MTL - Into Unscientific-Chapter 12 Maverick's Two Birthdays (Part 2)
Chapter 12 Calf’s Two Birthdays (Part 2)
As a celebrity in the history of physics, the birthday of Maverick Niu is a bit special in the 21st century.
Because if you look it up, he has two birthdays:
January 4, 1643 and December 25, 1642.
The reason for this comes down to calendar issues, and both birthdays are actually accurate.
However, the one on December 25 uses the Julian calendar, and the one on January 4 uses the Gregorian calendar.
The so-called Julian calendar is a calendar issued by the ancient Roman dictator Julius Caesar in 46 BC—the one that was kicked by a bat.
The Julian calendar is a Gregorian calendar, which sets the time for the earth to revolve around the sun, that is, the return year as a year.
But anyone who is familiar with geography knows that the year of regression is not an integer, but 365.2422 days.
The Julian calendar sets a year with 365 days, which is slightly less than a return year. For this reason, a leap year is set every four years, with 366 days in a leap year.
In this way, the average year is 365.25 days, which is 0.0078 days more than the regression year.
According to simple mathematical multiplication, the Julian calendar will add 3 days on average every 400 years, and after more than 1,500 years, it will add 10 days.
So in 1582, Pope Gregory issued an order:
Counting 10 days less that year, the day after October 4, 1582 was not October 5, but October 15.
At the same time, change the idea of leap year. Any year whose number is divisible by 4 is a leap year, but when the year number is followed by a "century year" with two "0s", the year must be divisible by 400 to be a leap year.
In this way, there are 365.2425 days in a year on average, which is 26 seconds longer than the return year, and there will be an error of 1 day after about 3000 years.
This new calendar is called the Gregorian calendar, which is the Gregorian calendar used today.
The Gregorian calendar was implemented in 1582, but the United Kingdom is not a Catholic country and does not obey the pope's order, so they delayed the switch to the Gregorian calendar until 1752.
That is to say, when the calf was born, the British still used the Julian calendar.
So in English literature, it is customary to use the Julian calendar to calculate Newton’s birthday, which is December 25, 1642.
In addition, there are many countries that use the Gregorian calendar later than the United Kingdom. For example, Russia is very typical. It did not switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar until 1919.
For example, the Russian October Ganasha happened on November 7, 1917 in history, but why is it called October?
Because Russia was still using the Julian calendar at that time, that day was October 25, 1917 in the Julian calendar.
But after other countries switched to the Gregorian calendar, the Orthodox churches in Russia and other countries still insist on using the Julian calendar.
So there is an interesting thing in these countries:
They actually celebrate Christmas on January 7th in the Gregorian calendar. (If you are interested, you can search it, the author was embarrassed because of this incident)
Born on Christmas, he was bullied when he was young, and he has always been a very devout believer.
Therefore, during the years when Mr. Niu was still alive, he always believed that he was one of the few people chosen by God, and he had the duty and obligation to restore the falsified scriptures to the original.
Mr. Niu wrote about 16.7 million words of various works in his life, about 84% of which were theological works, so he was a great theologian, and he studied physics to better prove the existence of God —Lao Niu’s theological journey in this life has even been independently regarded as a topic in the academic circles of later generations, and the relevant citation factors are not low.
However, due to the slight difference between the beliefs held by Mr. Niu and the current teachings, classmate Maverick Niu is still just a youthful version and has no right to speak.
So he has never dared to make his inner thoughts public, and can only pretend to be an ordinary student who loves theology in silence.
But I didn’t expect it to be today.
The secret hidden in my heart coincides with what a foreigner called "this son"?
This foreign culture's definition of "this kind of person" undoubtedly gave the Mavericks a shot in the arm!
This is the same as putting phosphorous powder on will-o’-the-wisps. For those with scientific knowledge, it will be debunked in minutes, but for those who believe in ghosts and gods, it is the ‘Taoism’.
Therefore, for the first time, Maverick looked at Xu Yun differently
He even patted Xu Yun on the shoulder rarely, and the wig on his head almost fell off under the excitement.
If there was a progress bar for Newton's favorability with Xu Yun at this time, it should have risen by 20% with a whoosh.
In a good mood, Newton couldn't help touching the copper base again, then turned his head and said to Xu Yun:
"Fat Yu, let me take you out to have a look."
Xu Yun naturally would not refuse:
"Then I will trouble you, Mr. Newton."
Then the two walked out of the room for the first time under the leadership of Xiao Niu.
Britain in 1665 had not yet undergone the industrial revolution, coal had not yet begun to become a popular fuel, and the famous "smoke" had not yet appeared.
Therefore, the main source of domestic fog is the combination of the warmer water flow in the North Atlantic Ocean and the cooler water flow in the British Isles area. At the same time, a large amount of warm air blown from the sea meets the cooler air mass over the islands, forming sea fog and land fog.
Although this kind of natural fog is equally thick, it will not give people a sense of suffocation of despair, let alone blood, tears and sin.
In addition, the weather today is not bad, so at a glance, the rural atmosphere of the 17th century is still very strong.
Of course, the 'breath of life' is also strong - one of the smells is still from the calf.
After all, if you appreciate this stuff, you won’t take the initiative to stay away from you just because you are a physicist.
According to the records in Lao Niu’s manuscript compiled by Michael White, when he was studying, Mr. Niu would take a bath in a public bathroom in London on average once a month and a half, and the rest would be the baptism during the mass.
Now Lincolnshire does not have the kind of bathing facilities in London, so the smell of Mavericks is quite unique.
Perhaps it was because Xu Yun's description of "this son" was in line with his intentions, but Maverick's attitude at this time is much more enthusiastic than before.
I saw him pointing to the north of the house, and took the initiative to introduce:
"Fat Fish, that direction has the only windmill in Woolsthorpe, from which the flour used by every family to make bread is milled.
But if you want to grind noodles, you’d better go to the queue early, otherwise there will be a group of aunts standing there watching you, and those village women will be a little bit talkative—especially your oriental appearance, which is really too curious. "
Hearing Newton's words, Xu Yun, who had been calm before, suddenly had a bunch of pictures of aunts pointing at him:
"Look at him, Mrs. Lennon, he looks even stranger than Benjamin next door."
"Aunt George, please stop your stupid groundhog behavior, it's rude!"
"Oh my dear God, you don't have a crush on this young man, do you? If you let Uncle Henry see it, he will be mad!"
Thinking of this, a row of cold sweat immediately broke out on Xu Yun's forehead:
Good guy, the village aunt is indeed a creature that is almost incomprehensible in all ages and in all over the world.
Then Xiao Niu introduced several other less obvious locations, and finally patted Xu Yun on the shoulder:
"Fat fish, come with me."
Xu Yun regained his focus, obediently followed Maverick for a few steps, and came to a low storage room.
Then the Maverick took out an ancient key from his body. The appearance was extremely rough, even with a little decayed rust. The modern pin lock was not invented by Nerus Yale Jr. in 1860. Can't even talk about the level of craftsmanship.
Then the calf twisted the lock a few times, pushed open the wooden door, and took out two axes from it.
Looking at Maverick Niu, who looks like a hero of Liangshan, Xu Yun couldn't help showing curiosity:
"Mr. Newton, what are we going to do?"
"Chop some wood, and then I will take you to my uncle's house to have a face recognition. We will have dinner at his place after that. Don't worry, my cousins are very cute."
"Oh, uncle's house."
Xu Yun nodded subconsciously, but the next second, he suddenly realized something, and his eyes were as big as thirty-one Li Ronghao:
"Wait, cousin?"
