Chapter 28: Challenge

In the lobby room of the adventurer’s guild where adventurers filled the space already. Marcus once again was the center of attention.

He did not mind their stares and went straight to Elaina who smiled at him.

Just as he was about to get near her, someone blocked him.

"Hold it for a second," the man said, stepping right into his path.

Marcus stopped.

He looked at him once.

Broad frame. Shaved head. Heavy shoulders. The same man from the verification team.

Bren Korr.

Up close, the difference in size was clear. Bren stood wider, thicker, built for direct fights. Marcus looked lighter in comparison, less imposing at a glance.

Bren rested the handle of his axe against his shoulder and tilted his head slightly.

"You’re Marcus, right?" he said.

"What do you need?" he asked.

Bren gave a short breath through his nose.

"I’ll ask it straight," he said. "You’re the one who wiped out the wyvern nest?"

A few nearby adventurers shifted closer, attention snapping toward them.

Marcus held his gaze.

"Yes."

"What do you need?" he asked.

Bren gave a short breath through his nose.

"I’ll ask it straight," he said. "You’re the one who wiped out the wyvern nest?"

A few nearby adventurers shifted closer, attention snapping toward them.

Marcus held his gaze.

"Yes."

"Sir Bren," Elaina intervened, stepping out from behind the counter.

Her voice was firm, not raised, but it carried enough to cut through the noise.

"This is not the place for that," she said. "Stand down."

Bren didn’t move.

He kept his eyes on Marcus.

"Stay out of it," he said.

The tone shifted the air.

A few of the nearby adventurers glanced at each other. That wasn’t how people usually spoke to her inside the guild.

Elaina took another step forward.

"I’m not asking," she said. "You are inside guild grounds. You know the rules."

Bren let out a short breath.

"Yeah," he said. "And I also know what we saw out there."

"That’s already been verified," Elaina replied. "The matter is closed."

"Not for me."

"Then take it up with the Guildmaster," she said. "Not here."

Bren finally looked at her.

For a second, the room went quieter.

Then he shook his head slightly.

"You’re a receptionist," he said. "Handle the desk."

The words landed harder than anything before.

A few people shifted uncomfortably.

Lira’s expression tightened immediately.

"Bren," she said, sharper now. "That’s enough."

Darius stepped forward as well.

"You’re crossing a line," he added.

But Bren had already turned back to Marcus.

"I’m not leaving this like that," he said.

Elaina’s jaw tightened slightly, but she didn’t step back.

"You will," she said. "Or I call the guards."

Bren gave a small scoff.

"Go ahead."

That was it.

Marcus stepped forward.

Just one step that closed the distance.

"Knock it off," he said.

Bren’s attention snapped back to him.

Marcus didn’t move any further.

"I don’t have time for this," he continued. "If you want to prove something, do it on a contract. Not here."

The room stayed still.

No one spoke.

Bren held his gaze for a second, then another.

His hands were still raised, ready.

Marcus didn’t mirror it.

He just stood there.

"You really want to do this?" Marcus asked.

"Oh yeah I do. What’s the matter? Are you scared?"

"I am not, but will you be satisfied if I entertain your request for a match?"

"Of course I do. I want to see for myself how you killed a wyvern where it’s so difficult to take on."

"If it’s so difficult for you but easy for me, you should know the difference between our level."

Bren’s jaw tightened at that.

"Then prove it," he said. "Outside. Open ground."

He jerked his head toward the doors.

"Guild rules don’t apply once we step out."

A few of the adventurers picked up on it immediately.

"Outside?"

"Finally."

"That’s better."

The noise started building again.

Marcus didn’t answer right away. He looked at Bren for a second, then past him toward the doors, then back again.

"You’ll get what you want," he said.

Bren gave a short nod.

"Good."

Darius stepped in once more, his voice lower now.

"You’re both pushing it," he said. "If this gets out of hand—"

"It won’t," Bren cut in.

Darius looked at Marcus.

Marcus gave a small nod.

"It won’t." 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Lira let out a quiet breath but didn’t argue further. Joren shifted slightly to the side, clearing the path without saying anything.

The room had already made space.

Bren turned first and started toward the exit, not even checking if Marcus would follow.

Marcus did.

He walked past him, not fast, not slow, just steady. The crowd parted again, this time with more intent. People moved aside to give them a clear path, some already heading for the door ahead of them.

Elaina watched him pass.

"You don’t have to do this," she said quietly.

Marcus didn’t stop.

"It’ll end faster this way," he said.

Then he stepped out.

Bren was already there, standing in the center.

He rolled his shoulders once and set his axe aside, placing it against a post near the wall. No weapons.

He raised his hands again, stance wider now, feet planted.

Marcus walked out a few steps and stopped opposite him.

Around them, people gathered quickly. Adventurers, merchants, even a few guards who chose to watch rather than intervene. A loose circle formed, wider than inside, giving them room.

Darius, Lira, and Joren stood off to the side.

"Don’t drag this out," Darius said.

Bren didn’t respond.

His eyes stayed locked on Marcus.

Marcus adjusted his stance slightly, nothing exaggerated. Feet set. Shoulders relaxed. Hands low.

The noise around them faded again, replaced by a low murmur that died down as more people settled into place.

Bren cracked his neck once.

"Last chance," he said. "Back out."

Marcus looked at him.

"You’re the one who asked. No backsies here."

A small pause.

Then Bren’s expression shifted.

"You’re dead."
