t mean they don’t exist."
Maya leaned against him, her voice barely above a whisper. "But why don’t we see ours?"
Felix wrapped his arms tighter around them. "That’s something your mom will talk to you about later, buddy."
He paused. The words felt strange coming out of his mouth—not because they were wrong, but because, as much as he wanted to tell them the truth, he just couldn’t. Hell, he had only just found out himself.
Felix looked at the twins again. They were so trusting, so ready to believe anything he said. That alone made his chest ache.
"The truth is," he added, choosing his words even more slowly this time, "I don’t know everything either. Grown-ups don’t always have the answers right away. And sometimes, we’re figuring it out just like you are."
Maya shifted, looking up at him. "So you don’t know him either?"
Felix gave her a small, honest smile. "Not really, no." 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚
Nobody said anything—what they’d just talked about hung heavy in the air. Felix, sensing the need to lift their spirits, clapped his hands together.
"Hey, who misses Mommy?" he asked with a grin.
Maya’s face lit up. "Me!"
"Me too!" Nathan chimed in.
Felix pulled out his phone. "How about we call her?"
He dialed Katherine’s number, switching to video call. The phone rang once, twice, three times, but there was no answer.
Nathan frowned. "Maybe she’s sleeping."
Felix glanced at the time, noting it was still early. Felix’s brow furrowed slightly as he tried to recall the last time they’d spoken about the schedule.
Then it clicked. Dinner. "She might be busy. Let’s just try again later."
He paused, then smiled. "In the meantime, how about we take a photo and send it to her?"
The twins nodded eagerly, positioning themselves on either side of Felix and wrapping their arms around him. He held up the phone, capturing their beaming faces in a snapshot of pure joy.
Felix typed out a message to accompany the photo:
We miss you so much and are always thinking about you. Especially me.
He hit send, and the photo and message were on their way to Katherine.
As the twins nestled against him, their earlier questions momentarily forgotten, Felix gazed at the photo on his screen. He hoped that, wherever Katherine was, the image would bring a smile to her face and remind her of the love waiting for her at home.
Still, Felix wasn’t sure why he suddenly felt so uneasy.
