Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 604: You’re the Only One with a Wife?
Heath had just registered and was queuing up, but before his number was called, the police station took him away.
The reason was that during a fight with Miles Sterling at the mall, they destroyed a lot of merchandise, and then both just walked away like nothing happened.
The mall manager took the surveillance footage to the police station to file a complaint, demanding compensation.
Heath was a regular at the police station and had a slight connection to Franklin Sutton.
This sly guy tried to cozy up to Franklin Sutton as soon as he saw him at the station, but Franklin was busy and didn’t entertain him much.
After the statement was taken and the compensation amount was agreed upon, Miles Sterling left the station with a disgruntled expression, leaving the Sterling butler to handle the rest.
Heath spat in Miles Sterling’s direction before sitting down at the station to wait for his cousin to bring over the compensation money.
Because of Wallace Warner’s incident, Shane Warner was busy at The Warner until after eight before he had some free time, and with the funeral in the coming days, he certainly wouldn’t be idle.
After leaving The Warner that night, Shane first took Audrey Sutton home before heading to the police station to deal with Heath’s matter.
Naturally, Shane would pay the money, but eventually, it would be deducted from Heath’s salary.
Franklin Sutton had usually finished work by this time, and Shane had assumed he was staying late because of Heath.
But he was surprised to find that Franklin Sutton was actually waiting for him.
Franklin called Shane into his office, smiling as he said, "Guess what I found."
Shane clearly didn’t have the patience for Franklin’s games: "Just say it, my wife is waiting for me at home."
Franklin rolled his eyes disdainfully and muttered, "You’re not the only one with a wife, you know?"
Afterward, Franklin turned and took a file folder from the desk, handing it to Shane: "Take a look."
Shane reached out, untied the thin twine wrapped around the folder, and glanced at the contents. When he saw Harrison Griffin’s photo, his already deep black eyes grew even darker.
Franklin’s tone was slightly smug: "See this guy? Does he remind you of anything?"
Shane said nothing, quickly flipping through the documents before stuffing them back into the folder.
Thinking Shane hadn’t seen the key point, Franklin hurried to say, "Look at the mole at the corner of his mouth and recall how Gabriel Armstrong described that person?"
Shane, fingering the twine on the folder, asked flatly, "How’d you find him?"
Franklin chuckled: "That kid Heath, though he loves making trouble outside, really knows his way around. I chatted with him idly in the afternoon about the case, and he mentioned this guy. When I checked him out, I felt there was something here — Harrison Griffin used to work at The Warner. Do you remember that?"
Shane handed back the refilled file to Franklin and said, "No need to investigate further."
Franklin’s smile froze, puzzled as he asked Shane, "What do you mean?"
"Let’s leave it at that; there’s no meaning in continuing," said Shane as he turned and headed for the door.
Franklin shouted at his back: "Just because you say stop, we stop? I spent so much time on this case, how am I supposed to explain this to the higher-ups?"
"That’s your problem," said Shane, stepping out and shutting the door behind him.
Franklin stared dumbfounded at the spot, a bit stunned and a bit angry. Only after Shane had been gone for a while did Franklin collect himself, cursing under his breath as he packed up to go home, "Damn, what a mess! If it weren’t for my sister, I wouldn’t even bother with your shit."
After picking Heath up from the police station, Shane stood at the door and handed him five hundred bucks, saying, "Advance living expenses, spend it wisely. Use it sparingly, and it should last till your next paycheck. You won’t starve. I’m too busy to deal with your mess right now. If you end up in the station again, I’ll have Uncle come get you himself."
"Come on, cousin, I know I was wrong. I promise it’ll never happen again. But..." Heath shook the few bills in his hand, saying, "Isn’t this a bit too little? There’re over twenty days left, and just five hundred bucks isn’t enough."
"The company covers your board and lodging, so five hundred is plenty for extras."
Shane seemed in a rush to get home and didn’t argue with Heath over the money. He headed straight to the parking spot, and Heath dawdled after him. Just as he reached the car, he saw Shane drive off.
"Hey! Cousin, I haven’t gotten in yet!"
It seemed Shane never intended to give Heath a ride back, as he drove off without pause.
Heath watched Shane’s car vanish from view and stood in the cold night wind for a while before hailing a cab.
By this time, Shane had already returned home.
Audrey Sutton was clearly waiting for him to come back, likely getting up when she heard the car, standing by the door.
Shane quickly locked the car and went over, using his body to block the wind by the door, saying softly to Audrey, "Still not sleeping?"
"You weren’t home yet."
Shane hugged her and stepped inside, closing the door behind them: "Go to bed quickly, we have to get up early tomorrow."
"I’ll run a bath for you," said Audrey, heading upstairs.
Shane just smiled at her back, feeling that as long as she was around, this winter warmth persisted.
He turned off the TV downstairs, filled Audrey’s thermos with hot water, grabbed the pillow she’d been favoring on the sofa, and switched off the living room lights as he headed upstairs.
Audrey pulled Shane’s pajamas from the closet, handing them to him: "Take a soak, it’ll warm you up in the cold. Besides, you’ve had a busy day, a bath will help you relax."
Shane took the clothes from her with a smile, asking, "Care to join me?"
Audrey gave him a playful glare: "Go wash up quickly! I’m waiting for you to sleep together!"
Shane relaxed in the tub, closing his eyes and feeling the water temperature, his chaotic heart gradually calming.
Though she said she’d wait to sleep together, when Shane finished his bath, he found Audrey already asleep, clutching her Bunny Mister.
Afraid of waking her, Shane took the hairdryer to the adjacent nursery to dry his hair.
Before leaving, he paused at the door to take in the nursery’s decor, imagining life after the baby’s arrival and feeling a distinct warmth.
But thinking of the child they lost—a wound that would never heal—left a mark on his heart.
With a sigh, he turned off the nursery’s light and returned to the bedroom. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺
Gently tugging the Bunny from Audrey’s arms, he tossed it onto the bed and switched off the bedside lamp, enveloping Audrey’s warm body in his embrace.
She mumbled something, smacked her lips, adjusted to a more comfortable but less graceful sleeping position, and remained asleep.
Shane lightly placed his hand on her belly, holding her close and contentedly closing his eyes.
