Mommy Wolf: Raise A Cub, Claimed By His Beast Daddy-Chapter 187: Ruela’s Reward (II)
"But with that title comes a new responsibility," Sisi continued as she slowly turned her head toward the stunned Ruela. "Lady of the Dawn will have an obligation to spread the goodness of the Crown Prince to the masses, making sure that his ascension will be smooth sailing. She is also obliged to continue supporting the Crown Prince once he ascends."
"In a way, Lady of the Dawn will work as Jojo’s representative to the masses. As long as you are doing your job, you shall be paid a fair wage for your work," Sisi stated. "I know being a representative is a difficult matter, so I’ll also bestow upon you a few personal soldiers to serve as your bodyguards and a few servants to take care of your new house."
Sisi knew that her statement would raise questions since she hadn’t talked to Kael about this. So she added, "Tell Vestor to immediately report this to the Beast King before the morning court starts, so he can give his approval. If he doesn’t agree on something, then tell him to meet me, because I think Ruela deserves all of this as a reward for saving Jojo’s life."
"Understood, Mistress!" Garou replied immediately. "Then I shall find Vestor right now. I think he’s still working on a few documents in his office. He’s an owl, after all."
"Wait, before you do that—" Sisi paused for a moment and stared at Garou, then said, "—you will lead the soldiers who will be bestowed upon Ruela, which means you’ll be living as her bodyguard temporarily."
Garou’s eyes widened, and the ever-obedient panther protested immediately, "Mistress, I’ve been tasked to protect you with all my life!"
"Protecting the Crown Prince’s representative is also difficult work, and you’ll gain more experience dealing with people around you. You won’t be so rash in speaking your mind," Sisi replied calmly. "Do not fret, it is temporary. You’ll have to train one of the soldiers there to replace your position within a year."
Garou was still annoyed that he had to follow another woman instead of spending his time with Mistress Sisi.
But since it was an order, he couldn’t do anything.
At least it wasn’t permanent, since he could return after a year.
"Then I’ll do everything as you wish, Mistress. Please excuse me."
With him gone, Ruela, who had been silent the whole time, finally voiced her concern.
"Sisi, are you sure it’s okay for Sir Garou to become my bodyguard?" Ruela asked.
"Why not? He’s very capable, and he can learn how to manage a group of soldiers outside the palace, right?"
"I... I just don’t think he likes me..." Ruela muttered. "I don’t want to be protected by a man who despises me."
"Despise is a strong word, and I don’t see it that way. He seems to be a little obsessed with his new position as my bodyguard, that’s all," Sisi hinted.
She had seen the young panther’s unmistakable infatuation, and there was nothing she could do about it.
But it would be great to redirect that infatuation toward someone else instead. After all, Garou was still a hot-blooded young man. Even if he was an ’adult’ by beastman standards, his mind was still filled with idealism about power and love.
"With this, I’ve fulfilled my promise to you, Ruela. You’ll be able to keep your head high as you leave the palace. Your clan will not despise you either, since you bring them honor for protecting the Crown Prince.
You will live in a well-off house in the capital city, and your safety is guaranteed. This is the best I can give you," Sisi explained. "Though the promise comes earlier than I intended. I was thinking about putting you to work for the entire spring at least."
"I-I can’t stand this palace anymore. It’s too scary," Ruela said.
"I know," Sisi sighed. "It’s fine. Besides, you still have to spread the word about Jojo, so your job is not done."
Ruela nodded. Spreading good words about Jojo was an easy job because she genuinely liked the boy.
When she saw Jojo coming down from the summit with bruises everywhere just to see Sisi, Ruela realized that Jojo was a precious and honest boy who needed protection.
He was innocent, and that was for the better, because he was too young to know about palace politics.
"Thank you for helping me, Sisi..." Ruela lowered her head slightly out of respect. "I didn’t expect you to be so kind to me after I tried to antagonize you before..."
Sisi chuckled. "I never saw you as competition because I don’t really want this position to begin with. I’m just doing everything so far for Jojo’s safety."
"Besides, I know that you were being manipulated by Leah. It’s clear if you take a good look at her reaction even once," Sisi added. "She was clearly happy seeing you get humiliated in front of the Beast King."
Ruela clenched her fists as she remembered how Leah tried to persuade her into killing Jojo and Sisi. "I never knew that I raised a snake. I genuinely saw her as my sister from another mother."
"This is a lesson I want to teach you, Ruela," Sisi said. "Now that you are Jojo’s spokesperson, you need to be more careful and not trust anyone easily."
"I understand," Ruela nodded. She stared at the wise Mistress.
It hadn’t been long since they met, and Ruela could already see the regal aura coming from Sisi.
She was naturally charismatic, and to have her managing the palace would be a blessing for the Beast Kingdom... at least in Ruela’s view.
Since Sisi gave her a second chance to live, she made a silent promise to aid Jojo, just so she could see the boy ascend the throne with cheers from his people.
Ruela finally excused herself once she was done and returned to the maid’s quarters. But Diane stayed, as she had something to say.
"What’s on your mind, Diane?" Sisi asked.
