My Amnesic Ex Married My Sister, So I Married His Uncle-Chapter 99: If it Hurts, Bite Me
Yolanda Thorne, sitting to the side, was restless with worry. She had no idea that the first thing on her son’s mind, now that his memory had suddenly returned, was how to steal Owen Rhodes’s girl.
Yolanda Thorne’s mind was consumed with what-ifs. What if her son had injured his brain again? What if there were lasting complications?
Her brows knitted, she repeatedly urged the driver to go faster, then incessantly asked the paramedics about Ethan Rhodes’s condition.
Even though she received the same answer every time, she was too anxious to stop asking.
Fifteen minutes later, the ambulance pulled up to the emergency entrance of Oakhaven Hospital. Doctors and nurses, who had been waiting, swiftly wheeled Ethan Rhodes into the emergency room, while the hospital’s vice president stayed by Yolanda Thorne’s side to comfort her.
Meanwhile, the black Ghost rolling down the road was exceptionally quiet inside.
Stella Sterling had just been crying. Her almond-shaped eyes were glistening as if freshly rained upon, yet her gaze was vacant as she stared out the window.
She didn’t speak, and Owen Rhodes didn’t initiate conversation either. He simply stared at her profile, his eyes dark and gloomy.
His hands, resting on his lap, were clenched into fists, the blue veins on their backs starkly prominent.
A voice inside him was screaming.
’Hide her away. Hide her where no one can find her, and then she can’t be stolen from me.’
’She said she liked me. How could she abandon me now?’
’If I had never had her, I surely wouldn’t be this greedy.’
But when he caught a glimpse of the reddened corners of her eyes, the voice suddenly quieted.
She was crying for Ethan Rhodes.
She was worried about Ethan Rhodes.
How could the one month he’d been with Stella possibly compete with the more than twenty years she had spent with Ethan Rhodes?
He was conflicted, and cowardly.
He wanted Stella to speak, yet at the same time, he didn’t.
The atmosphere in the car was suffocatingly tense. Even the sound of the tires rolling over the asphalt felt grating.
Stella didn’t snap out of her chaotic thoughts until the car came to a stop.
Owen Rhodes opened the door on her side and reached out to help her, murmuring, "Slowly, be careful."
Although Stella wanted to say it wasn’t that serious, she saw Owen’s grave expression and obediently placed her uninjured right hand in his, getting out of the car.
Liam Hawthorne had contacted the hospital earlier.
The vice president, who had just finished comforting Yolanda Thorne, now hurried over to receive Owen Rhodes.
The vice president had already arranged for a female ER doctor to be on standby in the VIP consultation room. As soon as he met Owen, he quickly led them toward it.
Audrey Rhodes’s car arrived just moments after Owen’s. As soon as Faye Rhodes got out, she jogged over to the couple ahead.
Faye ran to Stella’s side and asked worriedly, "Aunt Stella, are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere else besides your arm?"
Stella looked listless, but she managed a weak smile and shook her head. "The rest of me is fine. Faye, why are you here too?"
"I was worried about you! Aunt Stella, how did you suddenly fall down the stairs?" Faye secretly glanced at Owen, who was standing beside them. "Weren’t you talking with Kiana Sterling?"
Stella opened her mouth, but the words wouldn’t come out. She felt too weak to speak.
Before anything more could be said, they had reached the door of the VIP consultation room.
Owen Rhodes let go of her hand and said in a low voice, "Go get it checked out. I’ll wait for you out here."
Stella nodded and silently followed the doctor into the room.
Outside the door, only Owen Rhodes and Faye Rhodes remained.
Faye wasn’t actually very close to Owen.
Although her mother, Audrey Rhodes, was on good terms with Owen, Faye was from a younger generation, and Owen was so busy that they rarely had a chance to meet.
Plus, Owen always wore a stern, all-business expression. He was a man of few words, and when he did speak, his tone was icy. To be honest, she was quite afraid of him.
And now, Owen’s expression was even darker.
For a moment, she didn’t dare to speak, only sneaking occasional glances at the tall, gloomy man beside her.
In the end, it was Owen who spoke first. "What is it you want to say?"
Faye’s eyes widened as if startled, and she instinctively pressed her lips together.
She looked up and saw Owen’s brow deeply furrowed. It was as if he would crush her between his eyebrows if she didn’t speak up immediately.
She hastily told him everything she had seen, along with all the utter nonsense Kiana had been spouting.
As she got into it, Faye couldn’t help but let her own feelings show, her voice filled with righteous indignation.
"I see," Owen responded, his face cold.
Then he added a warning, "Just act like you don’t know anything."
Faye didn’t understand why, but she nodded obediently.
Her mom had told her to listen to whatever Owen said.
What Faye had seen could help Stella, but to be honest, not by much.
The area by the wine cellar was a blind spot for the security cameras because it wasn’t near an entrance or exit.
Faye hadn’t been there from the beginning either. It was a case of he-said, she-said, and Kiana could spin the story however she wanted.
However, to the current Owen, all of this was trivial.
The only thing that truly mattered was what Stella was thinking.
He irritably raked a hand through his hair, brushing back the strands that had fallen onto his forehead. His gaze grew even more somber.
Faye could clearly sense his foul mood. She could only try to keep her distance and breathe more quietly, doing her best to fade into the background.
A few minutes later, the door to the consultation room opened.
The heavy atmosphere that had filled the hallway finally dissipated when the doctor appeared.
Faye hurried back over. "Doctor, how’s my aunt?"
"The bones are fine. Her arm is dislocated, and she has some soft tissue contusions, but there are no other major issues. Please wait a moment; an orthopedic specialist will be here shortly to perform a manual reduction." 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Owen nodded in understanding, then went into the room with Faye to keep Stella company.
Faye keenly observed that from the moment Owen entered, his eyes never left Stella, his expression a mixture of worry and restraint.
Stella had recovered a bit by now and looked to be in better spirits than when she’d first arrived at the hospital.
Faye’s eyes darted around, and then she spoke up. "Aunt Stella, how are you feeling? Uncle Owen has been worried sick!"
At her words, Stella finally focused her attention on Owen.
She looked at him for a moment and suddenly realized that his brow had been furrowed ever since she fell down the stairs.
Owen was standing right beside her. Stella reached out and took his hand, which was hanging at his side. "I’m sorry for making you worry."
The unhappiness in Owen’s heart inexplicably dissipated.
He squeezed her hand in return. "There’s nothing to apologize for. As long as you’re okay."
"Did I ruin the family banquet?" Stella asked, feeling uneasy.
"No, don’t worry about it."
Compared to her, something like that was a trivial matter.
The orthopedic specialist rushed over, assessed Stella’s situation, and seeing that it wasn’t complicated, quickly prepared to perform the reduction.
The doctor said the manual reduction would be quick, but it might be a little painful.
Although Stella said she understood, her hand, intertwined with Owen’s, tightened nervously.
Owen gently squeezed her fingers. "If it hurts, bite me."
Hearing this, the orthopedic specialist standing nearby chuckled and teased, "Well now, that’s not a bad idea."
