My Antique Mirror Is A Portal To Another World-Chapter 517: Suspect
A shiver ran down the captain’s spine at Wen Kang’s questions. Swallowing hard, he immediately ordered, "You guys, drag them all out!"
"Yes, Captain." The imperial guards responded in unison.
As the imperial guards dragged the palace maidservants and eunuchs away, the captain personally seized the chief eunuch and dragged him out as well.
Reaching toward Wen Qiaolun, the chief eunuch struggled desperately. "Empress Dowager, please save this servant! Empress Dowager—!"
Hearing this, Wen Qiaolun covered her ears and curled up, shrinking herself as much as possible.
Bam!
The door slammed shut before the chief eunuch could finish his words. Before long, the palace maidservants and eunuchs’ screams came from the outside.
Smack! Smack! Smack!
"Ah!"
"Please save me, Empress Dowager!"
The sounds of flesh being struck, blood splattering, and agonized screams echoed throughout Yongping Palace.
As she listened to the sounds, Wen Qiaolun trembled uncontrollably. As she endured the pain all over her body, cold sweat soaked her back and forehead.
’What happened last night? Why is the Elder Brother so furious that he even killed the chief eunuch?’ Wen Qiaolun thought in panic.
When the screams outside finally faded, Wen Kang turned away from the closed door. His gaze fell coldly on Wen Qiaolun’s trembling body.
"Younger Sister," he asked flatly, "do you know your mistake?"
Forcing herself up, Wen Qiaolun knelt before him. "El—Elder Brother, please forgive me. I–I truly didn’t know anything."
Wen Kang sneered at her words. "Very well."
Listening to his cold voice, Wen Qiaolun flinched.
Terrified that he would strike her again, Wen Qiaolun hurriedly grabbed his legs. "Elder Brother, I know I was wrong. Please—if you want to punish me, at least tell me what I did wrong."
Wen Kang stared at her for a long moment before turning away. Walking to a stool, he sat down, poured himself a cup of warm tea, and then took a sip.
After a long moment of silence, he finally said, "Last night, a group of assassins infiltrated the residences of Wen Clan members and slaughtered all our male descendants. Not only the main and side branches, even our distant relatives were not spared."
The moment she heard this, all color drained from Wen Qiaolun’s face. She crawled toward Wen Kang and clutched the hem of his robes.
"Elder Brother... you must be joking, right?" she asked as expectation flickered in her eyes.
Hearing this, Wen Kang snorted coldly. "Do you think I would joke about this? Don’t you understand how important those male descendants were to our plans?"
Seeing his cold expression, Wen Qiaolun finally grasped the gravity of the situation. She collapsed onto the floor, her face ashen.
"How... How could this happen? This is impossible..."
Wen Kang stared at her silently, his thoughts racing. ’Since Qiaolun knew nothing, then the culprit must not be from the Zhou Empire. Other than the Zhou Emperor, who would have such capability?’
Breaking the silence, Wen Qiaolun asked fearfully, "Elder Brother, do you know who did this to our Wen Clan?"
Wen Kang shook his head. "I have already sent people to investigate, but there are no leads so far."
After a moment of pause, he asked, "Qiaolun, do you have any suspects?"
Wen Qiaolun thought for a moment before replying, "Other than the Jin Emperor, I can’t think of anyone."
Slowly tapping his index finger against the table, Wen Kang muttered, "The Jin Emperor... Does he really have the time?"
Confused by his words, Wen Qiaolun asked, "Elder Brother, what do you mean by that?"
Glancing at her, Wen Kang explained calmly, "Feng Xiyan captured the Jin Empire’s Second Imperial Prince, Seventh Imperial Princess, and their Imperial Teacher."
"The Jin Emperor has dispatched three hundred thousand troops, led by their War God Wu Ruizhan, to rescue them. With the war underway, he wouldn’t have the leisure to target us."
After pondering the information, Wen Qiaolun spoke again, "If neither the Jin nor Zhou Empires is likely the culprit, could it be someone from within the imperial court?"
At her words, Wen Kang’s eyes flickered. His hands clenched the teacup as he muttered, "It must be him."
"Who?" Wen Qiaolun asked curiously.
Wen Kang replied through gritted teeth, "The Prince Regent, Yu Zhao."
Wen Qiaolun’s already pale face turned ghostly white at his answer.
She shook her head violently and said, "Impossible! The Prince Regent has no real power or political influence. With his sickly body, we don’t even know how much longer he will live. He might even die in a few days."
Listening to her words, Wen Kang frowned slightly.
After a brief silence, he said, "I will investigate this thoroughly. In the meantime, make sure you control your stupid son. Do not let him act rashly and cause trouble."
"Yes, Elder Brother," Wen Qiaolun replied fearfully.
Glancing at her bruised face, Wen Kang stood up. "Summon an imperial physician. I don’t want to see these injuries the next time I come."
"Yes, Elder Brother." Wen Qiaolun replied obediently.
After giving her one more warning look, Wen Kang left Yong Ping Palace.
Left alone, Wen Qiaolun collapsed to the ground and finally let out a shaky breath. Clenching her fists, hatred burned in her eyes.
’If I find the culprit behind all of this, I will tear him apart piece by piece to repay today’s humiliation and pain!’
While the imperial capital city of the Yu Empire was shrouded by fear and tension, far away in Xiqiang City, the servants of the Great General’s mansion were just beginning their day.
As they bustled about their duties, Bai Hanyun slowly woke from her dreamless sleep.
Sitting up on the bed, Bai Hanyun let out a long yawn and groped around for her phone. Just as she unlocked the screen to check the time, a notification sounded.
Ding!
Blinking away the remnants of sleep, she opened WeChat and saw a message from Li Dagou.
