Chapter 73: Chapter 73: Morning Hunt with Demon Daddy (II)

"Sisi! Sisi, let’s go!" Jojo resisted being pulled along by Kael without Sisi at his side. He was used to being watched over by either Uncle Marik or Sisi whenever he hunted, and their presence gave him the confidence to catch good prey.

"Coming," Sisi said, suppressing the unease in her heart as she walked toward Jojo.

Kael saw this and clicked his tongue in annoyance. It seemed this witch’s presence was far too ingrained in Jojo’s mind, to the point that the boy would grow uneasy if they were separated for even a second.

Kael scanned their surroundings, trying to detect the body heat of animals Jojo could hunt. Then he pointed ahead. "There’s a squirrel in that tree. You can try hunting it."

Jojo blinked at the instruction, then pouted. "Daddy, I’m not a kid anymore! I don’t need to hunt a squirrel!"

"But you are a kid. You’re not even five yet," Kael pointed out.

"B-but I can hunt bigger prey! You can ask Sisi!" Jojo insisted.

Kael turned toward Sisi, who smiled faintly. "He can hunt a fawn almost daily. A hare is an easy catch for him, and he caught his first yearling two days ago—in his beastman form."

"Really?" Kael shifted his gaze back to Jojo, who nodded vigorously.

"I’m a big boy now, Daddy!" Jojo declared.

"...All right, then. There’s a group of deer over there," Kael said, pointing west. "Try to catch a yearling. A fawn will do as well. Don’t push yourself. If you’re tired, just stop."

"But I promised to hunt for you every day!" Jojo puffed out his chest proudly. "I’ll hunt two yearlings today. One for you and one for Sisi! Don’t worry, I’ve got this!"

Kael couldn’t help but smile at Jojo’s confidence. Nine months ago, Jojo’s first hunt had been a hare. But in truth, Kael had stood in front of it, intimidating the poor creature until it nearly had a heart attack. Only then had Jojo managed to catch it after running around the field for ages.

He hadn’t expected his son to grow so quickly in just nine months. It made him feel a little sad—not having witnessed Jojo’s progress with his own eyes.

’Instead, that bastard tiger had the privilege of seeing my son’s first fawn and yearling,’ Kael cursed inwardly, feeling robbed of countless moments in Jojo’s life.

Unaware of the crimson-eyed demon’s thoughts, Jojo dashed toward the area Kael had pointed out, leaving Sisi and Kael behind.

Kael was about to follow when Sisi suddenly grabbed his hand, forcing the Beast King to glance over his shoulder and meet her gaze.

"It’s fine," she said. "You don’t need to get too close. He can hunt just fine."

"I still need to watch closely. There’s a stag in there, and their antlers can be dangerous," Kael replied.

"I know," Sisi sighed. "But your aura is terrifying. The deer will sense danger and run away before Jojo can even reach them. Don’t worry, I can control my plants as long as I can see them. I’ll protect Jojo that way."

Kael weighed his options and decided Sisi was right. He stayed by her side, and together they watched Jojo’s hunt.

At first, Kael worried Jojo might not even manage to catch a fawn. He was too young and inexperienced. He might even get trampled by the larger deer.

But Jojo proved to be far cleverer than Kael had expected.

He first shifted into his wolf form. Being small, with fur that blended perfectly into the snow, he became nearly impossible for the deer to detect.

He stalked a yearling through the snow, and once he found the perfect moment, he leapt—shifting into his beastman form midair and catching the yearling off guard.

Jojo landed on its back and bit down hard on its neck, sinking both his fangs and claws deep.

The yearling thrashed wildly. The other fawns scattered, while a stag noticed the danger and prepared to attack.

Kael’s breath hitched. He was about to rush forward and kill the stag when Sisi tightened her grip on his arm and shook her head.

"Watch how he handles it," she said.

"Are you crazy? Do you want him to get killed?!" Kael snapped.

"Have a little faith in your son," Sisi replied calmly.

For some reason, her unwavering trust slightly eased his panic. On top of that, as a cursed being, Kael could move at unimaginable speed if necessary.

Thus, he decided to wait.

Jojo saw the stag charging at him with fully developed antlers, but he wasn’t afraid. He shifted back into his wolf form in an instant, leaping off the yearling and dodging the attack, causing the stag to slam headfirst into a tree.

Jojo immediately pounced again, shifting back into his beastman form midair, and finished the kill.

Kael was stunned by Jojo’s cleverness and remarkable control over both his wolf and beastman forms. While all beastmen could shift, many required preparation, and some avoided shifting altogether because it was troublesome.

On top of that, toddlers usually had poor control over their transformations, preferring to remain in one form until they grew older.

Jojo dragged the yearling that was larger than his own body, through the snow toward Kael and Sisi. Beaming proudly, he announced, "Sisi! I got one!"

"See?" Sisi smiled, her eyes never leaving Jojo. "He’s a talented hunter. Even at such a young age, he knows how to read the situation and use his size and fur color to his advantage."

"How did you teach him?" Kael asked.

"It’s mostly survival," Sisi replied. "I can’t hunt like he can, and I prefer vegetables, fruits, and mushrooms. So Jojo had to adapt. As for technique... Marik taught him most of it."

"Hmph. Nonsense," Kael scoffed. "That bastard must’ve used an iron hand to teach him."

He refused to admit that the damned tiger had helped his son—partly out of pride.

He should have been the one to teach Jojo all this. But because they’d been separated, he’d missed one of the most important periods of his son’s life.
