Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 539: I Still Have Unfinished Business
Joy smiled indulgently, raised her hand to ruffle Audrey Sutton’s hair, and said, "You better stay put here. If anything happens to you while I’m out, President Warner might hold me accountable, and I can’t bear that responsibility. Besides, learning those things is pointless; you’re better off playing games here."
Audrey Sutton wasn’t actually planning to go; she just wanted to see Joy’s reaction. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Clearly, Joy didn’t want her to tag along, probably fearing Audrey would mess up her good plans.
Watching Joy leave, Audrey saw that Director Armstrong wasn’t around and observed Director Quinne and the department head, but nothing seemed unusual.
Audrey Sutton found herself with nothing to do, so she sneaked upstairs to find Shane Warner.
On his office floor, she happened to see him walking over with Lucian Quinn, coming from the direction of the meeting room.
Seeing Audrey Sutton, Shane paused his conversation with Lucian, looked at her, and asked, "Aren’t you supposed to be working? Why did you come up here?"
Audrey approached him and said, "A mix of work and rest."
Shane: "I knew it, you just found it fresh temporarily. If you don’t want to continue, just let me know; don’t force yourself."
Audrey shook her head: "No way, I have big things unfinished."
Shane: "What big things could you possibly have?"
Audrey teased, "You’ll find out in due time; I’m going to do you a huge favor."
Shane: "The biggest favor you could do for me is not causing any trouble."
Audrey: "You just look down on me."
Shane handed the folder in his hand to Lucian, then leaned down to ask Audrey, "So, what are you doing here now? Did your department head ask you to report work to me?"
Audrey shook her head, smiled a bit sheepishly, and said, "I’m a bit hungry. I came up to find something to eat. Do you have any cookies or candy in your office?"
"Do I look like someone who would keep those things in the office?"
Lucian chimed in, "I have some sour plum candies and cookies left by my brother from his last visit; no one’s eaten them yet."
Audrey immediately let go of Shane’s hand and walked over to Lucian: "Thanks, Luc."
By the door of Lucian’s office, he paused and said to Shane, "Shane, I’ll organize the documents and send them over to you later."
Shane nodded: "Okay, no rush."
After speaking, Shane gently tapped Audrey on the head: "Don’t eat too much candy."
Before Audrey could respond, Lucian chuckled, "There weren’t many to begin with."
Shane grunted in acknowledgement, watched Audrey as she snuck into Lucian’s office, then whispered to Lucian, "Just give her two pieces of candy. If she eats too much, she might not eat lunch."
Lucian nodded understandingly, smiling: "Okay."
Audrey went in and surveyed Lucian’s office. Compared to Shane’s, it was much smaller, but more than sufficient for one person’s work.
Lucian walked over to his desk, opened a drawer, and looked in: "There are some sour plum candies, milk candies, and two chocolate bars."
"Thanks, Luc. By the way, I heard from Sister Phoebe the other day that you’re planning to buy a house?"
Lucian didn’t hide anything and smiled lightly: "I’m considering it, but I haven’t decided where to buy yet. Flora said there’s no rush."
Hearing Lucian call Flora’s name so naturally, Audrey couldn’t help but smile like a proud aunt: "Luc, did Flora ever tell you about her past?"
Lucian took out the candies from the drawer and handed them to Audrey, asking, "What things?"
Audrey: "Like her family situation or past relationships."
Lucian: "Oh, I haven’t asked and she hasn’t said, but I’m aware."
Audrey paused while unwrapping the candy and tentatively asked, "So, you’re aware that she’s had many boyfriends before?"
Lucian calmly nodded: "Yes, I’m aware."
Seeing Lucian not at all surprised, Audrey felt relieved for Flora, and proceeded to pop the candy into her mouth, saying, "Flora isn’t really fickle. Well, you probably know about her family. She didn’t receive much parental love growing up, so she’s always longed for someone to rely on. Her thinking can be quite pragmatic; she always wanted someone who loves her and is also well-off because she’s suffered too much poverty. But she’s not a bad person. In every relationship, she was genuine, but she was always let down, which is why she is now somewhat fearful of love and hasn’t dared to readily accept you."
Lucian listened with a gentle smile: "I understand how she feels, which is why I haven’t pressured her."
Audrey: "Luc, the reason I’ve told you all this is because I was worried that you might misunderstand Flora for her past relationships, but it seems I’ve overthought it."
Lucian smiled warmly and said, "I should thank you for speaking on my behalf. I know if it weren’t for you persuading her, she probably wouldn’t have agreed to date me so soon."
Audrey, with the candy in her mouth, said, "I think you’re a good person, unlike Brother Xavier and others who love to party hard. If it were Luc, I wouldn’t help him either."
Lucian laughed softly: "I guess I’ll have to buy you more candy in the future."
Audrey stood up: "Just now, don’t tell Brother Xavier or Luc what I said, alright?"
Lucian: "Don’t worry."
Audrey: "I’ll let you get back to work without disturbing you."
Audrey put the remaining candies into her coat pocket, then discreetly peeked into Shane’s office.
She pushed the door open a crack and saw him standing by the window on the phone, back facing her, so she silently closed the door without disturbing him.
She knew that if she went to him, he’d put aside his work to accompany her, and he would always make up for the missed work after she went to sleep at night.
Audrey still felt sorry for him, so during working hours, she refrained from disturbing him as much as she could.
Three days passed, and Audrey finally understood what Seraphina Vaughn meant when she said eating sunflower seeds and watching dramas every day was tiring.
Now, Audrey was frequently late to work and left early, and even in the office, she didn’t do her job properly.
Regarding the few directors, she hadn’t found any evidence to incriminate them yet, but it was almost confirmed there were hidden secrets among them.
In the past couple of days, Barry Barrett and Director Quinne had become quite close, although not to the point of pursuing or dating; their frequent interactions were mainly work-related.
However, Barry Barrett mentioned that her woman’s intuition suggests Director Quinne is likely hiding secrets, though it’s unclear if they’re related to the falsification of accounts.
