Chapter 42: Going Home

"As much as I love to but it is getting late," Elaina pointed out.

"Oh," Marus said, rubbing the back of his neck as he chuckled. "Well, maybe next time. Do you want me to walk you to your home? I haven’t seen where you are staying."

"It’s fine, I can walk by myself. Idon’t want to disturb you any further," Elaina finished, her tone polite but a bit softer than before.

Marcus looked at her for a second.

Then he shook his head.

"No."

Elaina blinked.

"...No?"

Marcus nodded once, his expression calm but firm.

"No," he repeated. "I’m walking you home."

Elaina opened her mouth slightly, caught off guard by how direct he was.

"That’s not necessary," she said. "I’ve been walking these streets for years. I’ll be fine." 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

Marcus stepped a little closer, not enough to crowd her, but enough to make his point clear.

"I know you’ll be fine," he said. "That’s not the point."

Elaina frowned slightly.

"Then what is?"

Marcus held her gaze.

"It’s a date. It is my responsibility to make sure that you get home safe. What if there is a wyvern flying over the city again huh?"

"But you already took care of the wyverns," Elaina said.

"That’s not the point, okay. I am going to walk you home. There might be dangerous people around here who might harm you. You are beautiful so someone might get the wrong idea."

The words came out before Marcus could filter them.

Elaina froze.

"...What?"

Marcus realized it a second too late.

He cleared his throat lightly, but he didn’t take it back.

"I’m just saying," he continued, a bit more controlled this time. "You shouldn’t be walking alone this late."

Elaina stared at him for a moment, her cheeks slowly tinting.

"You just said I’m beautiful," she said, more quietly now.

Marcus didn’t look away.

"Yeah."

There was no hesitation.

No attempt to soften it.

Just a simple answer.

Elaina shifted slightly where she stood, her fingers brushing against the side of her skirt as she looked down for a second.

"...You’re really direct," she muttered.

Marcus shrugged.

"You asked."

"I didn’t," she said, but there was no real bite in it.

A small silence settled between them.

Then Elaina exhaled softly.

"...Fine," she said. "You can walk me home."

Marcus nodded once.

"Good."

They started walking.

The marketplace noise faded behind them as they moved into quieter streets. The lanterns along the road cast a warm glow over the stone path, stretching their shadows slightly with each step.

For a while, neither of them spoke.

Elaina kept her eyes forward, but there was a faint curve at the corner of her lips now, like she was still processing what he said.

Marcus walked beside her, hands relaxed at his sides, his pace matching hers without needing to think about it.

After a few steps, Elaina spoke again.

"...You say things like that often?" she asked.

"Like what?"

"...That."

Marcus glanced at her briefly.

"No."

Elaina looked at him.

"Then why say it now?"

Marcus thought about it for a second.

Then answered simply.

"Because it’s true."

Elaina looked away again.

"...You’re not making this easy," she said under her breath.

Marcus gave a small huff.

"Wasn’t trying to."

That earned a quiet laugh from her.

They turned down a narrower street, the houses here closer together, the noise from the main road almost gone. It felt calmer here. More personal.

Elaina slowed slightly.

"...It’s just ahead," she said.

Marcus nodded.

"Alright."

They walked the remaining distance at the same pace.

When they stopped in front of her house, Elaina turned to face him. The lantern light from the doorway fell across her, soft but enough to show her expression clearly.

"...This is it."

Marcus glanced at the house, then back at her. It was a two-storey medieval style house.

"You have a nice place here."

"It’s not much but yeah, that’s my house. Uhm, do you want to see the interior?" she asked.

"Woah, you are asking me to go inside your house? You shouldn’t just casually invite a man into your house, and most importantly if you are the only person there."

Elaina’s cheek reddened as she realized what she just said, but.

"But you are not the type of man who would do anything to me when alone right? Especially in a girl’s house."

Hearing that, Marcus rubbed the back of his neck, letting out a small breath.

"You really trust me that much?"

Elaina looked at him, still a bit flustered, but she didn’t back down.

"I do," she said. "If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have asked."

Marcus held her gaze for a second.

Then he nodded.

"...Alright."

Elaina stepped aside and pushed the door open wider.

"Come in."

Marcus walked past her and stepped inside.

The difference from outside was immediate.

The house was modest, but clean and organized. The air smelled faintly of wood and something sweet—maybe dried herbs or flowers placed somewhere inside. The floor was wooden, well-kept, with no loose boards or signs of neglect. A small table sat near the center of the room, with two chairs placed neatly around it. To the side, a shelf held a few books, some folded cloth, and small items that looked personal.

Nothing extravagant.

But it felt lived in.

Marcus glanced around slowly, taking it all in.

"This is nice," he said.

Elaina closed the door behind him and moved a few steps further inside.

"It’s simple," she replied. "I don’t really need much."

Marcus nodded.

"Still. It’s well kept."

Elaina smiled faintly at that, then gestured toward the table.

"You can sit if you want."

Marcus walked over to the sofa and sat.

Elaina moved to the side, setting her small belongings down before turning back to him.

"Do you want something to drink?" she asked.

Marcus shook his head.

"I’m good."

Elaina nodded and sat next to him. And there was silence between them. Just a man and a woman, sitting next to one another. Then they looked at one another.

Marcus truly admired how cute she is. And then, little by little, he didn’t realize that his face was inching closer to her face.

Elaina noticed it.

At first, she didn’t move.

Her breath hitched slightly, her fingers tightening just a little against the fabric of her skirt. She could feel how close he was getting now—close enough that she could see the details of his face more clearly than before.

"Marcus," she whispered.

Marcus stopped for a brief second.

Their faces were already inches apart.

Close enough that he could feel her breath.

He didn’t pull away.

"You want me to stop?" he asked quietly.

She shook her head.

"No."

That was enough.

Marcus closed the distance.

Their lips met.

Just a soft, careful contact at first, like both of them were still making sure this was real.

Elaina’s eyes closed.

Her hand lifted slightly, hesitating for a moment before resting lightly against his chest. She could feel his heartbeat through the fabric, getting faster.

Marcus adjusted slightly, deepening the kiss just enough to make it real.

A few seconds passed.

Then they slowly pulled apart, a bit of saliva bridged their lips.

"Did we just kiss?" Marcus whispered.

"We did..."

"Want to continue?"

Elaina simply nodded her head.
