Mr. Fairchild's Rose: She is Wild and Proud-Chapter 174 - 68: The Man’s Face Darkens
Even if this person was one of the few he trusted.
He still didn’t dare to take the risk.
Just as Julian Fairchild hesitated, suddenly another call came in.
The number displayed was Henry Hughes.
His brow furrowed as he ended the current call and pressed the green button to answer.
"How is Maeve Lane now? Where are you?"
Julian’s tone was anxious even through the phone, and Henry Hughes must have noticed it too.
His tone was calm, almost unnaturally so.
"Maeve is fine, she’s resting now, don’t call again."
He was about to hang up after saying this, but Julian repeated patiently, "Where is she?"
A storm was brewing.
Henry Hughes didn’t soften his attitude due to Julian’s intense pressure, concisely saying, "Maeve is awake, heading to school now."
As soon as he finished, the phone emitted a busy tone.
Julian gripped his phone tightly; Henry Hughes wouldn’t joke about such matters. Since he’s already brought Maeve back to school, it means her condition is stable now.
He breathed a little sigh of relief, then opened his phone to call Maeve’s number, but she quickly hung up. 𝕗𝗿𝕖𝐞𝐰𝗲𝕓𝐧𝕠𝕧𝗲𝐥.𝚌𝐨𝚖
Julian glanced again at his phone and saw that Maeve had already responded to him.
Just two simple words, yet they instantly calmed his heart.
[I’m fine.]
Julian quickly left the hospital and hailed a cab back to school.
After arriving at Aurelia University, he couldn’t wait to see Maeve and persisted in making several calls before finally getting through.
But the person who spoke was Henry Hughes.
"Why is it you? Where’s Maeve? I want to see her."
Henry Hughes replied, "She’s still not feeling well, her phone is with me."
"...Get lost, I want Maeve to take the call." Julian’s voice grew colder.
"Give it to me."
Julian heard Maeve’s voice, his whole body instinctively tensed, but his voice softened considerably, as if afraid of scaring her, "Are you feeling alright?"
"Mm, I’m fine."
"I’m worried about you... Let me take you to see a friend of mine, he’s quite skilled..."
Maeve replied decisively, "No need, it’s just a minor issue."
Julian reluctantly compromised, his voice low, "I want to see you."
There was a moment of silence on the other end before she said, "I want to rest."
"How about tomorrow then?"
Maeve finally said, "Okay."
The man’s tense body finally relaxed a bit.
After the call ended, Julian stood by the roadside holding his phone, with a strange flicker of panic crossing his heart.
This time, Maeve seemed somehow different.
It seemed... he missed something important.
...
Julian’s intuition was indeed correct.
The next day, Maeve did come, but besides her was Henry Hughes.
She looked at Julian and said, "Now that you see I’m fine, you can be at ease, right?"
Julian’s gaze remained fixed on Maeve. Even with Henry Hughes by her side, he couldn’t spare a glance elsewhere.
"What did the doctor say when you took her to the hospital that day?"
"He said she might be a bit tired recently, so it’s hypoglycemia," Maeve half-truthfully replied, "I know my body well, it’s nothing serious."
Seeing Maeve’s rosy cheeks and hearing her strong voice, Julian’s long-held sense of dread finally eased.
"How could you forget to bring sugar?" Julian nonchalantly walked up to her, took her hand, and handed her a small glass bottle almost identical to the one she always carried, filled with candy, "Don’t you like the lime flavor?"
He looked into her eyes and said softly, "I had someone go buy some for you."
Maeve glanced at the familiar candy packaging and glass bottle, and a complex emotion flashed within her. She moved her lips, "Thank you."
The manufacturer of this candy was almost going out of business, yet somehow Julian managed to have it bought, undoubtedly putting a lot of thought into it.
Julian’s voice was concerned, "Would you like to eat some first... I’ll remind you in the future."
The delicate glass bottle reflected a faint light in Maeve’s pale palm, and even had a post-it attached considerately.
On it, in firm, bold strokes, was written—
[Don’t overdo it, just one at a time]
And a smaller line, [If the candy owner feels unwell, please feed her one, call me: xxxxxxxxxxx]
Even though she only had it for a moment, the words seemed etched into Maeve’s heart, memorized in a glance.
Henry Hughes glanced at Julian, and seeing him like this, Henry felt a strange sense of pity for him.
