My Aloof Husband Can't Stop His Devoted Affection-Chapter 670 - 033: Sister-in-law
Mu Lezhu subconsciously looked at him. Lu Jingang noticed her gaze, his thin lips lightly pressed together, and under her watchful eyes, he took out his phone. Seeing the caller ID, his brows and eyes relaxed slightly, and he answered very naturally, "What’s up?"
As soon as he finished speaking, a sweet feminine voice came from the other end, "Brother Jingang, where are you? Why aren’t you coming to pick me up?"
Lu Jingang was taken aback, almost unable to respond. If he hadn’t seen Mu Lezhu turn her face away, moving closer to the car window seemingly to distance herself from him and avoid listening to their conversation.
Due to being in the car, where they sat close to each other and the phone was on her side, that sweet voice with a hint of coquettishness sounded, inexplicably causing Mu Lezhu’s heart to skip a beat, feeling a myriad of emotions that were unpleasant.
"If something’s up, your brother can pick you up just the same." Lu Jingang withdrew his gaze, speaking blandly, still seemingly calm.
"But I want you to come get me! Where are you now? Can I come find you? We haven’t seen each other in over a year! Don’t you miss me?" Lan Zhili spoke in a coquettish tone, desperately being coy.
But Lu Jingang was never enamored by this style. He’s seen many women who are both coquettish and charming, perhaps visually fatigued, such that he truly wasn’t fazed by it.
What was slightly different with Lan Zhili was that his tone was gentler when speaking to others, considering she’s Lan Yuchuan’s sister, and he watched her grow up, treating her as his own sister.
"No need, I’m busy here."
"Busy with what? Work stuff? I finally got to come back. Brother Jingang, don’t you miss me?" Lan Zhili asked with a slightly aggrieved voice, unsatisfied.
"Having dinner with your sister-in-law." Lu Jingang was silent for a moment, seriously pondering before speaking matter-of-factly, calm and collected.
The car was originally silent, and his words not only surprised Mu Lezhu but almost made the driver slam the brakes, fortunately, reason prevailed, saving his job.
When Mu Lezhu heard the word ’sister-in-law’, her heart skipped a beat, a strange feeling swept through, making her hair stand on end, and she looked at him with wide eyes in astonishment.
But Lu Jingang remained unfazed, understanding clearly what the little girl Lan Zhili, barely in her twenties, thoughts. Furthermore, he was now engaged and soon to be married. Even if the marriage wasn’t ideal, and Mu Lezhu had some distance from the ideal Lu family lady he envisioned, it was an irreversible fact. Moreover, she wasn’t as disagreeable as he initially thought.
He wasn’t sure when his perception of her changed. However, what he found distasteful still remained distasteful, nothing much changed. He had merely accepted Mu Lezhu as his future wife.
But as they say, words are unconscious, yet heard with intention!
Because of his ’sister-in-law’ remark, every time Mu Lezhu met his eyes, her heart would inexplicably race and panic, always the first to look away. At times, she’d blush like a nervous wreck, often reflecting on herself, but to no avail.
Lan Zhili, on the other end, also paused momentarily, recalling he got engaged at the end of last year and would soon be wed. Knowing this filled her with an inexplicable sadness, even making her want to cry.
Lily’s brother, Lan Yuchuan, seeing her like that, sighed helplessly, but didn’t stop her, as he knew this matter needed addressing. Having Lu Jingang tell her about his unrequited feelings would be the best way to resolve it.
He was quite surprised himself, wondering why his sister liked Lu Jingang. True, he was good-looking, had a good background, and was excellent in all respects, but his cold personality was quite off-putting. Many girls who liked him hesitated.
The thoughts of young girls are often simple. Perhaps she thought Lu Jingang treated her differently from other girls, that she was the exception. But in Lu Jingang’s eyes, she was just a sister.
"I researched your fiancée online; she indeed looks beautiful, has a good education, and comes from a decent family, suits you... perfectly, but..." Although Lan Zhili was pampered, she wasn’t unreasonable. When she first did background research on Mu Lezhu, she read through tear-filled eyes, overwhelmed with jealousy and discontent. Who could easily accept being beat to someone else’s punch? She was holding back tears, unable to continue her sentence.
"Yeah, it’s good. LiLi, you’re still young." Lu Jingang pursed his lips, clearly hearing Lan Zhili’s sobbing tone but remained unmoved, responding indifferently.
He wasn’t one for sweet-talking, nor did he know how to comfort people, so to say these words was quite good already.
Mu Lezhu listened to their entire conversation, and her instinct told her that whoever LiLi was to him wasn’t simple. Was that why he deliberately used the word ’sister-in-law’ just now?
Just to block any romantic advances?
Lu Jingang was never fond of unnecessary trouble. If he could resolve things with one sentence, he wouldn’t bother using two, always straightforward.
Thinking this, Mu Lezhu inexplicably felt discomfort and unhappiness. Her gentle face instantly drooped, eyes grew cold, and she glared at him in anger.
Coincidentally, Lu Jingang caught her glare while she looked at him.
This could be said to be the first time in their acquaintance that Mu Lezhu openly glared at him.
Lu Jingang saw her glaring eyes as if she might soar into the sky and was stunned, momentarily confused. His entire life, apart from his parents showing him displeasure or rolling their eyes, no one dared glare at him like that!
After exchanging a few more words with Lan Zhili, Lu Jingang hung up, casting a sideways glance at her, eyes revealing a hint of danger and sharpness, "Did you just roll your eyes at me?"
Hearing Lu Jingang’s words, Mu Lezhu instinctively glanced at him, her face softening into a gentle smile, "Are you talking to me?"
"Who else?" Lu Jingang raised an eyebrow, confidently retorting.
"No, you must have seen wrong." Mu Lezhu maintained a cold face, feeling that her earlier smile was too fake, almost unbearable even for herself.
