Chapter 172: Chapter 172: Death-Row Convict Escape (II)

General Pell and Garou were resting in the small military barrack at the corner of the palace, reserved for the generals and soldiers who were in charge of guarding the palace each week.

When Garou was about to be killed by the Beast King, General Pell genuinely thought that he would be guarding the palace alone after burying Garou’s body near the military barrack.

But this young man’s luck was good. Despite his disrespect, he was given a second chance after the Mistress saved him.

However, Pell sensed something was wrong with the way Garou looked at the Mistress before.

So he asked, "What do you think of the Mistress, Garou?"

"Ah? Ohh..." Garou was caught off guard by the question. He contemplated for a moment before answering, "I think she is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life."

"Hm... that, I cannot deny," General Pell nodded. "But beauty is only skin-deep, Garou. Did you see how she handled that maid? She’s very logical in her judgment, which means she won’t be like those women who cry over an argument, sulk cutely, or love you tenderly. She’s... cold-hearted. I can sense it."

"I think everyone can sense that too," Garou replied. "But isn’t that what makes her even more fascinating? She’s beautiful, yet doesn’t mind shedding her beauty just to be menacing in front of a treacherous maid."

Garou looked up as he imagined Mistress Sisi’s warm smile and cold smile. It turned out he liked both.

"She is a perfect woman," Garou muttered, showing his unbridled admiration.

General Pell stared at him in horror. He shook his head and said, "I know you’re young and sometimes think and act recklessly, but you should know better than to like the Mistress, who will be our future queen. The Beast King will not hesitate—even if the Mistress pleads for your life—if you two are caught."

Garou turned toward General Pell and frowned. "General, I just admire her. Nothing more."

"That’s what you say, boy. But you’re at an age when your young blood is boiling hot. You might think it’s just admiration, but soon you’ll want more than that," General Pell sighed. "Keep this conversation between us. Don’t think about getting close to the Mistress. She will be the death of you."

Garou was a little offended that his colleague didn’t trust him, but he nodded anyway. General Pell was his mentor here, after all.

Besides, what was wrong with admiring beauty?

Garou grew up as a warrior, trained by his parents to fight with all his might so he could become a strong panther warrior once he came of age.

He never had time to think about women and love, and even after becoming a general in the Beast Kingdom, he still hadn’t thought about settling down. He believed he was still too young and preferred to dedicate his life to serving the Beast King.

So what was wrong with admiring beauty?

Surely, General Pell admired his wife’s beauty too. He married her and had several elephant beastman children together.

General Pell was about to close his eyes and rest after a long day when a soldier rushed into the barrack and reported, "General! There is an emergency!"

General Pell and Garou became alert immediately. After one surprise after another, they stared at the soldier intensely and asked, "What happened?"

The soldier seemed to have run a long distance and was catching his breath as he reported,"T-the prison wardens are dead!"

"Dead?!" Garou and General Pell exclaimed at the same time.

"Y-yes. They were struck in the chest and died instantly, and... and..."

"What about that treacherous maid?" Garou asked.

The soldier became visibly nervous and began to stammer. Sensing the urgency, General Pell snapped, "Speak clearly!"

"The convict has escaped, General!"

General Pell and Garou rushed to the underground prison the moment they heard that.

The entrance was surrounded by guards examining the dead prison wardens.

Garou crouched down to inspect one of the bodies and reported, "Just like the report said, they were struck by a powerful force in the chest. It was either a group of people who raided the prison, or a single but extremely powerful beastman."

Garou paused for a moment and added, "I think it’s just one person, General. If it’s more than one, the guards around the palace were bound to find them."

"But these wardens are still wearing metal armor. Can someone really strike through that armor for an instant kill?" General Pell asked.

"I’ve never seen anyone capable of that except the Beast King, General. But there’s no way our King would do this," Garou muttered. "Whoever attacked them... is not someone we should underestimate. We might not be his match."

"What are you saying?!" General Pell snapped. "We are the strongest generals of the Beast Kingdom! We can fight anyone except the Beast King!"

He was already ashamed after being overshadowed by Mistress Sisi’s decisiveness earlier.

If he reported to her that someone powerful had broken in and freed the convict, he might as well resign from his position.

"I’m not joking, General," Garou said firmly. "Maybe we can fight him in numbers, but I wouldn’t recommend confronting him alone."

"Then we’ll catch him and the convict before they escape!" General Pell declared. "They must still be inside the palace—or at least within the kingdom."

He turned and ordered his soldiers, "Form teams of three and search the entire palace. Notify the outer guards and tell them we’re looking for a young female wolf beastman who may still be roaming the streets."

"Seal all exits until morning," Garou added. "General, we must begin immediately. If we still can’t find them... I’ll report this to Mistress Sisi at dawn."

A heavy weight settled on General Pell’s shoulders.

He was a tough elephant beastman, but the thought of Mistress Sisi’s calm smile made cold sweat trickle down his back.

He didn’t want to face her after such a humiliating failure.

So when Garou volunteered, he simply nodded.

"Let’s focus on the search."
