Chapter 93: Chapter 93: From Now On, I’ll Be Your Family

"I am willing."

Eliza Grant was arranged by Miles Monarch to stay in a side hall of Volantis Palace, very close to the main hall. After a while, someone from The Imperial Kitchen sent a meal. Looking at the large table of delicacies, Eliza thought of her birth mother far away in the Kingdom of Quincy.

He was sent as a hostage, and his mother’s situation must be worse. In this cold weather, did her asthma flare up again, and who was taking care of her?

Miles Monarch saw that Eliza Grant took a few bites and then stopped. He asked, puzzled, "Why did you stop eating? Is it not tasty?" He picked up one of the dishes to inspect it. "I had the Imperial Chef make a few of my favorite dishes. If you don’t like them, I’ll have them redo it."

"No," Eliza mumbled, taking a few more bites. "It’s very tasty," but swallowed too quickly, leading to a bit of choking. "I’ve never had such delicious dishes."

Miles Monarch watched him without blinking. "If it’s tasty," he said, wiping the tears off Eliza’s face with a hand, "then why are you crying?"

In the end, Eliza cried while finishing his meal, and for how long he cried, Miles continued wiping his tears.

At night, Eliza tossed and turned in bed, unable to fall asleep. She had actually cried in front of a child two years younger than her for almost half an hour...

To have to be comforted by someone else, she deeply shamed herself.

She was always composed in front of her mother and never shed tears.

The more Eliza thought, the more sleep eluded her. With eyes swollen like walnuts, she sat up, ready to find something to do, when she heard a knock at the door.

"Ethan Grant, are you asleep?"

It was Miles Monarch.

Eliza got out of bed, ran over, and stood on tiptoe to open the door for Miles.

Miles let out a "whoosh" and dove straight into Eliza’s warm, cozy bed.

"Come, come," Miles patted the bed, "I’ll sleep here tonight."

Eliza watched his fluid motions and silently twitched the corner of her mouth, "Isn’t this my bed? Why don’t you sleep in your main hall?"

Miles replied confidently, "The whole Volantis Palace is mine, this bed too. I can sleep wherever I want."

After closing the door, Eliza, struggling to keep her swollen eyes open, tried to make them look more normal, "Suit yourself."

Miles noticed him approaching, feeling slightly uneasy. It was his first time clinging to someone else’s bed, so to ease the awkwardness, he started looking for a topic, "Why do your eyes look even more swollen? Have you been crying again?"

Eliza, as if stepped on the tail, quickly replied, "No, go to sleep."

With that said, he blew out the candle and got under the covers.

After a long silence, Miles spoke again, "Do you want to hear a story before bed?"

Eliza: "Not interested."

Miles: "A long, long time ago, on a night when the moon hung high, suddenly—" He raised his volume.

Eliza looked at him, expressionless.

Miles turned and laughed, looking at Eliza, "Did I scare you?"

Little Eliza’s heart skipped a beat. The slight moonlight from the window spilled onto Miles’ face, giving him a silver halo.

He looked incredibly handsome.

Eliza thought that the so-called heavenly beings in books were no more than this.

"Stop staring at me, close your eyes, or they’ll be even more swollen tomorrow." Miles waved to Eliza.

"..."

It’s better if he didn’t speak, thought Eliza, unable to bear it, as he closed his eyes.

In the darkness, Miles slowly opened his eyes, looking at Eliza’s already sleeping profile softly saying, "Can I be your family from now on?"
