Mr. Warner, Your Wife is Running Away Again!-Chapter 536: Because I’m More Outstanding
While Audrey Sutton was still typing, Barry Barrett sent a voice message over: "Sutton! I think I’ve discovered a huge secret!"
Hearing this from Barry, Audrey deleted the words she had just typed and asked, "What’s going on? Weren’t you guys having dinner outside?"
Barry: "It’s the dinner that turned into a problem, I’m all flustered right now!"
Audrey, hearing Barry’s uneasy tone, started to worry, sat up from the bed, and called her directly: "Where are you now? Are you okay?"
Barry: "I hid in the bar restroom; they’ve already left."
Audrey sensed something was off: "What are you hiding from?"
Barry lowered her voice a bit: "I think there’s something going on with Joy and Director Armstrong! They seem to be cooking the books!"
Audrey was taken aback, glanced at the still-closed bathroom door, and said in surprise: "No way? Joy wouldn’t do that, would she?"
Barry’s voice was shaky with nerves: "I... I don’t know if I misheard, I had a bit to drink, my head’s all woozy, when the dinner ended, everyone left, and before I left, I went to the restroom. As I was about to leave, I heard Joy’s voice in the smoking area next to the bathroom."
Audrey: "What did she say?"
Barry: "Although she didn’t mention your name, it seemed like they were talking about you, saying something about that girl being in the department now, to be cautious, and not let her notice anything. Then I heard Director Armstrong say, she doesn’t understand the accounts, what’s there to fear? She’s just there to muddle through, even if you put the ledgers right in front of her, she wouldn’t notice a thing."
Audrey listened thoughtfully as Barry continued: "Then Joy said, President Warner suddenly assigned her to our department, I’m worried President Warner might have already noticed something, so let’s just behave for now."
"Click—" The bathroom door opened, Audrey glanced toward the bathroom, and said to the person on the other end of the call: "Don’t alert the enemy for now, let’s meet up and talk tomorrow, you should hurry back to the campus."
Barry: "Okay, do you think we should tell your Third Young Master about this?"
Audrey thought for a moment and said: "Not yet, let’s confirm it first before doing that."
Shane Warner walked over to the bed, saw Audrey hang up the phone, and asked, "Who called so late?"
Audrey smiled and calmly said: "Bear, she’s having dinner outside, I called to check in on her and told her to head back early." 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝙚𝙬𝓮𝙗𝒏𝙤𝒗𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Shane wasn’t suspicious, reached out to touch her hair, and said, "Sleeping with your hair still wet."
Audrey touched her hair; it was just slightly moist at this point, she thought this was dry, but seeing Shane plugging in the hairdryer, she didn’t argue and obediently sat by the bed, letting him dry it to his satisfaction.
In the late autumn night, the gentle rain quietly fell, spreading tiny circles in the stream outside, adding a chill to the cool night.
In the middle of the night, Audrey reluctantly got up to use the bathroom, and returning to bed, snuggled back into Shane’s arms almost seamlessly and fell asleep again, like she was sleepwalking.
On the contrary, Shane, who she woke during the night, took a while to fall back asleep.
The next morning, Audrey dreamed about the things Barry told her last night.
Upon waking, she couldn’t recall exactly what she dreamed about, just the feeling of oppression and tension, like she was constantly hiding, constantly running away, afraid of being found by Joy and them.
She picked up her phone from the bedside table to check the time, it was not yet eight.
Not wanting to get out of bed, she lay there scrolling through comments in her comic’s section on her phone; the first season had ended, and the second season hadn’t begun yet, recently she’s been busy with the film adaptation of her previous comic, so she hasn’t had time for the second season.
Shane returned to the room from the gym after working out and saw Audrey lying on the bed checking her phone; he seemed a bit surprised: "Awake so early today?"
Audrey put down the phone and looked at him sideways: "You really have great energy; you don’t linger in bed even in this cold weather."
Shane stood by the wardrobe, picking out clothes as he spoke: "Do you think everyone’s like you?"
Audrey laughed mischievously and said: "Lift your shirt and let me see your workout results."
Shane’s movements to pick out clothes paused for a moment, and he turned with a frown, saying: "I think you’ve learned mischief from Phoebe King."
Audrey sat up in anticipation: "Come on, let me see."
Shane put the robe he picked out over his arm, turned around and gave her a cheeky smile, then lifted his white T-shirt for less than a second before letting it down.
Audrey leaned forward, saying eagerly: "I didn’t see it clearly."
Shane held the clothes and walked toward the bathroom: "Don’t behave like a cheeky rogue, influenced by Phoebe King."
Finishing his words, he entered the bathroom, closing the door behind him.
Audrey found her slippers and got out of bed, directly pushing open the bathroom door.
Shane was startled for a moment while standing in the shower undressing.
"Hehe." Audrey chuckled slyly, walked to the sink, and said: "I’m just washing my face and brushing my teeth."
Shane ignored her, silently pulling the frosted shower door, continuing to undress.
Audrey squeezed toothpaste onto her toothbrush, saying: "Aren’t you working out for me to see? Why shut the door?"
"Whoosh—" As soon as Audrey finished speaking, Shane decisively opened the door and continued taking off his pants.
Audrey was only teasing him initially, not expecting him to actually do it.
Seeing him starting to take off his shorts, Audrey turned her head away, mumbling to the mirror while brushing her teeth: "Who’s the real rogue here?"
After washing her face and brushing her teeth, Audrey leaned toward the mirror, looking at her face with frustration: "I’ve got a pimple now."
Shane finished showering, turned off the water, and said: "Eating more fried pork chop should help."
Audrey rummaged through the cabinet next to the sink, found the acne cream she had bought before, and applied it to her face, saying: "You say you don’t use skincare products, so why is your skin so good?"
Shane: "Probably because I’m naturally excellent."
Audrey couldn’t help but roll her eyes in the mirror, adding sarcastically: "Let’s hope some people only grow wrinkles instead of pimples."
Shane said nothing.
After applying the cream, Shane walked out of the shower area, and Audrey asked: "Have you been using my bottle of moisturizer?"
Shane’s eyes shifted a bit, disdainfully saying: "Who’s using your random stuff?"
Audrey doubted aloud, mumbling: "Then how come this bottle runs out so fast, before one bottle could last a year, and now it’s almost finished in less than half a year."
Shane pretended not to hear, stuffed clothes into the washing machine, while listening to Audrey murmur in the mirror as she examined the pimples: "Did they skimp on the materials?"
Shane set the washing machine’s timer, turned, and walked out of the bathroom: "I’ll go make some congee, finish up and come down soon."
