Chapter 104: Always Open

Felix stepped into Katherine’s apartment and was instantly tackled by two sets of arms.

"Uncle Felix!" Maya squealed, gripping his legs. Nathan echoed her excitement, already pulling him toward the living room.

"Whoa—easy, tigers," Felix laughed, ruffling Nathan’s hair as he walked further inside.

From the kitchen, Katherine turned to glance over her shoulder. "You’re early," she said, smiling—but Felix saw the crack in her expression, a flicker of stress just behind her eyes.

"Didn’t want to miss the famous Katherine Anderson breakfast," he quipped, casually setting his bag down. "Smells like steak and eggs. Am I right?"

"Close," Katherine chuckled, brushing her hair behind her ear as she flipped something in the pan. "It’s just scrambled eggs, toast, and those little sausages you like."

He smiled, stepping next to her and picking up a plate. "You make them taste like magic. Let me help."

They moved easily around each other, the domestic rhythm surprisingly natural. The twins were still in the living room, humming while organizing some books on the carpet.

"You’re quiet today," Felix said softly as he handed her the pepper grinder.

"So are you," Katherine replied without looking at him.

Felix didn’t push. But he noticed the subtle tension in her shoulders, the way her jaw clenched whenever her eyes flicked toward the hallway.

Soon, the dining table was set, and the four of them sat down together. The scent of warm bread and sausage filled the room, and Maya clasped her hands together.

"Wait," she said. "Isn’t Uncle Leonard eating with us too?"

Katherine’s hand froze, fork halfway to her mouth. Felix caught the sudden drop in her gaze. Before she could speak, Felix cleared his throat.

"Actually," he said lightly, "I ran into him in the lobby earlier. He left early for the office. Probably drowning in paperwork already."

Nathan tilted his head. "So early?"

"Guess he’s got a lot on his plate," Felix said, giving Katherine a knowing look. She responded with a quiet, grateful nod.

"Okay," Maya said brightly. "Let’s dig in!"

As the meal continued, Felix asked in a teasing tone, "So, are you both excited Uncle Leonard lives in the same building now?"

As the twins perked up at the question, Felix kept his tone light, but underneath, he was paying close attention. He hadn’t just asked to fill the silence—he genuinely wanted to know. Leonard moving into the building felt too convenient, too sudden.

Nathan and Maya exchanged glances, then nodded enthusiastically.

"Yeah!" Maya said. "Now we can play together more!"

Felix smiled, but his thoughts stayed sharp. Were they actually happy? Were they just being polite? Kids were good at picking up on tension, even when no one talked about it.

He glanced at Katherine—she was smiling, but it didn’t quite reach her eyes.

Felix’s smile faltered for a split second, but he recovered fast. "Oh? So you like him better than me now?"

The twins both gasped. "Noooo!" Nathan said dramatically. "We like you the same!"

Maya shook her head. "Yeah, same same! You’re both cool."

Felix laughed and tapped the tip of Maya’s nose. "Whew. That’s a relief. I was getting worried there."

The laughter at the table felt warm, but Katherine could see the flicker of something deeper in Felix’s eyes. Even in humor, he was paying attention to everything.

Later, after breakfast was done and dishes were rinsed, the four of them stepped out of the apartment together. The twins were already walking a few steps ahead, playfully racing each other down the hall.

Katherine and Felix lingered behind. Their footsteps were slower, more thoughtful. Felix’s eyes drifted—just for a second—toward Leonard’s door. He caught himself staring and looked away quickly, hoping Katherine didn’t notice.

He hated to admit it, even to himself, but part of him—some reckless, possessive part—wished he’d thought of it first. Moving into the building. Being closer. Being there for her, without excuse or distance.

Leonard had beaten him to it.

"You’re handling it well," Felix murmured, glancing at the twins.

Katherine hummed in agreement, arms crossed over her chest. "I have to. I can’t act like it’s the end of the world."

He tilted his head. "But is it?"

Katherine sighed, keeping her voice low. "What do you expect me to do, Felix? Move out? Pack up the kids and run away?"

Felix looked at her, not with mockery, but with softness. "My house is always open, you know. Spare rooms. Big yard."

Katherine let out a sharp laugh, one hand rising to cover her mouth. "Oh sure, Felix. I’ll just show up on your doorstep with two kids and a trunk full of emotional baggage."

Felix grinned. "Sounds like a party. I’ll throw in a casserole and a bottle of wine."

Katherine rolled her eyes and lightly smacked his arm. "Oh, come on, you."

"I’m serious," he said, his tone soft but steady. "I mean he moved in right across from you like it’s normal. I think it’s okay for me to worry." 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

"I know," she muttered. "Believe me. I know."

They walked in silence for a few seconds.

Katherine finally said, "Let’s just hope he doesn’t do anything funny."

Felix grinned, not smug, but protectively. "Don’t worry. Even if he does, I’ll stop him."

Their eyes met, and Katherine gave him a small, genuine smile. As they walked toward the elevator, Felix kept a calm face, but inside, his thoughts churned with a quiet intensity.

He glanced at the twins, their small backs turned, waiting patiently. Katherine stepped ahead to join them, her hand briefly brushing his arm as she passed. It was nothing. But it reminded him why he cared so much.

She didn’t know it, not really, but he’d already drawn the line in his mind. If it came to it—if she ever needed to get out fast, if things got worse—he would step in.

He wasn’t just trying to make her feel better—he meant what he said. If her husband pulled anything, anything at all, Felix wouldn’t stand by.
