Chapter 42 - 42: Did You See His Face Clearly?

The trail of blood slithered along the stair railing on the second floor, guiding them toward its source.

A man lay motionless in a pool of blood. His face was so mangled that he was unrecognizable. He was as dead as could be.

The stench of fresh blood filled the air, making Chantelle instinctively cover her mouth and nose.

Calvin crouched down and quickly examined the body. Then, he returned to Chantelle's side and whispered in her ear.

"Ms. Chantelle, the body is still warm. That means the killer is probably still here."

Her heart pounded as she processed his words.

"Since he's dead, any clues are gone. We should get out of here first," Calvin added.

Chantelle understood immediately.

"Okay, let's go," she straightened up and pretended to leave, speaking loudly as she turned away.

They noticed a closed room just a few steps away—the nearest room to the victim on the second floor. If the murderer hadn't escaped yet, this would be the perfect hiding spot.

Chantelle calmly walked downstairs as if nothing had happened.

Calvin stayed behind, silently positioning himself by the door.

Just as Chantelle reached the bottom step, the sound of a struggle erupted upstairs.

Glass shattered.

A man suddenly leaped from the second floor.

He grabbed onto the massive crystal chandelier in the living room, swung down, and landed on the floor. Without looking back, he rolled and bolted out of the villa.

Chantelle rushed after him, but by the time she reached outside, he had already disappeared without a trace.

Calvin's hand was bleeding, but he kept chasing after the man frantically.

He didn't care about his injury. All he could think about was Chantelle.

His heart nearly stopped when the man ran downstairs.

"Ms. Chantelle, are you okay?" he asked urgently.

"I'm fine," she said. "He ran off the moment he landed. You're hurt. It's not safe to stay here anymore. Let's go back first."

Chantelle noticed Calvin's bleeding hand. She instantly tore off one of her bandages and wrapped it around his wound.

The two then walked out of the villa together.

"I was useless. I let him get away," Calvin said, feeling guilty for the man's escape.

"Did you see his face clearly?" Chantelle asked.

"I didn't. He was wearing a mask," Calvin replied. "But he had a tattoo on his left hand. It looked familiar..."

"I see. Look into it carefully and find out who he is," she instructed. "Do you think the person who was killed upstairs was Felix?"

"I have no idea," Calvin admitted. "His face was completely mutilated. It could be anyone."

"You're right," Chantelle said. "Felix was hiding for a long time. He wouldn't be taken down so easily... Call our team to clean up the scene. We still have a long way to go."

"Understood, Ms. Chantelle."

When Chantelle settled into the car, Calvin reached for the ignition.

But before he could start the engine, Chantelle suddenly stopped him.

"Hide. Someone's coming."

As Chantelle finished speaking, several cars pulled up in front of the villa.

She carefully adjusted the seat's angle, peered out the window at the people outside, and immediately spotted the most notable man in the crowd.

Daniel!

What was he doing here?

Fortunately, Chantelle had asked Calvin to park the car behind the green belt before they entered the villa. Otherwise, they would have been discovered by now.

It would be difficult to explain their presence if they happened to run into them.

"Ms. Chantelle, is that Mr. Wilson? Could he also be investigating the old man's death?"

"Perhaps," Chantelle replied somewhat perfunctorily.

She couldn't understand Daniel's methods.

Was he investigating this case as well?

Why?!

Hadn't he insisted that she was the murderer?

Chantelle's thoughts were muddled with confusion.

Daniel might have confirmed that the person inside was dead and soon left with his men.

She and Calvin waited a moment longer before quietly driving away.

Unsurprisingly, they were being followed as soon as they exited the villa area.

Calvin's hand was still bleeding profusely, the blood dripping onto the steering wheel, and his condition became increasingly dire.

Two black SUVs trailed them relentlessly, making it clear they had no intention of letting them escape.

Chantelle studied the electronic map in her hand, quickly formulating an escape plan.

"There's a tunnel one mile ahead—that's where we lose them."

"Okay!"

Calvin tightened his grip on the steering wheel and stepped hard on the gas pedal.

The car sped forward, entering the tunnel as planned.

The stealth cloak activated, and their vehicle had become completely invisible when they emerged on the other side.

Instead of maintaining its previous speed, the car gradually slowed down and made a sharp turn onto a secluded side road.

Chantelle finally exhaled a sigh of relief as she watched the two pursuing SUVs race past, oblivious to their sudden disappearance.

The stealth cloak wore off quickly. Their car changed from white to black as the effect faded.

Russell was already there when they arrived at Western Hill Villa, looking anxious.

When he saw them, he rushed over and exclaimed, "Boss, are you okay? You almost gave me a heart attack!"

"I'm fine," Chantelle assured him. "But Calvin is injured. Help him with his wounds."

Russell immediately sprang into action. "You guys, take Mr. Jones and treat his wound immediately!"

Then, he gently grabbed Chantelle's uninjured arm and turned to the doctors and nurses waiting nearby.

Chantelle pulled her arm free from his grip and sank onto the sofa, completely drained.

Russell followed her, crouched beside her, and began massaging her legs skillfully.

"Boss, I heard you ran into an assassin at the hospital. Did you see who it was? Just tell me, and I'll hunt him down!"

He had only been away for a short time, yet someone dared to cause trouble on his turf and even hurt his boss. That guy must have a death wish!

"It was the same person who tampered with the car," Chantelle said. "Stay out of this. I'll handle it myself."

"Boss!" Russell protested. He thought it was a little unfair.

"You just focus on looking after Rai. How is he today?"

"Rai is fine," Russell said. "When he woke up, he kept looking around, probably searching for you. But when he realized you weren't there, he went back to sleep. His body is almost fully healed, but the wound on his face will need multiple surgeries to recover completely."
