Modern Cultivation : The Strongest Couple Bonded by Vampire System-Chapter 577: City Lord Meeting
A luxurious crystal light hung from the ceiling, and a variety of tasty dishes filled the long table.
Alex, now wearing a suit, followed Aira from behind.
He was disguised as her personal attendant.
Seeing the luxurious party, Alex was a little surprised.
It didn’t look any different from the parties in his old world.
Outside, this place looked like another alien building, but the inside was completely different.
"To think they still hold parties like this," Alex muttered.
"Is that weird?" Aira asked.
"I just thought people would do things differently now that they’re conquered by the Mechalyte."
"As long as we fulfill our quota, the Mechalyte never interfere," Aira replied.
"So, any news from your father? He should be back today, right?" Alex asked.
Aira shook her head.
Deep in her heart, she felt conflicted.
She had seen Alex’s capabilities, so she was afraid of what would happen if her father confronted him.
"Don’t worry, I won’t put your father’s life in danger," Alex said.
"How could you know what I’m worried about?" she asked.
Alex chuckled.
"It’s written all over your face.
And didn’t your mom tell you what my ability is?"
Aira froze as she tried to recall her mother’s stories about Alex, but the memories were blurry.
It had been too long.
"Forget that. Tell me about the city lords here," Alex said.
Aira’s eyes moved toward the center of the hall.
"Look over there... The man in the dark green suit, with the silver cuffs. That is Governor Varik Solen, city lord of city 123."
Alex followed her gaze.
Varik was thin, almost gaunt, with slicked-back gray hair.
He smiled as he talked, but his gaze did not match the smile.
"The usual old fox type," Alex murmured.
"You are not wrong," Aira said.
"His city has the highest quota output in the sector for five years straight.
People say his ’efficiency’ comes from his shady dealing."
"Shady dealing?"
Aira’s lips pressed into a thin line.
"I also don’t know the detail, but I heard it’s a deal with the attendant behind him."
Alex watched Varik laugh with another group of officials.
Behind him stood two attendants.
They were not human.
One was a tall, insectoid creature with four arms and chitin like polished obsidian.
A control collar wrapped around its neckt.
The other looked like a floating mass of translucent flesh, with many small tendrils holding trays and glasses in the air.
’Korveth and Lume species.’
Alex’s gaze lingered on them.
He recognized both from Vesa’s information.
Korveth were a strong species with high breeding speed like insects, but they were not very smart.
The Lume were the opposite.
They were weak, but intelligent.
Alex frowned as an idea formed in his mind.
He suspected Varik was mixing humans with other species, forcing them to breed so they would grow faster.
"Those aliens behind him. How many of them are here?"
"Quite a few." Aira replied.
She pointed discreetly around the hall.
Now that Alex paid attention, he saw them everywhere.
A wolf-headed humanoid in a servant uniform pouring wine.
A short, stone-skinned being carrying plates that would have crushed a normal human.
A thin, blue-skinned woman with faint glowing lines over her arms playing a soft instrument in the corner.
Only minority bring human as their attendant, most were alien species.
Each one wore some form of control device. Collar, band, embedded gem.
Alex’s eyes narrowed. "Slaves."
"Yes, they buy them," Aira replied
He looked at her. "Where do they buy them?"
"Every year, after quota settlement," she explained.
"If a city meets target, the Mechalyte open access to a restricted universe market for a short time.
City lords can trade for medicine, entertainment and slave."
"Universe market," Alex repeated, his mind already turning.
’So this is how they make sure everyone stay loyal. Seem this is also not real universe market.’
It’s market already curated by the mecalyte to ensure no danger come to them.
"That meant today we will have access to the market?"
Aira nodded.
"Yes, as my father still missing, I should be able to act at his stead.
But the credit we get is not much, so if you’re thinking to buy slave, we won’t able to get good one."
’I just need one with good knowledge’ Alex thought
He shifted his gaze again. "Who else matters here?"
Aira pointed toward a woman in a crimson dress, speaking animatedly with a small group of officers.
"That is Lady Helena Marris," she said.
"She prefers ’Lady’ instead of ’Governor’ or ’City Lord’.
Her city is smaller, but she is very good at networking.
I heard she have monthly meeting with other city lord."
Helena had dark hair tied in an elegant twist, a glass of wine in one hand and a soft smile on her lips.
Laughter rose around her as she spoke.
Behind her stood a single attendant, a tall alien with silver skin and a calm, expressionless face, holding her cloak.
"Seem this people also not stand still, how many here you think support avalance."
"SHHH!!! Don’t say that name here. That’s taboo topic."
’Seem my guess is correct, no matter the era, humanity will always ambitious.
There’s no way no one here think to fight back against the mecalyte.’
Some may satisfied being little king on their own city, but other will want more.
Observing Helena, Alex sure she’s one of this type. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"Anyone here as old as your parent?"
She shifted her finger slightly, indicating a broad-shouldered man near the far corner, wearing a plain uniform that was almost too simple for this event.
"That is Lord Darius Keln. Three star Hunter from the pre-Mechalyte era. My mother said he used to be famous."
Darius had scarred hands, short-cropped hair.
His attendants were human wearing old-style uniforms and standing stiff with discipline.
As he was thinking to go to Darius or Helena first, a shadow fell over them.
"Lady Aira," a smooth voice called.
Alex and Aira turned.
