Chapter 114: Little Chaos

Katherine’s heart skipped a beat at the sound of the doorbell. Tonight was supposed to be a simple, intimate dinner with Felix—just the two of them—after a busy and chaos days.

When she opened the door, Irene practically barreled in, arms wide."I knew it," Irene whispered conspiratorially, dropping her voice. "Tonight isn’t ’just a dinner,’ is it?" She winked, pulling out a compact. "Big night, Kath."

Katherine reached out, returning the embrace gently."Irene, it’s—it’s not that," she murmured, though the tension in her chest betrayed her.

Katherine closed the door behind Irene, who was already halfway to the kitchen as if she owned the place—laughing, tossing her coat over a chair. But Katherine barely heard her.

She leaned against the door for a second, just long enough to catch her breath. Her fingers lingered on the edge of her dress, smoothing it down. It was a soft navy silk, something she hadn’t worn in years—something she had considered too elegant for just dinner.

But Felix had asked.

Wear something beautiful. Just for me.

She’d stared blankly than she cared to admit that time. They hadn’t been flirtatious, not exactly. Not obvious. But there was something behind them.

Irene lifted a brow."Well, it’s just dinner with a friend, right?" she teased. "You don’t get glammed up for that."

Before Katherine could protest, Irene stepped forward and took her hand, spinning her gently in place like a dancer. The hem of the dress swirled around her knees, catching the light.

"Oh, look at you," Irene said, eyes wide with mock-dramatic awe. "I could cry. You didn’t even need me to do your makeup this time. When did you get this good?" She gave Katherine a playful shove on the shoulder. "I’m so proud I could burst."

Katherine laughed, cheeks coloring. "Irene..."

"I mean it!" Irene cut in, setting the wine on the counter and clasping both of Katherine’s hands. "You look absolutely gorgeous. The hair, the dress, that lip—it’s all perfect. And you did it all yourself."

A soft laugh escaped Katherine."Maybe not," she admitted.

compliment landed somewhere deeper than it should have, tugging at something tender.

"I just wanted to feel nice tonight," she murmured.

"Mission accomplished." Irene squeezed her hand. "Felix won’t know what hit him."

Before Katherine could respond, the twins burst into the hallway—Maya and Nathan, bundled in their pajamas. They launched into Irene with affectionate abandon.

"Auntie Irene!" they cried in chorus, tugging at her arms.

Irene’s expression melted into delight as she scooped them up."Ready for Auntie’s special night?" she asked, swirling them around.

"Yay!" they shouted, hugging Irene back.

Katherine exhaled, choosing not to intervene. Irene’s presence already intensified the evening.

"You’re amazing," Irene said proudly. "Now, when that bell rings again, you’ll be ready."

Katherine offered a small nod, trying to steel herself. "Thank you."

Irene was already checking her phone when the doorbell sounded again. She paused and glanced at Katherine. "That must be Felix," she said, practically bouncing on her toes. "I’ll go get that."

Her voice carried a lighthearted energy as she made her way to the door, but before Katherine could process the next moment, Irene swung it open with a wide, bright smile, expecting to see Felix.

But the sight that greeted her was far from expected.

Standing on the doorstep was none other than Leonard. His eyebrows shot up in surprise when he saw Irene standing there. It was clear neither of them had been anticipating the other.

The moment stretched for a beat too long.

Irene’s eyes widened in shock, her face contorting in a mixture of confusion and irritation. Then, without any warning, she let out a sharp, incredulous scream.

"What the freak are you doing here?!"

Her finger shot out toward Leonard, pointing at him like a weapon. Her voice was a sharp edge, betraying her surprise and mounting anger all at once.

Katherine’s heart skipped a beat as she hurried toward the door, her mind racing. Of course.

"Irene," she began cautiously, her hand reaching out, "Just—"

But Irene whipped around, cutting her off. "Back off, Katherine!" she snapped, her eyes blazing. "I’ll handle this one."

Leonard, ever the picture of awkward politeness, tried to salvage the moment. He flashed a tight, uncomfortable smile. "Hi, Irene. Long time no see."

Katherine froze in place, her pulse quickening as Irene’s glare intensified.

"Irene, please—" Katherine started, but Irene wasn’t hearing any of it.

"No, no, no," Irene seethed, her voice low with simmering frustration. "You don’t want to be here, Leonard. You better—"

But the twins, who had been standing just behind Irene, suddenly ran forward, their voices breaking through the tension. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺

"Hi, Uncle Leonard!" Maya chirped, beaming up at him.

Nathan echoed his sister, grinning widely. "Yeah, hi!"

Irene blinked, clearly thrown off. She looked at Katherine, eyes wide with disbelief.

Katherine could only offer a sheepish smile, her mind racing for some explanation. "It’s a long story," she said, her voice low and apologetic.

Irene raised an eyebrow, her disbelief giving way to a certain dread. "Make it short," she shot back. "Because I’m not letting this man into your house without a damn good reason."

Katherine opened her mouth, she was about to speak when Felix’s voice cut through the tension like a knife, casual and unfazed.

"Okay, wow," Felix said, his head peeking around the corner, eyes scanning the room in mild surprise. "Katherine sure got so many guests tonight."

Katherine’s heart sank. Her stomach twisted in knots as she turned to face him, and for a moment, all she could do was stare. Felix had a look of bemusement on his face, trying to make sense of the gathering he’d just stumbled into. His gaze flicked first to Leonard, then to Irene, then back to Katherine, who now felt more exposed than ever.

Katherine opened her mouth again, but her breath caught in her throat. She tried to pull herself together, to find some way to make it all make sense, but it felt impossible.
