My Alt Account Became the World's No. 1 Hunter-Chapter 80: Together
Once he got in, he was greeted by his father, mother, and sister sitting at the dinner table.
The lights above cast a faint glow over the room, and the air felt heavier than usual, thick with something he couldn’t quite name.
Kaz stopped mid-step, glancing at each of them.
His mother’s hands were clasped tightly together, his father’s eyes were lowered toward the table, and Miko barely looked up from her seat.
Kaz blinked, confusion cutting through his unease. "W— What’s with the serious vibe—"
Before he could finish, his mother’s voice came sharp and steady. "Sit down, Kaz. We need to talk."
The tone in her voice left no room for jokes or questions.
Kaz felt his chest tighten, the rhythm of his heartbeat stumbling for a second.
He looked toward his father, hoping for some kind of hint, but all he got was a quiet nod that only made his nerves worse.
He swallowed hard, pulling out the chair and lowering himself into it, his movements slow and careful.
"O— Okay..." he managed, his voice barely steady enough to hide the tension sitting in his throat.
As soon as he sat down, his mother crossed her arms and said, "I know that me, your father, and your sister are not the only ones who noticed that Lanz is hiding something from all of us."
The air around the table shifted, heavy and expectant.
Kaz’s eyes widened slightly, then his expression darkened as he lowered his head.
His tone changed — steady and serious. "It seems I’m not the only one that noticed it after all..."
Kuro, his father, let out a small breath before nodding.
"Yeah... I took notice of this too when he suddenly left home for two days some time ago." His words came slower, measured, and the faint sound of the ceiling fan was the only sound that followed.
Miko leaned forward, resting her elbows on the table.
"That’s the reason why we’re going on a vacation," she said, her tone carrying a mix of curiosity and resolve. "That, and the fact that Dad got a promotion."
Kuro’s lips twitched into a grin that tried to lighten the tension.
"T— That’s also true," he said, wearing a smug look that didn’t quite mask how uneasy he felt.
The attempt at humor cracked the edge of the moment, but no one really laughed.
Kaz looked between them, trying to piece together what this "vacation" really meant.
It wasn’t unusual for their family to plan things suddenly, but this time felt odd.
The way his mom kept her eyes on him, the way his dad’s hand tapped against the table — it all felt off.
He leaned back in his chair, crossing his arms as his mind ran through the last few weeks.
"I tried talking to him a few times," Kaz muttered, breaking the silence. "He either changes the topic or brushes me off. I mean, it is normal for him to do stuff like that, but... I can’t help feeling something’s up."
His mother, Alleana, nodded, her voice softening slightly. "That’s what worries me. He’s been distant. I don’t want to pressure him, but something’s definitely going on."
Kuro sighed, resting his arms on the table. "We’ll figure it out. The vacation isn’t just for fun. I want everyone to slow down for a bit. Maybe when we’re all together, he’ll finally open up."
Miko tilted her head, looking between them. "You think he’s in trouble?" she asked, half-joking but with enough concern behind her voice to make it sting a little.
Kaz didn’t answer right away.
He thought about the few times he’d caught Lanz spacing out, lost in his own world.
There was something in his brother’s eyes — something he couldn’t explain — but he knew it wasn’t just stress from school or training.
His mom noticed the pause and spoke again, this time with more weight. "Whatever he’s hiding, I just hope it isn’t something dangerous. He’s still part of this family, no matter what’s going on in his head."
Kuro gave a slow nod, his usual calm slipping for a moment. "If it is, we’ll deal with it together. That’s all that matters."
The room stayed quiet for a while after that. No one touched their food. The only sound was the soft hum of the ceiling fan turning above them.
Kaz finally exhaled, his eyes drifting toward the window. "Yeah... together," he repeated, his voice low but steady.
Even with all the uncertainty, a small spark of determination burned in his chest.
Whatever Lanz was caught up in, they weren’t going to let him face it alone.
Alleana broke the silence and said with a soft, encouraging tone, "Now that we all know something’s off, will you help us figure it out, son?"
Kaz lowered his head again, taking a moment to think it over.
He felt the weight of their concern, but it wasn’t suffocating — it was grounding, reminding him that he wasn’t alone in any of this.
The corners of his lips lifted slightly as he finally spoke, his voice steady but carrying a trace of nervous humor.
"Of course I’ll help. You’d probably kick me out of the house if I didn’t," he said, and the hint of exaggeration made the tension in the room crack.
Instantly, everyone burst into laughter and giggles, the sound filling the space and making the air feel lighter, warmer, and more alive.
Kaz let himself relax, a smile tugging across his face as he joined in, realizing that the worry that had been hanging over them all could be met with shared determination and even a little humor.
"Well, I also want to figure out what Lanz is hiding," Kaz added, his voice quieter now but firm, carrying genuine concern. "I’m just glad we’re all in on this together."
His mother and father both turned to him, their eyes soft and warm, smiles spreading across their faces that held pride, relief, affection, and a bit of concern all at once.
The kind of smiles that said they were a family and they would handle everything as a unit, no matter what came next.
"Great! Now that that’s done, I call dibs on the TV tonight," Miko exclaimed suddenly, springing to her feet and rushing over to grab the remote.
Her energy was infectious, and it made everyone laugh again, their earlier seriousness now balanced perfectly with playful family chaos.
Kaz tried to chase after her, but she was already too close to the living room to catch.
He sprinted as fast as he could, desperation written across his face, only to realize she had an uncatchable lead.
"Nooooooooooooo!" Kaz yelled, collapsing onto the floor in pure despair, flinging his arms outward as if protesting the unfairness of life itself.
"Oh, stop overreacting, Kaz," Alleana said with a tone that combined amusement and exasperation, handing him an onion. "Instead, can you chop these up for me?"
Kaz groaned, glaring up at her, but before he could protest further, Kuro chimed in, mockingly shaking his head.
"Yeah, Kaz, help your mother," he said, his voice carrying just enough sarcasm to make it obvious he was trying to escape his own duties.
Kuro made a slow attempt to tiptoe toward the door, probably intending to go have a drink with the old friends waiting outside, but before he could even reach the threshold, a firm hand clamped down on his ear.
"And where do you think you’re going, huh, honey?" Alleana asked, raising a brow and keeping a tight grip to make her point clear.
"Ow, ow, ow, ow, ow. Okay, okay, honey, I won’t go, I won’t go," Kuro whined, hopping slightly in place while trying to free himself.
Alleana finally let go, giving him a pointed look. "You can go out and have a drink after helping here," she said firmly, and Kuro sagged with relief, rubbing his ear as he nodded.
"Sure, honey," Kuro replied, his voice muffled with exaggerated surrender.
Kaz leaned back against the wall, crossing his arms, a grin creeping across his face as he jabbed, "Yeah, Dad, why don’t you also help Mom?"
Kuro’s eyes went wide for a moment, and his mouth opened in protest, but it quickly turned into a half-smile mixed with an almost crying expression.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah," he muttered, conceding to the inevitable, his sarcasm now layered with a touch of defeat.
The kitchen settled into a controlled chaos, the onions on the cutting board ready for Kaz’s efforts, the occasional chuckle from Alleana, and Kuro lingering nearby, clearly plotting when he could escape but fully aware that any attempt now would be met with another scolding.
Kaz shook his head, smiling through the absurdity of it all, realizing that this was just another typical day in their family — sarcasm, minor chaos, and a little harmless torment blended seamlessly into domestic life.
