Chapter 206: Fireworks in the Sky

The Violet Thunder Mercenary Group swiftly secured the entrance to the third level of the Black Rock Spire before advancing inside to search for Werewolf Cabaro. What greeted them was a floor strewn with corpses and a werewolf soaked head to toe in blood.

They had been delayed earlier while killing another boss. After their brief clash with the players guarding the entrance, Violet Thunder had judged their opponents to be competent. They assumed Cabaro had already been slain and did not expect much. The truth, however, was the complete opposite. The players had been utterly massacred by the werewolf.

"Kill it!"

Had Cabaro evolved? Hexium, the leader of Violet Thunder, was ecstatic. He immediately issued the order to attack.

After the recent system update, monsters were no longer restricted to evolving only when their health dropped below ten percent. High-level monsters could now evolve at any time, depending on temperament, preference, or even mood, though the probability remained low.

It seemed that today, Hexium’s luck was exceptional.

Facing a scattered and weakened group of players, Werewolf Cabaro had been reveling in the slaughter. The carnage thrilled it, and the sight of its beloved greataxe stained a vivid crimson filled it with a long-forgotten satisfaction. It threw back its head and howled with unrestrained excitement.

Unable to suppress its passion any longer, Cabaro evolved. It transformed from a Level 30 Silver-tier boss into a Level 30 Gold-tier boss. As a result, the remaining players who had attempted to surround and kill it were completely wiped out, their souls becoming yet another part of the Black Rock Spire’s haunted legacy. That devastation, however, created the perfect opportunity for the newly arrived Violet Thunder Mercenary Group.

After a brutal battle in which Violet Thunder committed fifty members and lost more than thirty, they finally brought down the Gold-tier Werewolf Cabaro. When the massive body collapsed, a dark token fell to the ground. It was the very item Hexium had long coveted: a Guild Creation Token.

"A Guild Creation Token!"

At last, it had dropped. Even the usually stoic Hexium could not suppress a sigh, one that carried both relief from recent setbacks and elation at his sudden good fortune. For once, the cold and distant leader felt genuine joy rise within him.

"Congratulations, Master!"

ShadowWhisper, standing beside him, seized the moment to offer flattery. A truly capable subordinate always understood the master’s mood and knew when to please him.

"Well done, everyone," Hexium said, his voice returning to its customary chill. "Any player who died in this battle will receive five hundred thousand gold coins. The rest will receive two hundred thousand. Return to the city."

He crushed a Town Portal Scroll first. His subordinates followed, and in a cascade of light, they all vanished, returning to Dragon’s Peak Citadel to establish the Violet Thunder Guild, the second official guild in Dominion.

What Hexium did not know was that the person he truly should have thanked was Marcus. If not for him, Werewolf Cabaro would never have fallen into Violet Thunder’s hands, and the Guild Creation Token would never have dropped.

Naturally, after Marcus used his own Town Portal Scroll to leave the Black Rock Spire, he was completely unaware of the chaos and major battle that had taken place. He had no idea that his unintentional actions had directly led to the birth of a new guild.

Dominion did not allow players to ride mounts within cities. Upon arrival via Town Portal Scroll, mounts were automatically stored. Marcus threw himself onto the sofa in his mansion, ready to open his inventory and sort through his gains, when a system announcement suddenly echoed throughout Dragon’s Peak Citadel.

Ding!

"Attention, all players in Dragon’s Peak Citadel. A monster is invading the city. Please remain cautious. The city’s Crystal Cannons have been activated."

"A monster? Where?"

The announcement left players baffled. Crystal Cannons were only activated when a monster approached dangerously close to the city. Even when the Dark Arch-Sorcerer, the Double-Headed Raven King, had attacked before, the cannons had not fired, as he never entered their range.

"A monster invasion? Don’t tell me that Raven King is chasing me again," Marcus muttered to himself. He immediately rushed out of his mansion and joined the increasingly panicked crowd, searching for the invading monster. After the last disaster, the Raven King would have to be completely brain-dead to come after him again.

"Where’s the invading monster?"

"Is the system bugged?"

Players scanned their surroundings but found nothing. Confusion spread through the city. Then, without warning, a deafening BOOM thundered from the city walls as a Crystal Cannon fired a beam of energy into the sky.

"So there really is a monster?"

Startled, players tilted their heads upward. A white energy projectile streaked through the blue sky, racing toward... nothing. The sight only deepened their confusion.

BOOM!

There was a monster.

When the projectile reached roughly fifty yards above the city, it collided with something solid. Space rippled violently as a massive, three-eyed black serpent shrouded in dark mist was forced into view.

The vertical eye on the serpent’s forehead continuously spewed black fog, trying to shield its body and resist the cannon’s power. It was futile. The white energy slammed into the serpent, shattering its demonic aura. Explosions erupted in rapid succession, and the blast illuminated the heavens in a dazzling flash, beautiful like fireworks blooming high above the city.

"Wow! Such pretty fireworks!"

Some of the female players cheered, mistaking the explosion for a spectacular pyrotechnic display.

"There’s more!" someone shouted.

The Crystal Cannon fired again.

Another white projectile tore through the sky and struck a second target: a white, curly-furred fox. Far weaker than the serpent, it was obliterated instantly, though it still produced a brilliant, if smaller, explosion.

For a brief moment, two fireworks, one large and one small, adorned the sky, their overlapping light thrilling everyone below.

"If a guy set off fireworks for me above Dragon’s Peak Citadel, it would be so romantic," a girl murmured dreamily, lost in her fantasies of a grand romance. 𝐟𝐫𝕖𝗲𝘄𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝕧𝐞𝚕.𝕔𝕠𝐦

Marcus happened to overhear her, and her words sparked a sudden idea.

The players continued to stare eagerly at the sky, hoping for yet another dazzling explosion. But the sky remained calm. As for Marcus, his mind raced, as a thousand thoughts colliding at once.
