My Billionaire Ex Beg For A Second Chance-Chapter 148: Thinking About Another Man
Katherine didn’t even remember how she managed to get through the rest of the workday. The office had never felt so cold, the walls never so suffocating. She did her tasks mechanically, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the two women she overheard at the vending machine.
"Kiss him right there in front of everyone."
"She must be his girlfriend."
Felix? Her Felix?
She frowned at the very thought. She had no claim to him—she knew that. But the ache in her chest, the way her hands trembled slightly when she shuffled her papers, told her otherwise. It was all too confusing. The shift in his behavior, the woman showing up at the office twice, the way he suddenly bailed last night without a real explanation. And now, today, he called to say he wouldn’t be in. She believed him—of course she did—but it all stacked up, and her heart couldn’t ignore the growing sense of being left out.
By the time she arrived home, the twilight sky was painted in dull shades of lavender and gray. The twins were in her room, sitting on the rug, trying to build something with colorful blocks and chattering with each other. Their sweet, familiar voices grounded her just enough to keep herself from falling apart.
Then the doorbell rang.
Katherine startled and immediately got up, smoothing her blouse and walking to the door with a flicker of anticipation rushing through her chest.
She opened it. "Felix, I—"
But her voice halted mid-sentence.
It wasn’t Felix. It was Leonard.
"Well, sorry for disappointing you," he said with a half-smile, holding up two takeout bags in one hand.
Katherine blinked, caught off guard. "Oh, you. Sorry about that. I thought you... Well, never mind," she said weakly.
Leonard raised a brow. "Really? Could’ve fooled me. You didn’t even bother to hide it."
Katherine crossed her arms, stepping aside to let him in. "Is there something I can help you with?"
"I come bearing dinner," he said simply. "And I thought I’d visit the twins... and you."
She sighed and opened the door fully. "Come in."
As Leonard stepped inside, Katherine muttered to herself, Since when did it become normal for him to just drop by like this?
She watched as he removed his shoes and walked straight to the dining table like he belonged there. A small part of her wanted to feel annoyed at the familiarity, but instead, all she felt was numb exhaustion. At least he doesn’t know the passcode. Yet, she thought bitterly, then shook the thought away. You’re spiraling, Katherine.
The twins ran out of her room at the smell of food and cheered when they saw Leonard. He greeted them with a grin and bent down to hug them both, letting Nathan hang on his shoulder like a koala while Maya babbled about her favorite cartoon.
They all sat for dinner a little later, the food warm and comforting—but Katherine’s appetite was nowhere to be found. She picked at her rice, stirred her soup, then spooned a single bite into her mouth.
Leonard noticed immediately.
"Isn’t it nice if we could have dinner together like this every day?" he asked, smiling warmly.
Nathan and Maya eagerly agreed with wide smiles and sparkling eyes.
Katherine? She said nothing. Her spoon clinked gently against her bowl as she swirled the broth in circles again.
Leonard tilted his head, eyeing her. "You’ve been stirring that soup for five minutes."
She blinked and looked up. "What?"
"You okay?"
"Yeah. Just... tired," she answered with a tight smile, her eyes drifting away again.
Leonard didn’t press further at the table. But she could feel his gaze linger every few minutes. Watching her. Studying her. Seeing through her cracks.
Later, after the twins were settled in with their books and toys, Katherine and Leonard stood side by side at the kitchen sink, washing the dishes together. The hum of water running and clinking plates filled the silence between them.
"You’re in a pretty bad mood tonight," Leonard said, his voice low and casual as he rinsed a bowl.
She handed him another plate. "Since when do you think you can read my mood?"
He smirked. "I don’t think. I just know."
Katherine didn’t respond. Her lips pressed into a tight line as she dried her hands on a towel.
Leonard leaned slightly closer. "Don’t tell me it’s because of Felix."
She stayed silent.
"I’ll take that as a yes."
Still, she said nothing.
He let the quiet stretch before adding, "I hope it’s about work."
Katherine dried a plate with more force than necessary. "It’s nothing, Leonard. Just... overthinking."
He leaned in until his breath ghosted against her ear.
"But whatever it is... the thought of you thinking about another man this much—it’s unbearable."
Katherine froze. Her hand stilled mid-motion, still clutching a damp plate.
She turned slowly, her eyes meeting his—deep, steady, and unreadable.
"Leonard," she whispered, her voice wavering slightly.
Katherine drew in a sharp breath, her pulse loud in her ears.
"Please," she said, barely above a whisper. "You’re... too close."
For a beat, Leonard didn’t move. His expression didn’t change, but something in his eyes flickered—like a candle caught in a gust of wind.
Then, slowly, he pulled back. He straightened, the space between them expanding again, but the tension remained. His presence lingered like static in the air. 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞
Katherine set the plate down in the rack, her hands now slightly trembling.
"I would appreciate it," she said, keeping her gaze on the sink, "if you didn’t do that again."
Leonard was silent. She could feel him behind her, weighing her words, her tone, her meaning.
"I wasn’t trying to make you uncomfortable," he said after a pause. His voice was quiet—lower, more guarded than usual. "But I understand."
He didn’t say anything more. Just gave her a look that lingered far too long before returning to drying dishes like nothing had happened.
But the moment was already carved into the air—suspended between them, heavy with meaning.
And Katherine couldn’t ignore the sharp thrum of confusion in her chest.
She wasn’t just overthinking.
She was unraveling.
