Mommy Wolf: Raise A Cub, Claimed By His Beast Daddy-Chapter 226: Ignite the War (VI)
Vestor took a deep breath as he was secretly relieved that the Beast King wasn’t here. Had he been present and heard the arrogant tone this merchant had, he would’ve killed him on the spot.
"Our King is currently away, but should be back soon," Vestor replied. "I am Vestor, the national advisor and a stand-in for matters in the kingdom. You’re not the first human merchant to visit, thus I am inclined to think that you’d want to sell something to us, right?"
"Yes, I’ve brought a few valuable and unique items with me. But for now, may I be given a place to rest? I don’t think this kingdom has an inn for visitors though..."
"We don’t have an inn for visitors because we’re not accepting any visitors at the moment. But there is an empty house for a government official right next to the city square. The guards will escort you later," Vestor said. "As for the goods..."
Vestor was about to reject them since their king wasn’t here to assess whether he wanted to buy something or not.
But then Vestor remembered the flower ring on Mistress Sisi’s hand and realized that maybe the Beast King would be happy to buy more jewelry as a present for Mistress Sisi once they got betrothed later.
"You can bring the goods by tomorrow morning. It is very late at night and the treasurer has left the palace," Vestor said. "Please remember that we are only interested in unique jewelry and trinkets. We won’t accept food or herbal medicine, since we have plenty."
The envoy almost couldn’t hide his frown hearing all the explanations coming from this owl beastman.
He was far too normal for his expectations, because the envoy expected these beastmen to greedily attack him by now. In fact, he was more than ready to die!
However, he stayed true to his mission. Since he didn’t get any big reaction from the beastmen in this kingdom, he decided to report everything to Crown Prince Ludwig once he was escorted out of the kingdom.
Once the envoy settled inside the government house that was far more luxurious than those in Barion Kingdom, he wrote everything that he had experienced so far and sent it to the crown prince using a pigeon.
Once the pigeon arrived at the crown prince’s camp, Ludwig read it, frowned, and then ordered his men to call Marik.
Once Marik entered the prince’s camp, he was surprised by the expression on the crown prince’s face. He looked doubtful and gave him a scrutinizing gaze.
"Are you sure that you got attacked by the soldiers coming from this kingdom?" Crown Prince Ludwig asked.
"I am sure, Your Highness. I passed through the Beast Kingdom and curiously wanted to check it since it’s the first time I saw a kingdom in the middle of Roc Forest. But when I told the guards at the gate that I am a merchant, those soldiers suddenly attacked my caravan."
Marik sounded very convincing, but the crown prince didn’t trust him easily since the report from his envoy differed a lot.
"Then why is my envoy being treated fairly there? He hasn’t been attacked and was given a good place to stay for the night. He’s also provided with proper food," Crown Prince Ludwig said. "On top of that, the advisor said that my envoy could sell jewelry and unique trinkets in the morning. They seem very civilized, unlike the ones in your story."
"Advisor? Not the Beast King himself?" Marik asked.
"The envoy wrote in his letter that the Beast King is still away, so the advisor is in charge until he returns," Ludwig replied. "But seeing how his subordinate can conduct himself properly, I have a good feeling about the king. He must be a wise king who can properly teach his subordinates, since beastmen are naturally aggressive."
’Heh, of course everyone listens to that cursed bastard. Beastmen worship strength over everything else. They are just scared that their strongest king will kick them away if they dare to disobey or make a mistake,’ Marik sneered in his heart.
Despite the unfavorable situation, he didn’t show any panic. He had to make his story convincing, so he shook his head.
"I am not lying, Your Highness. At first, they did allow me to get closer to the main gate, and once my caravan was inside the kingdom, they finally attacked. Maybe we should wait until tomorrow morning to see if your envoy can return safely?"
Crown Prince Ludwig gave Marik a scrutinizing look but nodded in the end as he thought that was a logical thing to do.
"Alright, I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt for now. But if my envoy returns safely, then you’ll be thrown into jail for a false report."
"I stay true to my word, Your Highness. I am ready to be imprisoned if you think that I’ve given a false report. But please wait until tomorrow morning before giving your judgment."
"Hm, you can go back now," Crown Prince Ludwig said.
Marik excused himself and "returned" to his tent. It was already late at night, and Leah was already asleep.
But Marik knew better than to sleep in this crucial situation. He checked his surroundings, and once he made sure that most guards were asleep, he slipped out of the camp and headed to the Beast Kingdom.
Marik was naturally strong and fast, probably second only to Kael. He leaped over the wall and jumped from one roof to another silently in the dead of the night.
He could detect the scent of the envoy because humans had a different scent compared to beastmen. It didn’t help that most of the humans from Barion Kingdom wore strong perfume.
Once he located the envoy’s bedroom, he entered through the ceiling and swiftly took down the two human guards standing outside by snapping their necks before they could make a sound.
Marik looked down at the guards and scoffed.
"Why does that cursed bastard have to leave during such a crucial time like this? Now I have to stain my hands just to ignite the war."
