Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 781: I’m Sorry
"Let her leave here?" Miles Sterling seemed to think he had misheard, "Are you kidding me?"
Bianca Jennings smiled helplessly, "It seems all I’ve said was in vain, you still don’t understand the real issue. Letting Vanessa return to a normal life is the foundation for you to start anew. If you don’t give her the right to choose, how can she choose you?"
Miles Sterling retorted, "If I give her the right, would she definitely choose me? If I let her go, she’d probably run far away."
Bianca Jennings: "If she has the chance to leave, it’s inevitable she’ll stay far away from you, but if you like her, why not follow in her footsteps? Why not express your affection for her in a different way?"
Miles Sterling laughed at himself, "Do you think she’d willingly accept me?"
Bianca Jennings: "It seems you do have some self-awareness, but if you don’t try, who knows what the outcome might be? Taking a step back, if you’ve done all you can and Vanessa still won’t accept you, capturing her and locking her up here won’t cost you anything."
But Bianca Jennings thought, if Miles Sterling could genuinely take this step to let Vanessa go, even if Vanessa truly didn’t accept him, he probably wouldn’t want to clip her wings and lock her in this prison again.
Miles Sterling thought seriously about Bianca Jennings’ words, seemingly finding some truth in them.
He decided to first try letting Vanessa go, if things got out of control, he could bring her back, honestly, there wasn’t much risk.
It’s just... he feared that allowing Vanessa to get used to freedom might backfire.
Because he felt, without erasing her memory, getting Vanessa to fall in love with him was practically a fantasy.
So, Miles Sterling said to Bianca Jennings, "I can let her go, but you have to erase her past memories first."
Bianca Jennings: "Why don’t you create beautiful memories to overshadow her painful ones? ’I’m sorry’ might seem powerless, but sometimes apologizing is a good way to make amends."
Miles Sterling didn’t immediately give his decision or plan, and Bianca Jennings knew he needed time to break away from the long-held misconceptions in his perception.
After having only a bite or two of dinner, Miles Sterling drove off.
Bianca Jennings thought he might be avoiding the issue again.
A little past three in the morning, the sound of a car stopping outside could be heard.
Bianca Jennings walked to the window to take a look, confirming it was Miles Sterling’s car.
Faintly hearing footsteps going upstairs, and Miles Sterling whispering with a servant, most likely heading to Vanessa’s room. 𝒇𝓻𝓮𝓮𝙬𝙚𝒃𝒏𝓸𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝓬𝓸𝒎
It seemed he had made up his mind.
Bianca Jennings didn’t follow, just stayed in her room, listening closely to the noises outside, still a bit worried they might start fighting again.
Miles Sterling sent away the servant watching the room, leaving only him and Vanessa in the room.
In the middle of the night, Vanessa was woken by Miles Sterling’s arrival but didn’t move from her sleeping position.
Miles Sterling closed the door and walked to the bedside. After his footsteps stopped, the room was quiet for a while before he spoke, softly, "You’re awake, aren’t you?"
Although Vanessa could tell his tone was unusual, she kept her eyes closed without responding.
"I have something to talk to you about."
This negotiating tone made Vanessa doubt whether the person standing by her bed was really Miles Sterling.
"I know you don’t want to see me, so from now on, you can live the life you want."
Upon hearing this, Vanessa opened her eyes, staring at Miles Sterling as if trying to discern something from his expression.
She felt these words coming from Miles Sterling’s mouth were like an unbelievable dream.
He must be playing some trick again.
His personality was eccentric, his moods unpredictable; perhaps he was having another episode.
Seeing Vanessa open her eyes, Miles Sterling continued, "I’ve asked the doctor, and he said your physical therapy will take about half a month, and you’ll need to be cautious and exercise on your own; avoid intense leg movements for at least half a year. Based on your walking recovery, there should be no issue with discarding the cane and walking normally."
Vanessa frowned at him, wondering what he was really trying to say.
Miles Sterling: "During the recovery period, it’s best if you stay here, at least there are people to take care of you. When the doctor says you can live independently, you can ask them to leave anytime."
"As for this house, it was initially designed based on your preferences, or at least what I think you’d like. I’ll transfer ownership to you, if you like, you can continue living here. If not, sell it and buy a new place in a city you prefer."
Miles Sterling explained on his own, then took out a bank card from his bag, placing it on the nightstand next to Vanessa’s bed, "This is the card from your previous article fees, and since it was used before, the exact amount is unclear. I’ve deposited some money, making it a round figure; there’s five million inside, which should last you a while. The password is still the one you set."
Vanessa looked at Miles Sterling and then at the bank card on the nightstand.
She didn’t believe Miles Sterling would suddenly change; she preferred to think it was a drama he directed and performed to test her thoughts.
If she showed any trace of happiness, Miles Sterling might immediately change his demeanor and then unleash his anger on her.
"The harm I’ve caused you in the past probably can’t be compensated for anymore. Allowing you to leave and live the life you want might be the best way to make amends."
He said, pressing his lips in silence for a moment, taking a deep breath, as if mustering great resolve to say these things so lightly: "I’ll be leaving here soon, rest and recover well, and once you’re better, go wherever you want."
After saying this, he turned and walked towards the door, pausing slightly as he left, his voice low and hoarse, gently drifting into Vanessa’s ears, "...I’m sorry."
With those words, the door closed, and his footsteps softly echoed down the stairs.
Soon after, the sound of a car engine starting reached them, as lights illuminated the road outside.
The car moved away from the lit area, sound disappearing into the night...
Vanessa looked at the bank card left on the nightstand, still trying to process what had happened.
Was that really Miles Sterling just now?
