My Billionaire Ex Beg For A Second Chance-Chapter 54: A Promise For Sunday
The office was quiet, as usual, but something was different about Katherine today.
She sat at her desk, her fingers lightly resting on her keyboard, her screen displaying the same blank document that had been open for over ten minutes. Her eyes, unfocused and distant, remained glued to the center of the screen, but her thoughts were miles away.
Nathan’s voice echoed in her head like a question left hanging in an empty room.
"How come we don’t have a dad?"
It hadn’t just been a question—it was the beginning of something. The beginning of awareness, of understanding. It was the kind of question children only asked once they’d started noticing the differences between themselves and others.
And for so long, she had done everything to keep them from asking it.
Katherine inhaled slowly, trying not to let the ache in her chest grow deeper. That had been the first time either of the twins had asked about their father. Not even Maya, with her boundless curiosity, had brought it up until now. Katherine had taken pride in the fact that they’d never seemed to notice—or at least, never voiced it.
She had worked so hard to fill every gap. She played dress-up, attended parent-teacher meetings, helped build paper robots, and anything else so they would feel more "complete."
But was it ever enough?
"It’s easy to lie to them,"
"To say he’s already in heaven, or working somewhere far away..."
The thoughts circled in her mind like vultures.
But she had never been able to bring herself to lie to them, not even little white lies. She never wanted to plant false hope or give them an illusion they’d cling to. Still, what was she supposed to say?
That their father abandoned her?
That he never once came looking and he left her with two hearts to raise on her own?
No.
That wasn’t something she could ever let herself say, not to their innocent faces.
She exhaled sharply, pressing her palm to her forehead and leaning her elbow against the desk. She closed her eyes.
And then—
Fffuuuhhh.
A sudden puff of warm air hit her ear, making her jerk upright in her chair with a soft yelp.
Her hand flew to her ear as she turned sharply.
Felix stood beside her desk, one hand on the divider, looking utterly pleased with himself.
"What in the world—" Katherine blinked at him in disbelief. "Did you just blow on my ear?"
Felix burst out laughing, completely unapologetic. "Yes, and your face was absolutely worth it."
Katherine stared at him, her eyes wide as she touched her ear again, still flustered. "Mr. Crawford," she began with exaggerated calm, "I believe we agreed we can’t prank each other during work hours."
Felix held up both hands, surrendering. "I know, I know. But in my defense, that was hardly a prank. Let’s just call it... a reality check procedure."
She narrowed her eyes at him, half-trying to look stern and half-failing. "A what?"
"You looked like you were watching your soul float away," he said, walking around her desk now and leaning casually against the edge. "I just needed to see if you were still with us."
"Well, congratulations. I’m very much here now," she muttered, still a little stunned, her ears now suspiciously warm.
Felix chuckled, tilting his head. "But seriously, what were you thinking about so hard? The work? Or... something with the twins?"
Katherine’s gaze flickered to her keyboard for a moment. "No, nothing like that," she said lightly, reaching for her mouse to move it just to do something. "Just... dazing off. You know. Human."
Felix didn’t press, though she could feel his eyes on her. Watching, waiting.
Instead, he leaned back slightly and gave her a crooked grin. "Well, I suppose it’s nice to know you’re not secretly an android."
She scoffed under her breath, reaching for her glass. But even as she sipped, she couldn’t help but think how strange it was—that something so silly as him blowing air into her ear had sent her heart thudding like that. Her body had reacted before her brain caught up.
Why is it suddenly hot in here?
She quickly shook the thought from her head and cleared her throat. "So? What brings you over to my desk, Mr. Crawford? You can’t possibly have come all this way just to blow on my ear."
"Ah! Right," Felix said, snapping his fingers. "I got distracted."
He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. His thumb danced across the screen—tap, scroll, tap—before he turned the device toward her and held it out.
Katherine took it, brows drawing together in confusion.
On the screen was an email confirmation. A bright logo of WonderDome Amusement Park filled the top, followed by four glowing lines of text.

She blinked. "Don’t tell me—"
"Yes," Felix said before she could even finish, his smile widening. "I managed to grab them.. So..." He spread his arms. "Get ready for an amazing Sunday adventure."
"You really did it?" Katherine stared at the screen again. "You’re actually taking them?"
"Of course I am!" Felix said, feigning offense. "What do you take me for? A liar? A tease?"
"The twins will be so happy." Katherine smiled, genuinely now.
Felix looked at her, and something in his smile softened. "Yeah... finally, the four of us can go out together again."
Katherine’s smile paused for a moment, her eyes searching his face. There was something quiet and shy in the way he said that—"the four of us"—like he’d been waiting to say it for a long time.
She didn’t respond immediately. Just looked at him.
He smiled again, this time with a small blush dusting his cheeks, and rubbed the back of his neck.
Katherine lowered her eyes, her smile returning—gentler now, but deeper. She turned back to her screen, but her fingers didn’t move.
Not yet.
She was still thinking about the amusement park.
Still thinking about Felix’s words.
And still thinking—maybe—just maybe—this could be enough.
At least for now.
