Chapter 226: A Secret They Weren’t Supposed to See

Katherine unlocked the door with a soft sigh, the familiar click of the latch sounding louder than usual in the quiet hallway. It was late, much later than she intended to be home, and though her body felt heavy from the long day, her heart was oddly light. The reason, of course, was walking right behind her.

Felix.

His tie was undone, the top buttons of his shirt loose, and his hair slightly tousled from running his hands through it earlier. He looked relaxed, almost boyishly smug, in a way that made her both roll her eyes and want to smile.

"Home sweet home," he murmured, his voice low and teasing as he stepped in after her.

Katherine shook her head, setting her bag down on the small table near the entryway. "You sound like you own the place."

"Give me time," he replied easily, lips quirking upward as he slipped his hands into his pockets.

She ignored him, or at least tried to. Her attention shifted to the living room, where Jazz was just gathering her things. She straightened when she saw Katherine, offering a warm smile.

"You’re back," Jazz said softly. "The twins just fell asleep not even ten minutes ago."

Relief loosened the knot in Katherine’s shoulders. She hated making Jazz stay so late, but she couldn’t help it tonight. "I’m sorry for keeping you this long," Katherine apologized sincerely, stepping closer. "I know it’s much later than usual."

Jazz waved her off with an easy laugh. "Don’t worry about it. I figured you must be busy. And besides..." Her gaze flickered briefly to Felix, who stood just behind Katherine, tall and impossibly composed. "...it looks like you had company."

Katherine flushed, immediately brushing her hair back as though that small gesture could hide her embarrassment. "It’s not-"

But Felix interrupted smoothly. "Thank you for looking after the twins. Katherine would be lost without you."

Jazz blinked, momentarily startled by his effortless charm, before nodding. "Oh-well, it’s no problem at all." She gave Katherine a knowing smile that made Katherine’s cheeks burn even hotter. With a little wave, Jazz slipped her bag over her shoulder. "I’ll see you tomorrow."

When the door closed behind her, Katherine exhaled, muttering under her breath, "You didn’t have to say that."

Felix only shrugged, stepping closer. "What? It’s true."

She gave him a look, but before she could argue, his hand was already brushing against her hair, fingers tucking a stray strand neatly behind her ear. His touch was casual but lingering, his thumb grazing the curve of her cheekbone before he leaned in to press a kiss against her temple.

"Felix," she hissed softly, glancing toward the hallway where the twins’ bedroom was. "Not here."

"What?" His brows arched, the picture of innocence. "I can’t greet you properly in your own home?"

"You call this proper?" she shot back, trying not to smile.

"Yes." His lips curved as he slid his hand down, slowly intertwining their fingers. "This is very proper."

She swatted lightly at his arm but didn’t pull her hand back. He was clingier than usual tonight, like a cat that refused to let go. While she moved toward the dining table to sort through the twins’ school things, small pencil cases, sketchbooks, the latest math worksheet Nathan had proudly insisted she sign, Felix shadowed her every step. Every time she bent down, he leaned close. Every time she straightened, he found some excuse to touch her, whether it was brushing invisible lint off her shoulder or casually resting his palm against the small of her back.

Katherine tried to keep a straight face, but her lips kept twitching. "You’re impossible tonight."

"I’m always impossible," he reminded her, leaning so close his breath stirred her hair. "You just don’t want to admit you like it."

She turned her head slightly, giving him a pointed look. "What if the twins wake up and catch us like this? Do you have any idea how many questions I’d have to answer?"

"They’ll survive," Felix replied, unbothered.

"Felix," she warned, narrowing her eyes. "I mean it."

He tilted his head, considering her. Then, with a grin, he said, "Then just tell them."

Her eyes widened. "What?"

"Tell them," he repeated, as though it were the simplest thing in the world. "Tell them about us."

Katherine let out a sharp laugh, trying to mask the nervous flutter in her chest. "And what if they hate the idea of us being together?"

Felix leaned in closer, his confidence radiating in every line of his face. His eyes glinted in the dim light of the room, a slow, devastating smile curving his lips.

"That’s not going to happen." He lowered his voice, almost conspiratorial. "Even their mother couldn’t resist me, so how could they?"

Heat flared in her cheeks. "You’re unbelievable."

"True." He didn’t back down. In fact, his hand slipped around her waist, tugging her flush against him before she could protest. "But you love that about me."

Katherine scoffed, attempting to look unimpressed even as her heart hammered inside her chest. "You’re so full of yourself."

"And yet," Felix murmured, bending his head, "you’re still here."

Before she could summon a retort, his lips were on hers. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

The kiss started slow, teasing, but Felix wasn’t the type to leave things half-done. His grip tightened on her waist, pulling her closer, and she felt herself melt despite every warning bell in her head. The exhaustion of the day faded, replaced by the intoxicating warmth of him, the faint smell of his cologne, the solid weight of his chest pressed to hers, the way his mouth claimed hers like he had every right to.

Katherine tried to tell herself to stop, that this was reckless, that the twins could wake at any moment. But the way Felix kissed her made rational thought slip further and further away. Her fingers curled against his shirt, clutching him without meaning to, and when he deepened the kiss, she let him.

A shadow shifted near the corner, two smaller figures half-hidden by the wall.

Katherine finally pulled away, breathless. She pressed her palm against Felix’s chest, trying to gather her composure.

"See?" he whispered against her ear, his tone smug but soft. "Not so bad, is it?"

Katherine rolled her eyes, desperately trying to calm her racing heartbeat. "You’re insufferable."

"And you’re adorable when you’re flustered."

She groaned, covering her face with her hands, but a small laugh escaped her anyway.

Neither of them noticed that behind the wall, two pairs of eyes remained locked on them.
