My Alleged Husband-Chapter 45 Explanation_1
Zhang Zhentian didn’t go straight home after leaving Xia Jing’s place; instead, he sneaked off to drink. He drank glass after glass, finishing bottle after bottle, as if he could never get drunk no matter how much he consumed. The pain in his heart was unbearable. He was angry but also felt helpless. When Xia Jing said those things, he was so furious he wanted to hit her. Still, he ended up just scolding Xia Jing and didn’t lay a hand on her. He couldn’t bear to, even though many times he knew she was being unreasonable, knew she couldn’t let go of her pride, yet he still loved Xia Jing. He couldn’t bear to see her suffer the slightest grievance, but sometimes his patience would run out, and he would lash out at her. After every outburst, he would be overcome with regret.
With glass after glass, Zhang Zhentian wondered: Xia Jing, oh Xia Jing, how should I treat you to be right? I can’t bear to hit you, but when I give in to you at every turn, you never seem to restrain yourself...
Zhang Zhentian drank late into the night and still hadn’t returned home. Old Master Zhang was getting anxious at home. In the morning, when he had asked Aunt Xu to wake Zhang Zhentian for breakfast, Aunt Xu said that Zhang Zhentian was no longer at home. At first, he thought Zhang Zhentian had gone out to do something, so he didn’t call to ask. But now it was almost midnight, and seeing that Zhang Zhentian had not yet returned, Old Master Zhang asked Aunt Xu to call him. However, Zhang Zhentian’s phone was switched off, causing Old Master Zhang even greater unease. He hurriedly asked Aunt Xu to call Xia Jing to inquire whether she knew where Zhang Zhentian might be.
Dong dong dong... Xia Jing’s phone rang.
"Hello, may I ask who you’re looking for?" Xia Jing answered the call.
"It’s me, Aunt Xu," Aunt Xu replied softly to Xia Jing.
"Oh, it’s Aunt Xu. Is there something you need from me this late?" Xia Jing politely asked Aunt Xu.
Aunt Xu didn’t speak, looking up at Elder Zhang. Old Master Zhang took the phone from Aunt Xu’s hands, waving his hand to signal her to carry on with her work. Realizing what Elder Zhang meant, she promptly continued with her tasks.
"Hello, Xia Jing, it’s your uncle. How have you been lately?" Old Master Zhang didn’t directly ask if she was with Zhang Zhentian; instead, he first inquired about her well-being, which touched Xia Jing’s heart.
"Uncle, thank you for caring. I’ve been doing very well recently. How about you?" Xia Jing fought back tears as she spoke to Old Master Zhang.
"Your uncle is doing very well; you take good care of yourself."
"I understand, Uncle. Thank you."
Old Master Zhang was a bit puzzled by Xia Jing’s sudden expression of gratitude and asked her, "Thank me for what?"
"Uncle, thank you for calling me tonight, and it’s not to inquire about the argument I had with Zhentian during the day. Thank you for your care all along," Xia Jing explained the reason for her thanks to Old Master Zhang.
Upon hearing this, Old Master Zhang was even more puzzled: "Xia Jing, what are you talking about? Did you and Zhentian have an argument today?"
"Yes, Uncle. Didn’t Zhentian tell you?" Xia Jing was curious why Old Master Zhang didn’t know.
"So you mean Zhentian isn’t with you now?" Old Master Zhang asked instead of answering.
Xia Jing was also confused by what Old Master Zhang said and responded, "Uncle, how could Zhentian possibly be here? After we fought today, he left and it’s probably been about ten hours since he left my place. What, he hasn’t come home?"
"Yeah, this morning when he left, I wasn’t even up yet. By the time I got up, I asked Aunt Xu to call him for a meal, but he was already not at home. I thought that he had gone to handle some business, but he still hasn’t returned, so I called to ask if Zhentian was with you!"
"Uncle, I’m sorry, Zhentian isn’t here with me!" Xia Jing felt very apologetic, knowing that her words earlier that day had hurt him, which was why Zhang Zhentian hadn’t come home. She felt quite guilty towards Old Master Zhang, "Uncle, I’m sorry, if I hadn’t argued with Zhentian, he wouldn’t be out this late, and you wouldn’t be worried about him so late at night."
Old Master Zhang didn’t know what to say. He asked Xia Jing, "Xia Jing, can you tell uncle why you fought with Zhentian?"
"Uncle, you’re not an outsider, so I will tell you. Last night I called your house and no one answered. I could understand that; I thought Zhentian must be busy. But after a while when I called his cell phone, just as he answered and before I could speak, he started yelling, mentioning Li Jiayuan, so..." Xia Jing was straightforward and didn’t mince her words when she recounted the reason for her fight with Zhang Zhentian to Old Master Zhang.
When Old Master Zhang heard this, he felt a bit awkward and tried to calm Xia Jing, "Xia Jing, don’t be angry. It might be a misunderstanding, you know?"
Xia Jing thought Old Master Zhang was trying to make excuses for Zhang Zhentian and immediately said to him, "Uncle, please don’t make excuses for him. I already told Zhentian not to contact Li Jiayuan, but he just ignored my words. Right after reconciling with me, he called Li Jiayuan that night. How could I not be angry?"
Once Old Master Zhang heard Xia Jing’s words, he suddenly realized why she was fighting with Zhang Zhentian—it had to do with the phone call. He felt a bit embarrassed and decided to tell Xia Jing the truth, as he didn’t want her to argue with Zhentian.
"Cough, cough, Xia Jing, listen to uncle. Actually, last night when you called and didn’t get an answer, it wasn’t because Zhentian was busy, but rather..."
Before Old Master Zhang could finish, Xia Jing interrupted him, saying to Xia Jingyi, "Uncle, I just knew it! He didn’t answer the phone definitely because he was on the phone with Li Jiayuan."
Old Master Zhang didn’t know how to describe Xia Jing; he thought to himself: There’s a saying that’s indeed true, the IQ of a person in love really is in the negatives!
"Xia Jing, you really misunderstood. Can you calm down and let uncle finish?"
"Uncle, go ahead, I’m listening."
"Xia Jing, the reason nobody answered the phone last night was because Li Jiayuan called and scared both me and Zhentian. So, in the end, I told Aunt Xu not to answer any calls, and that’s why no one picked up when you called. It wasn’t because we were talking to Li Jiayuan. Please believe uncle!"
All of a sudden, Xia Jing didn’t know what to say. She hadn’t expected things to be like this. She thought to herself: If that’s really the case, then Zhentian’s yelling was perhaps because Li Jiayuan had been bothering him with her calls, and when I called, he thought it was Li Jiayuan again, and that’s why he lashed out? If that’s truly what happened, didn’t I wrong Zhentian?
Xia Jing slapped her forehead and said to Old Master Zhang, "Uncle, don’t worry, I think I know where Zhentian is. You should rest early, I’m going to find him now."
"All right, just be careful on the road," Old Master Zhang said to Xia Jing.
Xia Jing acknowledged and hung up the phone, then quickly changed her shoes and dashed out.
As Old Master Zhang listened to the sound of the phone hanging up, he breathed a sigh of relief, relieved that he had told the truth. Otherwise, Zhentian might have argued with Xia Jing over this for a long time.
