Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Jojo’s New Home (I)

Kael slowly climbed up the summit while carrying Jojo and Sisi in his arms. He didn’t feel tired at all after accepting his curse again. In fact, he was always in peak condition no matter what happened, which was one of the reasons he had never lost a single battle, even when facing one hundred enemies alone.

Yet, the only time he ever felt exhausted was when he fell asleep.

Because every time he did, he would meet his fated mate in his dreams, and his body would writhe in agony, as if the Moon Goddess herself were punishing him for severing the bond she had preordained.

"Daddy, why is it so high?" Jojo asked. He looked down and paled when he realized how far they were from the palace below.

Jojo quickly buried his face against Sisi’s shoulder, hugging her even tighter in fear.

"Don’t be scared. I won’t let you fall," Kael said. "My den is at the top of the summit so I can watch over the kingdom and its surroundings, in case any daring beastman tribes attempt an invasion."

"But Daddy, what should Sisi and I do if we want to go down?" Jojo asked nervously. "I’m scared we’ll fall."

...

Now that he thought about it, it was impractical to constantly climb up and down the summit whenever Jojo or Sisi wanted to come and go.

However, he didn’t want Jojo staying in the palace below either. In his mind, the summit was the safest place for his son.

Sisi noticed his distress immediately. He truly wore his thoughts on his sleeve, and she couldn’t help but chuckle.

"What’s funny?" Kael asked.

"Nothing," Sisi shook her head. "Don’t worry. I’ve been thinking of a way to move up and down the summit conveniently without using too much energy. But I’ll need your help with the materials, and your permission, since this is your kingdom."

Kael frowned. He didn’t respond right away.

He continued climbing, and once they reached the den, he finally set them down. Jojo immediately rushed inside, eager to explore his new home.

Sisi stayed by Kael’s side as he finally asked, "What do you need my permission for? I warned you not to cause trouble, Sisi."

"Why do you always assume I’ll cause trouble?" Sisi sighed.

"You freed my captive," Kael replied flatly. "That would’ve been your death sentence if Jojo hadn’t begged me to spare you."

"You’re still accusing me?" Sisi shrugged, feigning innocence. "I told you. I didn’t do it. And you can’t accuse me without solid proof. Anyway, I need your permission because I’ll have to use my power to create a facility so Jojo and I can go up and down the summit without relying on you."

"No," Kael rejected immediately. "Using your power here is too dangerous."

"Are you afraid your subjects will talk behind your back because you allowed a witch to stay in your kingdom?" Sisi asked. She didn’t mean it provocatively, but it sounded that way to Kael.

"I’m not afraid," Kael replied. "They can say whatever they want. In the end, none of it matters. But they will talk about you, and I don’t know if you can handle that. Beastmen generally distrust witches because they witches often kidnap cubs."

That wasn’t the whole truth.

What he didn’t say was that he feared Sisi would attract too much attention. She was already beautiful as she was. What if other men started seeing her as a potential mate?

Of course, if Sisi fell in love with another man... then he couldn’t watch over her! What if she was cooking another trouble that he couldn’t predict like before?

He was determined to keep her by his side no matter what for as long as Jojo still saw her as a mother figure.

Sisi, meanwhile, wasn’t even certain she was a witch. She had never performed any heinous rituals in her life.

But her strange power had only manifested when she was consumed by rage toward Mr. Piker. Being a witch was simply the only explanation she had... for now.

’Maybe I should ask the old tree who claims to be my grandmother when I meet her again in my dreams,’ Sisi thought.

Keeping her calm expression, she said, "If you don’t want that, then why not assign me a small hut somewhere in the palace? I can manage just fine."

"And what about Jojo?"

"Jojo?" Sisi glanced at the boy, who was busy exploring the den. "I think it’s better if he stays here with you. You’re his father, after all. He can visit me during the day and rest with you at night."

Kael followed her gaze. Jojo was marveling at how warm the den was despite being at the summit.

It had always been his habit.

Whenever Kael found a new den, Jojo would eagerly explore it, looking for something interesting to play with.

It was how he entertained himself during the years when it was just the two of them, hiding and surviving. 𝐟𝗿𝐞𝚎𝚠𝐞𝚋𝕟𝐨𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝕔𝕠𝚖

"I think he’s more attached to you right now," Kael said quietly. "I don’t even know if he can sleep without you beside him."

"He can," Sisi reassured him. "Don’t you remember how he slept on your lap before? Don’t be too hard on yourself, Kael. He’s still your son... as long as you treat him like one."

Kael’s lips twitched as he suppressed a smile.

She was right.

Jojo was still the same son he had raised for four years.

"Besides," Sisi added with a teasing grin, "I don’t think us sleeping in the same den would be a good idea. Your concubine might get the wrong impression of us."

Kael’s faint smile vanished instantly at the mention of Ruela and her shameful display in front of Jojo.

"Don’t talk about her," he said coldly. "What she did was disgusting. And the rest of my court isn’t blameless either, especially Vestor, who allowed her to appear so provocatively in front of my son."
