Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Arguing with The Wolf (I)

If they were truly back in the old cave and everything else had merely been a long, horrible dream, that would have been the best-case scenario.

But then Sisi saw a looming figure sitting beside the fire, staring daggers at her as if he wanted to kill her.

The fire casted a huge shadow behind him, making him even more intimidating

’So it’s not a dream,’ Sisi sighed. ’But at least Jojo is still safe. That’s all that matters.’

She gently caressed Jojo’s back, and the little wolf cub stopped muttering in his sleep.

Kael noticed this but said nothing.

However, his gaze became even more venomous than before, clearly showing his irritation that Jojo was more obedient to her than to him.

Sisi stared back at him, her eyes filled with suspicion, but she was far too weak to stand up and run again.

Besides, there was no point in escaping when this wolf could capture her at any moment.

So she leaned back against the cave wall and stared blankly at the bonfire, waiting for whatever fate awaited her—even if that fate was death just like what he described before.

Sisi never thought that she would die in such a gruesome way, but her life had never been easy to begin with, so it only took a while for her to settle down and simply accepted it.

Anyway, she had a good life for almost a year with Jojo after she escaped the farm, she felt it was worth exchanging a gruesome death in the end.

Kael had been waiting for this damned witch to say something after waking up. Perhaps she would beg for mercy, or perhaps she would try to attack him again. Countless scenarios played through his mind.

But when she merely leaned against the wall and did absolutely nothing, he found himself at a loss.

He waited... and waited... until he could no longer endure the silence.

"Got anything to say after kidnapping my son, you damned witch?" he demanded.

Sisi frowned. "What are you talking about? Kidnapping? A witch?"

"You can control plants, but you’re not a faerie. That means you can only be a witch," Kael concluded coldly.

Sisi fell silent for a moment, startled by the accusation. If she wasn’t a faerie, then... was she truly a witch?

She remembered the frightening stories she’d heard as a child—witches who kidnapped children and ate them, seduced men, and murdered pregnant women.

"I don’t know whether I’m a witch," Sisi said quietly, "But I’ve never performed any rituals. And as for kidnapping—"

"I found Jojo in the horse shed where I lived at the beginning of autumn. His body was battered, his bones fractured. I nursed him back to health, and then we escaped the barn and fled into the forest."

"It’s easy for a witch to lie," Kael sneered.

"Then ask Jojo yourself," Sisi replied.

"How am I supposed to believe anything he says when you’ve clearly been using witchcraft on him?" Kael pressed on.

With every accusation, Sisi felt her dignity trampled further.

She wasn’t a saint, but she loved Jojo and raised him as her own son. How dare this crimson-eyed demon question her integrity and poison Jojo’s innocence?

"Then what about you?" Sisi shot back. "You claim to be Jojo’s father, yet everything you’ve done so far has only terrified him. Frankly, I’m far more convinced that you’re just a demon wearing his father’s face."

Now it was Kael’s turn to be offended.

Didn’t she already know about his curse? Judging by her closeness to Marik, she likely had some idea.

"I’ve been cursed," Kael said coldly. "These eyes are part of that curse. Aside from that, I am still the same."

"And how am I supposed to believe that?" Sisi snapped. "Maybe it’s the curse speaking, not Jojo’s real father."

She threw his own logic back at him, making sure he felt the sting of baseless accusation.

"You—! Grrh! I should’ve known a witch’s mouth is poisonous!"

"I never knew Jojo’s father accused people as casually as throwing stones," Sisi sneered. "Do you know what happens to those accused of witchcraft in my town? They’re burned at the stake in the town square."

She continued with a grin, "Oh, right. I forgot. I’ll be executed and my head displayed in your kingdom instead. Your Majesty, are you sure you’re a beastman... and not just a beast?"

She had nothing left to fear. Her life was already in his hands. Offending him now or later would change nothing.

This was the first time a woman had rendered Kael speechless.

The female beastmen in his kingdom were usually timid and shallow, vying for his attention with beauty that never caught his eye to begin with.

This woman, however, possessed beauty that caught his attention unabashedly—and venom that even Kael wasn’t immune of. She was like a flower that could only be observed from afar, never touched.

"If you beg for leniency, I might consider sparing your life," Kael offered.

The might, however, was never real.

"Oh? How generous," Sisi replied with an enchanting smile, though her eyes flickered with pure sarcasm. "Then, oh mighty Beast King, would you kindly let Marik the tiger and Jojo the white wolf leave? I don’t mind being executed, as long as they can escape to Jing Forest and start a new life as father and son."

The contemptuous smile on Kael’s face vanished instantly.

He rose in a flash, releasing a suppressive dark aura that would make ordinary beings choke and fall to their knees.

But Sisi remained unaffected.

She merely looked up at him, still smiling, her eyes brimming with mockery.

"I’ve met a man like you before," she said coldly. "A man who liked to play king. He spoke sweet words just to toy with me, delighted in watching the suffering of those weaker than him."

She met Kael’s eyes unflinchingly.

"That man didn’t deserve to be called a father," Sisi finished with a mocking grin. "And neither do you."
